Hoodie
I am only producing one hoodie for this project, that I have decided to embroider onto. Because the main colours of my brand are black and white, I decided to go for a black hoodie and embroider the design with white thread. The illustration on the hoodie was about 4 inches in width and height, estimating the embroidering time for 20 minutes.

Business cards
My business cards were professionally printed by instantprint , which offered an array of different types of business cards such as recycled and economical. Using the template the website offered, I created my business card as designed in my sketchbook, preparing it for printing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once my designs are ready to go through the website, I filled in the details for a “350gsm Economy Business card”. I ordered a bulk of 100 with double sides and standard corners for j£13 minus shipping.
Tumblr media
I am now going to add the finished designs onto the card order, using PDF files instead of illustrator files.
Tumblr media
The next step is seeing how my business cards will be printed out. Anything out of the red line shows whats unsafe, and could possibly bleed or be cut off. I decided to go with the original cut, as it best fits my design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After checking the proofs for my designs, I am now ready to make the purchase. All the information is laid out so I am able to double check my business card designs and make sure everything is suffice for printing. I also added a business card holder to my order, bringing the price up to £19.99

The cards arrived a few days later, looking exactly as they were meant to with no cut offs or bleeding in the design.

Laser cutting
With this project, I will be laser cutting 4 separate things:
Packaging box
3D POS apple
Origami flower for box
Apple clothing tags
All will be cut into A4 or A3 black card, around 250gsm. This post will be looking into the process of laser cutting and showing the process of how its made
After I have finished the net/ design I’d like to be laser cut, i need to export the .ai file into a .dxf file so the laser cutter will be able to read the information on the file. Once the file is opened into the program used for laser cutting, you are able to change the speed and power of the laser cutter. This is helpful because the areas that need to be folded and not cut off are scorched so folding is easier and clean.

Below is a video demonstrating how the laser cutter works using the 3D apple design as an example.

Shepard Fairey
Shepard Fairey is a contemporary street artist and graphic designer. He is a known activist and is the founder of a very high end streetwear brand called OBEY clothing.
He jumpstarted his career with his “Andre the Giant Has a Posse" or also known as his OBEY sticker while he was still studying. A few stickers turned into a few thousand and continued. He then moved to posters, graffiti and even billboards of this design, and became wildly known throughout the area.
He increased his popularity in the 2008 elections as he designed a poster for the Obama campaign. The poster is red, blue and white with the word ”Hope” underneath.
Tumblr media
He is known as one of the best known and most influential street artists to date. He incorporates his manifesto into his work as much as possible, using his prints and illustrations to campaign against or for what he believes in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve picked a few designs Shepard has done, some prints and some multimedia pieces. A very noticeable element in his art is the colour. He mostly sticks to warm colours like red and yellow with the odd occasional cold colour, like a blue.
His artwork is very minimalist usually, great for street art and grafitti. When he adds detail, he focuses on a certain area. An example I have shown of this is the second print, with the detailed pattern in the woman’s scarf/ cloth. It contrasts with the solid colours with the little to no shading on her face.

European.son.420
One artist that has caught my eye is Patrick Bates, who goes by his user European.son.420. He is a stick and poke tattoo artist based in Brighton. What attracted me to his style was how simplistic it was. His tattoos consist of linework, typography and sometimes paired with an odd combination of bold colours which pop out.
Below are some spreadsheets showcasing his designs:

Although my project will not be focused on this kind of style, I decided to research about him because I like certain aspects of his design that I would like to include in my own. Due to my designs mostly going to be black and white, a lot of his work fits that criteria. I also wanted to expand my knowledge on tattoos and look at the other options I have for my clothing

Vinyl
I have used vinyl for nearly all my shirts and lanyards using the brand name and some designs that are simple enough to use one or two colours of vinyl. Using a heat press, Vinyl can appear to look visually cleaner than a screen printed design as the Vinyl designs are cut out with a small blade on a Vinyl cutting machine. I decided to use this method of printing for a lot of my shirts, using the brand name.
This is the Vinyl which I have ordered which included sheets black and white.
Tumblr media
With the help of a vinyl cutter, I would stick the vinyl onto my chosen piece of fabric and cover it with grease proof paper. The heat presser had to be around 165 degrees Celsius in order for the vinyl to successfully transfer onto the chosen fabric.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the heat press down for 10-12 seconds, the vinyl should be transferred onto the material of choice. Leave the vinyl and fabric to cool down before removing the clear sheet. I carefully did this in case the vinyl unsuccessfully transferred onto the fabric and needs more time under the heat.
This can be also done with an iron however the results are nowhere as near better as what a heat press can produce. The reason why the heat press is better is because the heat is spread out evenly across the heated metal plate and the design is also being pressed onto the fabric with a lot of even weight. Below is a few finished products of vinyl:

Screen print shirts
As I had spare shirts for this project, I thought it would be a good idea to screen print two of my bandana shirts as well as the snake flower pot as screen printing has given me very clean outcomes with my bandanas.

Black and white vinyl is used on each of these screen print shirts on the front featuring the brand name.

Transfer t-shirts
Transfer paper is excellent for when your designs are too complex to just screen print or use vinyl. There is a slight quality loss if not done well, but if all the steps are followed as such, transfer paper can leave a very professional finish.
Tumblr media
I have two pocket T-shirt’s with multiple coloured designs, so transfer paper would be ideal to prosecute. One will need light transfer paper and one will need dark transfer paper. You are able to tell the difference and some light transfer paper brands feature a red grid on the unusable side while dark transfer paper has a blue grid.
Tumblr media
Transfer paper is similar to vinyl, as you heat press the design onto the chosen shirt. With dark transfer paper, I had to peel the design off the paper and stick it on the shirt in the position I liked it in. The lighter transfer paper is slightly easier in printing, as I only had to lay down the design where I wanted it. This means that for typeface, the light transfer paper designs have to be mirrored.
Grease proof paper must be covering the design at all times while heat pressing.
