have you ever watched billy joel’s masterclasses and was throughly amused at how sometimes his attention span is that of a fruit fly

i think the minute i hit 24 i started to understand the old man’s “the music talks!” hallucinations because i listen to his songs now and the music does talk so that’s a bit odd

sorry to send ANOTHER ask but did you reblog my Surprises audio post and then delete it? it was a really good comment and I wanted to respond 😭
a bad habit of mine is to post and delete because i have a bit of trouble when it comes to talking about real people with real lives because i dont want to infringe i guess anyways here it is:
I don't know if i read or heard this and stole it and don't remember but the song's meaning has completely changed for me recently even before the documentary since i always thought it was about elizabeth and their relationship but no it's about him and that is haunting especially since the music itself without the lyrics is actually terrifying
the lyrics especially "Don't look now but you have changed your best friends wouldn't tell you" is so similar to what sean said about billy once the stranger came out that he was starting to change and that they were losing him
also
"What has it cost you, what have you won?
The sins of the fathers are the sins of the sons It was always within you, it will always continue"
is insanely sad cause it implies generational trauma but also many different things like it might be the sense of abandonment he felt because of his father and that people leaving him will always continue since it was always within him or his own fear of becoming a father who is not there for his children that he was going to be his father that was never around in his life and never looked for him and that this possibility is within him like an inherited thing or about his alcoholism and how it shouldn't surprise anyone and what's truly tragic about all of this is in the end even though he didn't want that to happen he had to leave his daughter for long periods of time to tour and make a living
i sound parasocial but surprises makes me ill

Wait sorry to send another ask but I just noticed your title and I have been deeply unwell about Silver Seas since the moment I discovered it. I was flabbergasted by the lyric "born in May, died in September" because it's extremely relevant to an experience from my own life. I was so overwhelmed by that it took me like multiple years of knowing about it to go "wait a minute, Billy Joel was born in May, what the fuck is that verse about" 😅
no no it’s okay but also im sorry but that is really funny and sounds like something the old man himself would experience and realise only years later but yeah that song i cant listen to it it makes me way too sad i love it and i hoped it would be in the companion album but alas it’s for the best considering how much it messes me up

I think we share a history of watching Billy Joel masterclasses as teenagers. It was really formative for me... I remember watching them in my room in 2012, hoping one day I could go to one because it seemed more likely that he would continue doing those than performing at that point. I really fell in love with his personality watching those. You can see how much he likes connecting with the fans like that, too.
and he’s super funny too but also fair cause if he doesn’t want to answer a specific question he wont move on until he gives the fan another answer even if it’s not that relevant they’re so much fun and really showcase how intelligent he is too

my journey’s end is so special to me because when i was around the same age the old man was when he wrote the song (14 -15) i used to listen to him making fun of the song in his masterclasses but replay the part where he was singing it over and over again because i genuinely liked it yet didnt have any knowledge that it existed in full since i listened to music on youtube before spotify and was too enchanted by that version and that song really stuck with me im 24 and many times even though i haven’t watched the masterclass in ages i remember it and start singing it throughout all these years so listening now to my journeys end on spotify has touched me on a level that i cant really express

i have no clue how im going to listen to a 7 hours companion album like when they said album i thought it was going to be a couple of hours at most not an actual treasure trove that gets dumped on your head and knocks you unconscious as you get buried underneath

cant watch part 2 cause hbo sucks so here’s the best songs on every billy album (no more than three) and it was signed off by billy himself (it’s true) as the greatest fan list of all time which may or may not be a good thing:
1- Cold Spring Harbor: the tomorrow is today/nocturne (both versions)/and got to begin again trilogy
2- Piano Man: ain’t no crime/stop in nevada/somewhere along the line
3- Streetlife Serenade: streetlife serenader/the great suburban showdown/last of the big time spenders
4- Turnstiles: say goodbye to hollywood/james/ive loved these days
5- The Stranger: everybody has a dream
6- 52nd Street: stiletto/52nd street
7- Glass Houses: all for leyna/sleeping with the television on
8: The Nylon Curtain: pressure/surprises
9: An Innocent Man: EASY MONEY/keeping the faith/an innocent man/this night
10: The Bridge: getting closer/code of silence/baby grand
11: Storm Front: storm front/state of grace
12: River of Dreams: A MINOR VARIATION/the great wall of china/famous last words
The Collected Additional Masters: you picked a real bad time/LIGHT AS THE BREEZE/house of blue light/nobody knows but me (it’s fun)
All my Lives: only a man demo/these rhinestones days demo (that’s how much i love ive loved these days)/MONEY OR LOVE demo
honorable mentions: the rest of his songs
ok thanks.
