Okay I know we talk a lot about the significance of Jinshi giving his hairpin to Maomao and how it is a romantic gesture and how the garden party's kind of a turning point in their relationship, but can we also talk about how Lady Lihua walked up to Maomao, saw she was already holding two seperate hairpins, said "No, you should have more" and then took one of the nicest pins she had out of her hair and handed it to Maomao in front of her entire entourage and all of Lady Gyokuyou's other ladies in waiting? Walks up to her, basically goes "I dont care if it could get you in trouble with your boss, you're too pretty to only have 2 of these" and then also gives her a token of affection with like, 20 witnesses.

Are, are we seriously not going to unpack any of that?

I love how this scene parallels and contrast Maomao's being furious for the first time when she slapped Lady Lihua's maid ?

It is an introduction to a new side of both of them in the exact same way. The big similarity is that both them are righteously angry at a maid doing something to someone else that is bad for theirs well-beingn physical or mental whether due to ignorance and/or denial (Maomao with Lihua's maid) or just straight up maliciousness (Jinshi with Lishu's maid).

The big difference is that Maomao just straight up go for the slap and is so much more physical than him, she drags her by her hair aand is physically intimadating while also being a teeny tiny 17/18 years old, while Jinshi who is physically tall and intimidating just his height isn't physically agressive in his anger at all and doesn't really drops the mask at all. It's an anger that is bit more...cold I guess ? He doesn't even raise his voice.

And the reason for that difference is the way they are raised and the amount of power they have but both of them are very effective in theirs own way. And they are definitely complementary with each other too.

One scene that i really adored throughout the series

Lady Lihua simply could have lended Maomao a low-tier maid uniform but was like “nah, I want to see what she’d look like as MY Lady-in-waiting”

I wonder what Lady Gyukoyou’s reaction was when Maomao walked into the Jade Pavilion wearing a Crystal uniform.

Also, I think this is the first time Maomao was around Lady Lihua without her freckles.
