Queering Sports

The idea that coming out is see as a big deal for men and almost ignored for women is an issue Bordon and Gibbs both discuss in their articles. Bordon discusses a few examples of women who have come out and showcases how it is normal for women who play sports to be perceived as lesbians. Creating this general example that is what forces stereotypes to be enforced and cause men in sports to hesitate coming out. Michael Sam stated,” I think if I never would have came out, never would have said those words out to the public, I would still be currently in the NFL” (Gibbs, 2015)  As this quote clarifies that  coming out can lead to the end of one’s career. Whereas Brittany Griner had been viewed as just another female athlete that came out. “We talk a lot in the L.G.B.T. community about how sexism is a big part of what contributes to homophobia.” (Borden, 2013) Michael Sam and Brittany Griner experienced different out comes when discussing their sexuality; one received a shrug and the other lost many opportunities which made it clear that sex contributed to how they were viewed. I looked at two athletes that had recently come out and analyzed the difference in how the media covered them.
Gus Kenworthy and the media’s coverage around him was focused on this one area of his life. He started to show up on magazine covers as well as interviewed over his experience of coming out. Yet, there was almost no correlation to the sport he plays within these interviews (he is a (skier). He was raised as an influential person in the LGBT community and became a representation of it because he came out. Yet they only cover stories revolve around him coming out and/or his partner. This made me think about the idea that when a man comes out the media tends to make it more than what it needs to be, compared to woman who coming out is seen as normal.
Then when looking at Linda Villumsen who also came out in 2015, has close to no real news about her relationship with her partner. Most of the small articles focused on her cycling accomplishments, although a few mentions appear it is not given a real role as a part of her life. Her coming out had no real impact on how the media covered her. Even for her partner, Emma Trott, who is also a well-known cyclist herself which I felt would have the media swarming to get the story on how competitive they are, or if it draws conflict. Yet it wasn't given much attention.
The comparison in media between the two athletes was incredibly different after they came out, the type of stories used to cover them are completely unalike. For some reason men are turned into a stereotype and are pushed to fill a role that they never signed up for. Whereas for woman have to deal with being viewed as just another out female athlete. It is because of these reasons that men fear coming out, and women aren’t given enough credit for being out. For some reason we see male athlete will stick out for something they can’t control. Female athletes are all viewed as being in the closet because they play sports. Neither the men nor the woman are able to avoid being judged. There is clearly some work needed to improve the way that the media covers stories and the form of attention given to an athlete.

“To show what that’s like for them, to show how hard it is and how gentle and great they are to each other in the process. That fire-escape scene just felt like exactly the right thing. Relationships are so gloriously messy and at this point in theirs,
Alec knows exactly where his comfort lies.”
