“ Huh? ”

Sakura was about to move her gaze upwards to meet Ao’s when the sound of a soft thud lands on her desk, her full attention re-directed instead.

“ What happened to him?! ”

Green eyes instantly filled with worry, her fingers softly touching the chest area of the bird, checking for any signs of life.

Only there wasn’t any.

“ Let’s take him where you found him, Ao-kun. Maybe we can bury him beneath the tree you found him. ”

“Stop messing around before I expel you both,” came the stern voice from Aizawa-sensei. “Villains won’t be waiting for the weather to become comfortable for him, so he’ll be doing this properly or he can quit the hero course.”

“It’s okay,” Ao tells her and climbs off her back again. Readying himself at the starting block. If he just walked slowly it would hopefully be fine.

Ao could recognise that smell anywhere, the nice nurse that helped him after he fell ill during the entrance exam. So now he was slowly chasing the smell through the hallways, opening any door as needed till he came to a classroom, not noticing that it was his own classroom too. He could see her sitting with her eyes on the phone as she was waiting for the class to start. 

He silently jumped up on her desk. “Hi, Haruno-san right? Nice to see you again, I didn’t know you were a student too, what class are you in?”

“No idea,” Ao replied. He kind of wanted to say it was because dogs tended to be angry, but he was going to be a better person than that.

They were quickly interrupted by Aizawa-sensei giving his explanation for what they were going to do.

“Let us start with the 50-meter dash. Ao and Sakura, get ready you’re going to go first,” he says.

“Ummm, do you think you can carry me?” Ao whispers to Sakura.

As the last students had arrived and their teacher had expressed his dislike for them making friends, he told them to get dressed in their gym gear and meet outside at the athletics field.

In order to not be late, Ao convinced the tall boy with glasses, he didn’t quite catch the name. Soumei-san right… to let him ride his back to where they were supposed to meet.

“You can put me down here,” Ao said as they approached Sakura. “Thanks for your help.”

“I think our teacher is evil, it’s not as bad as during our exam, but it’s too hot outside to do anything athletic,” he whispered to Sakura.

“Thirteen-sensei is nice, she’s always so happy about the work I do in her class, but I do wish her classes were a bit more challenging. Finding people is not hard with my nose, and my quirk easily clears away any rubble. She really thinks I would do the best as a rescue hero, but I kind of want to fight villains and get a bit of a challenge… I’m not selfish am I…?” Ao paused for a moment.

“What path do you think I should pick and what kind of hero do you want to be?” He asked Tsu.

“Excuse me.” Tsuyu called out. “Kerro, you left your notebook in the class and thought I’d bring it to you.” She explained as she held out the notebook for him.

Ao crouched down and jumped over Sakura and grabbed onto the desk behind her only for it to tip over and hit his chest.

“I’m fine,” he told her. And with a few simple hand movements, the desk floated away from him, rotated the right side up again landed gently on the floor without him touching it.

“Don’t tell anyone,” Ao said on got on his seat, though with the number of students in the classroom, the cat was already out of the bag.

“Your quirk… is it something villainous? Like summoning angry dogs that chase after your enemies? If it’s something like that, could you at least prepare me for it?” Ao asked. 

“I’ve had a few bad experiences with them. Not that I’m afraid of them of course,” he said and turned to look in another direction.

“It’s okay, I ramble at times too. Has he called you anything yet? I hear he’s going around giving everyone rude nicknames,” Ao said.

He wasn’t sure exactly what to think about Bakugo, he didn’t see why anyone could think he is nice, but he didn’t want to argue about it with her either.

Tsuyu looked up at the new boy. She was so engrossed in looking out the window she didn’t pay attention. She had her bento box off to the side when she noticed someone was there. 

“Kerro. Sure. You can sit with me.” She answered. “Nice to meet you Ao, my name is Tsuyu but my friends call me Tsu.”

“Tsu… Tsu..” Ao let the name roll in his tongue. “I like it, I can call you that right? I’ve not made any friends yet. I had hoped there was more like me here. All I’ve noticed is you, me, Tokoyami-san in out class and Tsunotori-san in the other hero class. We should stick together in case people picks on us for how we look and act.”

“I hope so... but not everyone is nice. Bakugo called me a cat, I would have scratched his face if Aizawa-sensei hadn’t stopped me, my tail gave my intentions away,” Ao said with his tail flicking behind him from the memory.

