“Thought you were too much of a scaredy cat for this one,” Buck whispers, angling his head towards Eddie’s ear. Eddie just barely represses the shiver down his spine at the words, fully prepared to blame the motion on Freddy Fazbear’s stupid ass har-har. Part of him thinks he should feel ridiculous for the sudden intensity of his reactions to Buck, but he can’t find it in himself to care. When Eddie turns to roll his eyes at Buck, he has a lazy smirk on his face.

“I’ve been to war, yknow,” Eddie says.

“Yeah, and the one time you played, you said this was worse,” Chris butts in, eyes still glued to the screen. Buck snorts, his smirk only growing.

“You think Five Nights at Freddy’s is worse than war?” Buck asks.

This is a more Buck/Eddie-centric fic to run parallel to my other ongoing fic which focuses on Maddie and Buck as they come to terms with their respective trauma and abuse. LA took him in and carved out a place for him to stay. A place to call home, where he doesn’t have to constantly chisel away pieces of himself as much as he used to and shape his broken heart after what people want of him. There’s peace in existing just the way he is in the 118 - a peace after Abby left him standing on that airport months ago, leaving him adrift in her old apartment with memories that haunt him harshly than any ghost ever could.

But - Buck isn’t going to throw any more of a bitch fit than he, admittedly, already has. Because Buck is almost a century old and he can be mature, thank you very much.

So, he takes it in stride and doesn’t complain when Bobby keeps pairing him up with Eddie. He’s silent, and mostly tries to be a team player. He gets what Eddie needs and Eddie smiles at him, but he doesn’t smile back because they’re not buddies. They’re civil, Buck decides, but not friends.

Buck will do anything in his power to keep the 118 in his life and Eddie Diaz, while a part of it, will be nothing more than a moment in his very long and lonely life.
