“You’ve been out late,” Barty drawled as Evan quietly walked into the flat at two in the morning.

Angry eyes narrowed at him. “So?” Evan asked, throwing his jacket on a chair.

“Were you out with someone?” he demanded, though his stomach churned at the thought that the answer might be ‘yes.’

Evan glared at him. “What’s it to you?” he asked, folding his arms. “You went out tonight too, or don’t you remember?”

Barty frowned at that. Yes, he had gone out to the club with Paul. But that didn’t mean anything. “It’s not the same,” he mumbled, setting his jaw.

The other man gave a humorless laugh. “What do you expect, Bee? That I wait around at home for you? That I never make any plans unless they involve you?”

Irrational fury and sickening jealousy starting to bubble within him at Evan’s tone, Barty huffed. “Yeah, that’d be nice!” he replied, scowling.

Again, Evan chuckled. “Why? Why do you get to go out and get laid in bathrooms but I don’t?”

“Because!” Barty yelled, clenching his hands into fists. “Because you’re-” he cut himself off, afraid he might say something he’d regret.

“I’m what, Bee?” the taller man asked, head tilted. 

Suspense hung in the air as Barty contemplated his options. Vulnerability seemed like the worst possible idea, but then he remembered the feeling of sitting around, picturing Evan in some club bathroom on his knees.

“Mine,” he said flatly, looking away. His heart felt like it was about to escape out of his chest. “You’re mine.”

“Hm.”

He couldn’t help but look up at the noncommittal hum. What did that mean?

“Act like it, then,” Evan replied, a challenging, somewhat angry look in his eyes.

Barty wasn’t sure what to say to that.

"I love you," James says at age sixteen, truth and nervousness dripping from every word. "No you don't," Regulus mumbles, disbelieving and full of self-hatred.

"I love you," James says at age seventeen, confidence and adoration clear in his tone. "No you don't," Regulus replies, a small smile dancing across his features before he says the words back.

"I love you," James says at age eighteen, desperation causing his voice to fray. "No...you don't," Regulus murmurs, hands shaking, pulling his sleeve back to reveal the skull and snake seared into his arm.

Remus watched nervously as Sirius made his way through a pile of birthday presents, completely regretting his decision to give something handmade. It wasn't like he had much of a choice, but now that Sirius had already opened flashy presents from the others, he felt like his own gift was completely unworthy.

"Oh...wow!" Sirius breathed, pausing as he opened the small, lumpy package. Inside, he found some knobbly-looking mittens, with a note: So you don't get frostbite. Again. "Thanks, Moons!" he exclaimed, jamming the mittens on his hands.

"No problem," Remus murmured, turning a bit pink.

"How long did those take you, eh?" James muttered to him with a knowing smile as Sirius moved on to his next gift.

The truth was that Remus had been working on them for months, painstakingly making them without magic. But he didn't want to admit that. "A few day," he shrugged sullenly.

Sirius didn't hear, though.

Nor did Remus notice the way Sirius obsessively carried his new mittens everywhere he went.
