My Content

About a month ago, someone on Tumblr shared my private Patreon content.

Instead of apologizing for violating my clear boundaries, they made it about fandom drama. They did not say sorry. Yet, they knew they were violating my boundaries, stomping right over them, and I have proof of that:

They have since deleted this post. 

I was frustrated by the sharing of my content, but I became upset when this person decided to pretend they were protecting me from “backlash."  Let me make this clear: Seeing someone’s boundary, knowingly crossing it, and not admitting you’re wrong is bad behavior. And in the fandom interaction between a consumer and creator, it means you have become entitled.

The icing on cake? This person wasn’t even a patron. Yeah.

When you tell a story, a small fraction of people who consume it will become entitled. They think they know more about the content, about how the content should be created and published, or that they know more than the creator. They believe they know more than the others in fandom. In their minds, they justify why their experience with the content means more and is worth more and therefore they are entitled to authority. 

And often times, entitled people believe that the current stewards of a story are lacking in some way, and seek to steer the ship themselves. This is sometimes done by crossing a personal boundary. You might believe that a story has gone off the rails or it’s not being presented in the best way. That’s fine. We all have these thoughts. But you become entitled, the moment you cross a boundary, when your feeling towards a piece of media takes precedent over anyone else’s and you act on it.

We all have consumed media that makes us feel very real emotions and speaks to our life experiences. You only become guilty of entitlement when you believe your emotions are more important than the creators or the creative team or other fans. The decision to (a) disengage from a piece of media or (b) make your own, are far better options. If you can’t consider those options, ask yourself why. 

For the most part, I don’t get much of this entitlement and ignore it when I do. But this case was especially brazen. So a note to this person who shared my content: Your attempt at semi-formal writing does not excuse you from the bad thing you did. Circuitous speech can’t hide the fact that you crossed my boundaries. This is my content and my work. You do not get to decide how, when, or with whom I share my work, ever….And this entire comic is free.

Heads up for anyone who's interested in following me elsewhere if tumblr starts falling apart. It looks like my fandom activity will have to be a little more centralized for a while, but I try to use easy to mute tags for everything so folks can avoid the ships/fandoms they don't want to see. I'm not getting rid of this blog and hope to continue using it to share great fandom things, but it's always good to have backups!

Since the tumblr purge is happening soon, I wanted to signal boost a “where to find me if my blog or all of tumblr disappears!” post.

AO3 (paintedrecs): Subscribe to my account if you want to keep up to date with my fics! I have a 12 Days of Sterek fic scheduled for December 20 (a collaboration with @inkforwordsart !), and I’m hoping to get back into the swing of writing & posting things more regularly. I’d like to work through my backlog of Sterek ideas, and hopefully start writing some Sheith (Voltron) AUs.

Pillowfort (paintedrecs): Unfortunately, they’ve closed the site to new users for the time being, since they’ve been flooded by folks fleeing tumblr and need to take time to build up their servers so they don’t crash from the heavy activity. You should still be able to view my blog or add me if you’re already on there. I don’t know yet how I’ll use it; I’ll probably start moving over some of my meta/fic posts and may try to build up some fandom communities (one of the site’s features) once it’s more stable and there are more active members on the site.

Dreamwidth (paintedrecs): I honestly have NO idea how to use this site, but I had a few people ask me to join. So I have an account there now; if you’re an active user, I guess friend me and tell me what I should do with it?

Twitter (paintedrecs): I’m far more active on twitter than any of these other sites, but it’s a muddle of all my interests, not separated out cleanly into different fandom blogs like I’ve done on tumblr. I’m also currently extremely devastated by what happened with Voltron’s final season, so I don’t blame you if you don’t want to follow me over there. 

(Remember how much it hurt when Sterek shippers were called “bizarre, weird, twisted,” when Derek & Stiles were forcibly kept apart on screen until Hoechlin left the show, when sudden love interests were thrown in, when we discovered that the showrunner resented us, and we had to pull away from canon to make our own safe, thriving fandom space for Sterek? This….somehow hurts even more, because I’d trusted the Voltron showrunners not to pull another Jeff Davis.)

Anyway, I’m not planning to delete any of my blogs, and I hope they’ll stick around and still be usable for a while. But I’ve cherished the fandom community I’ve built up over the years, and I’d be so sorry to lose contact with all of you. 

There’s also a Find Me Contact Sheet for Teen Wolf fandom, which I think is a great idea and another way to find your friends/creators/fellow fans if tumblr forces us apart.

Do you really want OMGCP to be the next Voltron? The fandom is rabid enough as is, becoming a show would be like dumping a crate of matches and gasoline on a bonfire.

If OMGCP could become a show I love as much as Voltron, I’d just avoid the difficult parts of fandom and enjoy the heck out of the creators’ hard work. All fandoms seem to be getting so much more discourse-heavy, and it’s frustrating, but it shouldn’t keep people from creating beautiful things or us from loving them.

As much as I love fics where Jack has big dramatic heartfelt speeches ready when he comes out, I’m actually really glad that he’s still a dingdong in canon. He should be allowed to be himself, an awkward large boy who loves his bf and is bad at press. Just because he’s the first out guy in the NHL doesn’t mean he somehow has to earn support by being a perfect poster child- he’s had enough of that for a lifetime.
