The last days of the petition against conversion therapy are FASCINATING to watch. I have been following it pretty closely for almost a year now, and the progress was, above all, steady. There was this jump when some algorithm in Finland picked it up, but even that was local.

And now, everyone is panicking.

Which really shows.

These past three or four days, multiple countries have reached the threshold. Even more notably, the number of signatures in total, the ones that we need to get one million of, are growing rapidly. There are only 400'000 signatures missing. Two days ago, it was closer to 600'000.

Hey, so, I don't know how many of you follow Canadian news, but yesterday, someone drove a car into the crowd at a Filipino cultural festival in Vancouver. I'm sorry that I can't put that more sensitively, but I really don't know how else to describe it. I'm not Filipino, but it happened in the neighborhood I grew up in. I'm not sure how to describe how I feel. I'd walked past the event an hour before with some friends. We'd joked about how the first nice weekend in Vancouver is a special occasion because everyone comes out. There's a vigil on that corner tonight.

The point of this isn't to talk about how I feel. A friend has shared some gofundmes with me and I wanted to post them here. And ask that maybe if you're local and you're able to, could you donate blood? I don't know. I don't have anything I can say. It's not my tragedy but I feel it anyway. I don't say this to excuse them. There isn't an excuse. It's abhorrent.

I say this to emphasize the importance of teaching about consent in more ways than one.

Teaching about consent is more than "no means no".

It's teaching that silence isn't yes. It's teaching that pushing someone to say 'yes' isn't consent. It's teaching that a freely-given 'yes' is the only acceptable response (this means it's not threatened, manipulated, or otherwise pressured out of you). It's teaching that someone should be capable of consent. This means that they aren't under the influence. It also means that children can never consent to sexual acts.

But it's more than that even.

It's making sure you don't force children to hug or kiss relatives when they say 'no'. It's allowing children to have bodily autonomy. It's not making children feel bad if they don't want to give someone affection. Forcing physical contact, even 'innocent' contact, teaches children that their body doesn't belong to them and this can make them more vulnerable to sexual predators. It can also teach them that it's okay to ignore other people's no's, or otherwise make people feel bad or pressured when they say 'no.' By allowing children to set their own boundaries around what kinds of non-sexual physical touch they are comfortable with, when they want to receive that touch, and from whom, it helps them learn to recognize and enforce their own boundaries. This is helpful in the present, but also in the future when they navigate consent for both receiving and providing.