“I’m sorry, I’ve just been burnt a few times, people starting out appearing nice, but turn on me later...”

“I’m looking forward to class too, especially our hero classes. In my old school, I always got in trouble for fighting, but now we’ll get to fight each other without getting in trouble and even get to use our quirks in the process. Hmmm… do you have any other quirks than healing?”

“Oh, I will,” Ao smiled at her. “Perhaps all three of us can study together? I like science class much better and is much more useful than English. We get to run fun experiment instead of reading boring texts with boring letters. What about you, what classes do you like?”

He shouldn’t be this nervous, she seemed friendly, but he also didn’t want to screw this up. He looked back at this tail to make sure it stayed calm, he liked his tail, but it had a tendency to make his body language a bit too easy to read.

He couldn’t hesitate anymore, he had to wake up his inner tiger and be more confident. He put his tray down and leaned over the table. 

“Hi, can I sit with you? Our other classmates are being quite noisy and I need to get more used to it. I’m Ao,” he greeted her with a big smile flashing his fangs in the process. He was unsure if she remembered his name from class or not, but it was a nice way to have her repeat her name without embarrassing himself.

“Animals have fur, I’m not an animal,” Ao muttered after Yaoyorozu-san went back to her seat.

“That pile over there is our teacher,” Ao said and turned his head to the yellow sleeping bag in front of the classroom. “He is probably a pro-hero, he smells of coffee and yet he’s napping on the first day of school. The only way he’d get away with something like that was if he was doing some important work at night. We better not do anything to agitate him today, you won’t tell him that I almost attacked you right, I don’t want to get in trouble on my first day, I can get a bit … at times…”

“Fur? I’m not a cat,” Ao growled, tail flicking behind him ears getting low. “And are you blaming me for not being able to smell raisins in buns?”

Ao moved closer towards Sakura.

Without anyone of them noticing, Momo came to defuse the situation. “Hi Ao-san, I’m sorry about what happened at the party, our chef and our family give you our deepest apologies.”

He turned and saw her bowing down, and in an instant, his tail calmed down a bit and his ears got into a less aggressive position. 

“You could have killed me,” Ao mumbled, not yet ready to accept her apology yet.

“I’ve something for you,” she said and handed him a cupcake shaped pie. “I hope you’ll like it. I watched the chef make it and we both checked everything that went into it to ensure it is safe.”

Ao took it and sniffed it. “It smells good, chicken filling right?” He asked to show Sakura that she shouldn’t underestimate his sense of smell.

Feeling confident, he look a bite in it and it was delicious. “I forgive you,” he smiled at her before taking another bite.

“I’m glad,” she said and smiled back at him. “Haruno-san, I’m sorry that you couldn’t come to my party, but if you want to hang out one day, just tell me.”

“I’ve mostly been sleeping in front of the air condition during the days and waiting till night to go out. But we had a power outage one day when I was sleeping, my mother was luckily coming home early that day and rushed me into the bathtub and called an ambulance, it was horrible, but now she’s working from home when it is hot outside so she can make sure I’m okay,” Ao said with a smile.

“I had a bun, I usually don’t eat stuff like that as often they’re not safe, but it smelled good and Yaoyorozu-san insisted that I should try and it didn’t contain anything I can’t eat, but someone had mixed up one of the raisin buns with the normal ones and I was the unlucky one.

“Too? Oh, this is class 1A? We’re classmates then,” he smiled. 

“But you know it is rude to stare at people’s ears right? But since you saved me, you can pat me once,” he said and held out a finger for emphasis. 

“And no touching the ears, we’re not that close,” he said and lowered his head.

“I came from outside, I recognised your smell as I entered the school-grounds from when you helped me during the exam after I suffered heatstroke, so I went to find you before my own class. I’m Ao, are you sure you don’t recognise me, I would have thought I had quite a distinct look,” he greeted her and wiggled his ears and swinged the tail behind him.

 “I should probably find my class, I’m in 1A, you know where it is? I hope my class is nice, I was supposed to go to a party with them after we all got our acceptance letters, but had to be rushed to the hospital before it even started as the food that got served by the entrance poisoned me. A bit of a shame really. Yaoyorozu-san seemed nice and had a large and her house looked great. I hope I can still get to know someone...”

“But we’ll see each other during lunch right, I hope the food here is good…, but if fall ill you’ll just save me again, right?” He asked and smiled at her flashing his catlike fangs at her in the process.
