Is my dog stressed or happy? What is my Dog Behavior + Body Language telling me?
"Dogs do speak. You just have to learn how to listen.” - Anonymous
It can be challenging to try and understand your dog’s behavior and why they do the things they do. Paying attention to slight changes in body language and behavioral cues can give us a lot of insight into what they may be feeling!
Panting
Dogs can pant for many reasons. The obvious reasons are it being warm outside or your pup has been playing hard or exercising. Panting can also mean your dog is in pain or has just experienced a traumatic event. Something as simple as moving to a new apartment or losing their favorite toy can be a traumatic experience for a dog!
“Thankfully, dogs live in the moment, so repetition and consistency can move them out of that negative event and association. Often, we pet parents have a tendency to shield our pups from things that give them anxiety, this could in fact make the problem worse. If you believe it is behavior and psychological, contact us, or find a local canine behavior specialist.” (Desh Rain)
If you think your dog could be in distress, you may see other signs such as restlessness, shaking, change in breathing rate, or signs of other illnesses. Be sure to determine the source of pain as soon as possible to start the healing process. Always check with your veterinarian or canine behavioral specialist for a detailed course of action.
A dog who is under stress or has anxiety may also pant excessively. A dog visiting the vet’s office, for example! Be sure to watch for body language signals and if it’s possible, remove the dog from the situation that is causing discomfort. If you cannot determine the panting is stress related, then we recommend taking your pet to the vet. It is important for your dog to be seen by a professional and know that if your dog has discomfort visiting the vet, try searching for a veterinarian local to you that does home visits!
If you anticipate your dog will be in a stressful situation and would like to be proactive, contact Applehead City Pet for tips and solutions to help you and your dog through it.
 Tail Wagging
Tail wagging is often misunderstood as a dog being happy and friendly. In reality, tail wagging could mean a dog is feeling a wide range of emotion from excitement to fear. To determine which emotion your dog may be feeling, pay attention to the way they hold their tail and the directions it’s wagging. Relaxed and happy dogs usually hold their tails at a neutral level and wag them from side to side. A dog feeling assertive or aggressive will usually hold their tail upright and have shorter, more twitch-like wags. A tail wagging down low between a dog's legs could mean he or she is scared or stressed.
Yawning
Most people associate yawning with tiredness but yawning can actually be a big indicator as to what emotion your dog is feeling. A dog who yawns excessively is usually under some sort of stress or feeling anxious. A pup who dislikes car rides or experiences motion sickness may yawn frequently. The yawn is a way for the dog to try and calm him or herself down.
It can also mean a dog is feeling submissive and wants to show a sign of indifference to its encounter or situation. You may see this situation with a dog who is entering an area such as a dog park and wants to tell the other dogs that it’s not a threat. Yes, dogs do have behaviors to communicate with other dogs!
The best way to determine how your dog is feeling is to pay detailed attention to how he or she acts and looks during a neutral state. From there, it will be easier to notice any slight changes in behavior and body language. If you'd like to talk through your dog's behavior to determine what is right for you - we invite you to contact us for more information and a free consultation

Does My Senior Dog Have Alzheimer’s?
"There is no faith which has never yet been broken, except that of a truly faithful dog." -Konrad Lorenz
“Many of the terriers and other vermin hunting breeds possess an extremely high pain threshold that gives them a stoicism which hides all but the most severe pain.” -AKC
We all freak out when we hear these words as a diagnosis in our human friends and family. Though remember, our canine friends are not on this Earth for as long as our humans- though I wish they could be here forever- but that also means that some of the symptoms our human have, may not have the time to progress in the way it does for our humans.
Our senior dogs also have the ability, like humans, to still have a peaceful happy life after diagnosis - pending proper care.
For humans, the best thing is to have conversations with them and not remind them of memory lapses or mistakes they make, but rather just roll with it - add in music therapy, exercise, a diet consisting primarily of fruits and veggies and dietary supplements - and the symptoms can decrease greatly, and even slow deterioration! —Same for your senior dog! Okay, not the music therapy, but you get the picture.
I recently rescued a senior dog that was found wondering the streets, confused and in obvious pain. He is taking pain mediation and a strong anti-inflammatory. For dogs in their last years, symptom management is the most import to focus on. We are realistic, in looking at his health care in terms of quality of life and not quantity.
May favorite food for senior dogs with Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS) and even, Kidney Disease, is The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Fruit and Veggie Mix, though skip the animal protein and use Organic Spirulina-(also in our Modern Herb Superfood Supplements) , it is the most protein dense food in the world - and is a very easily digestible plant protein. It is much gentler on the kidneys, digestion, and is anti-inflammatory (animal proteins contribute to inflammation and is hard to digest for seniors). Spirulina is also packed full of antioxidants that will help ease the symptoms of CDS.
High quantities of fruits and vegetables serve to decrease the effects of cognitive dysfunction syndrome in dogs because of their antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory properties. Herbs such as lemon balm, gingko, bacopa and gotu cola have also helped reduce the symptoms of CDS. In as little as two weeks, owners feeding these recommended supplements began to see the signs of
CDS diminish. —AKC
Now, because they did such a great job explaining CDS, there is no need for me to continue further!
I suggest following this link to learn more about the symptoms and treatments of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

Fruit 4 Dogs: Benefits // Blueberries | Apples | Watermelon
Dogs are Omnivores!
Tip: Dogs need their fruits and veg to be slightly broken down for proper digestion. This means, lightly cooked, pureed, soft from exposure to air and light.
We needs fruits and veg all day long, our pups enjoy fruits and veg daily too, but only give raw fruit and veg to a dog maybe 1-3 times a week in smaller portions. Dogs need help digesting these foods, which is why its best to give them cooked or pureed.
How I like to explain is is - Out in the wild, your Jack Russell isn’t going to climb a tree to get an apple, but they will eat it after its fallen to the ground, bruised, maybe busted open and started to brown (dogs eat with their scent and this would be when the sweet smell would be strongest and most enticing).
For example
I give my pups purees, like applesauce with the only ingredients being apples
Sometimes one raw carrot for teeth cleaning (supervised)
I chop or smush fruits and put them in a container and give my pups nibbles of that all week.
They need a variety of fruits and here are are fav pics for the week!
Dog Fruit of the Week
💙Blueberries! These are a good source of dietary fiber and have Vitamin C that boosts the digestive and immune system, and help maintain healthy brain function.
🍎Apples! Dogs love the crunchy texture, apples are packed with antioxidants, and they also freshen breath and improve dental hygiene.
🍉Watermelon! Low in calories, they have so many good nutrients like beta carotene, which is super good for the eyes. They’re also a great source of vitamins A, C and B6, which helps form red blood cells and boosts the immune system.
*Make sure when feeding fruit to your pet, you always take the seeds out of any seeded fruit, and never give your dogs grapes or cherries, because they are highly toxic to dogs!*
