Third-Party Apps Leaking Information, Claim Banks

SBI, ICICI Bank, and other large banks have raised considerations over nonbanks getting ingress to their customer information through the development of third party applications developed for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform.

But ICICI Bank has blocked PhonePe UPI application users as they claimed this app discriminates against users of UPI Apps other banks. So they blocked customers from accessing their accounts using this Flipkart owned UPI app.

PhonePe is a third party app of famous e-commerce Flipkart and this app is able to be the segment of Unified Payment Interface through collaboration with Yes Bank. Recently Flipkart integrated UPI payments on their website and they also offering cashback to customers on their e-wallet on PhonePe UPI payment. Users have found that they cannot add their ICICI Bank account on the PhonePe UPI app. If you want to be part of UPI platform then one of the requirements is that banks should facilitate reconcilability; Bank should allow customers to be part of the UPI medium through any other bank’s app. The CEO of PhonePe Sameer Nigam pointed the issue first on Saturday on Twitter. He told to an esteemed daily Times of India “over the phone that the bank has made no communication to them as to this was being done”. In Nigam’s exact words "We have received no communication from them nor Yes Bank. We are clueless as to why this has been done".

When the Times of India query about this matter and contacted with ICICI bank, they said in response "Some banks, including us have raised security related concerns at appropriate forums about the access to UPI data to a non-banking application. Further, this entity is following restrictive practices allowing users to make payments with only its UPI handle, which is in contravention to the UPI guidelines of interoperability and choice that empowers a customer to choose any app to make payments through UPI,". Bank also confirmed that the pending resolution about this matter, it has shortly declined to undertake UPI transaction from this entity.

In the meantime deputy managing director of SBI bank, Manju Agarwal said that bank is fortified that customer data details are not available to third parties. She added "As per UPI, only bank applications can be used by customers. We will have to take up with the RBI and NPCI to get non-banks blocked,”.

Other wallet companies like Paytm and Mobikwik have been vestibuling for accessing to the UPI interface for wallets. PhonePe should say thanks to YesBank for the partnership.
