Eusine shrugged. He'd never thought much of Lavender Town, or its tower. He liked places that felt alive, that were full of people, and Lavender Town was nothing of the sort. His memories of it were very cold and very still-- it was as if the entire town was somehow flat and grey. He supposed Morty would enjoy that sort of thing more than he. Even when they were much younger, Morty had had a sort of serenity Eusine lacked. Eusine was on the edge of his seat by default, always wanting to take off and do something else. He wasn't sure if he was content with that, or if he envied Morty's ability to happily sit still. Maybe a bit of both.

"Well, I suppose it's good we have no shortage of towers in Ecruteak, then. Also, take a moment to note that they aren't devoted solely to the dead." Which was a relief, at least to him. He looked back at his friend, a smile growing on his face. "Oh, really? In that case, I'll have to send her love back. If I could bake, I might return the second favor. I think I'll have to leave that one to you."

“To be quite honest, I prefer it when you’re the one doing the adventuring.” The corners of his mouth twitched into a small smile. “I don’t like not having you around, of course, but I’m…not much of an adventurer anymore. S’pose that’s why I spent most of my time in one place.”

“It’s all right; not much has changed, except the tower, as you said.” He bit his bottom lip lightly, sighing. Part of the reason he had gone to Lavender Town had been to visit the tower; he hadn’t seen it in years. Reaching the town to find out that the tower where he had spent part of his childhood was gone had hit him pretty hard. “My mother is fine. She sends you her love. And cookies, which are back at home.”

The man certainly looked familiar, although Eusine wasn't entirely sure how. He wasn't good at all with remembering faces and names, but he preferred to believe that he'd only seen too many to recall them all. Even so, this one stood out in his mind, and whatever faint memory he had made the man seem rather ominous.

"Hello there," he said after a moment, somewhat cautiously. "Have we met before? I seem to remember seeing you, though I can't think of where."

Eusine couldn't help feeling a little petulant at the man's words (not that he tried very hard.) The word failure, especially, stung a bit. Really, there was no need to be so--

Before he could even become properly offended, however, his interest was piqued by the phrase that followed. His eyebrows rose just slightly. "In theory, hm? What have you seen that proves otherwise, if you don't mind me asking?" Any petty offense he might have felt was far outweighed by his interest. He wasn't planning on chasing after any more legendaries himself, but the creatures in themselves still fascinated him.

"Oh, of course," he said, blinking slowly. "Mahogany Town... Yes, I think I remember. You do believe correctly, although I believe it's been a long time since we've seen each other."

[Pryce’s eyebrow went up.  He certainly hadn’t expected a polite response.]

Well, that’s unfortunate.  However, we’re both Johto natives, so we both know that attempting to find a legendary Pokemon that, by all means, does not want to be found, will result in failure.

[His eyes became distant momentarily.]  In theory, at least….

Ah, hm, what?  Oh, yes, my name is Pryce.  Mahogany Town, if you couldn’t quite place me.

And your name is…Eusine, I believe?

Eusine blinked at the older man, not quite remembering where he'd seen him before. He was a gym leader, somewhere-- and he trained ice types, if he remembered right.

"Me again?"

"Oh. No, sir, I'm afraid I'm not." He sighed. "You wouldn't be wrong. Someone else captured it. No surprise to you, I suppose.

"Remind me-- what's your name?"

Tell me, son, are you still chasing after Suicune?  Your search is fruitless, I take it?

Oh, Eusine!! Do you remember me? Ahaha~! I think we met once! …or maybe I saw you once… or something..

Oh, my. [Eusine swooped into a bow, taking the girl's hand as he did so.] I'm afraid we haven't met before, because I'm certain I'd remember someone with such style! [He stood back up with a smile, shaking her hand.] Just look at you. I'm a fan of the bow on your hat, especially. I'm often seen wearing one much like it, although I'm not sure the hat would suit me.

What's your name? I'm very pleased to make your acquaintance.

There seem to be quite a few new faces cropping up lately. For the benefit of those of you who don't already know, my name is Eusine. I'm something of a traveler, quite obviously worldly and stylish--

Although I'm a much more sedentary being these days. I may be boring, but I'm not unfriendly, so do feel free to approach me.

"I'm sure you did." Eusine waved his hand with a flourish. "I have to say, being the one who stays here while you run off and have adventures isn't nearly as much fun as when the situation was reversed. I'm almost compelled to apologize for every time I did the same."

"So you didn't even do too much adventuring. How is Lavender Town? I heard they tore down the old tower, which is really too bad." Eusine tapped a finger to his lips, trying to remember the last time he'd been to Lavender Town. It had been years, easily-- he didn't like admitting it, but the place had always set him on edge. "And your mother? I hope she's doing well."

“Oh, believe me, it’s ridiculouslyhard not to miss you. I spent a large part of my time away wishing that you were around.” Morty smiled lightly, only partially joking, fingers fiddling idly with the ends of his scarf.

“I can’t say that I didn’t expect the backlog…It will give me something to do, I suppose.” He sighed and shrugged his shoulders. “Lavender Town, mostly. Visiting my mother. I wandered for a while, thought about going towards Hoenn, but ultimately stayed around Lavender Town until I decided to come home.”

"Well of course you missed me. It's not difficult to miss me, after all. I could fill a small nation with people who sigh wistfully at the mention of my name.

I've missed you, too- and so have all the trainers who've come to challenge your gym. Some of them are quite difficult to dissuade, so I think you'll have a backlog of them for quite a while." Eusine eyed his friend curiously. "I suppose that's what important is, in fact, that you've returned, but where exactly did you go?"

“Terribly sorry. I wasn’t planning on being away for so long. But I’m back now, so that’s all that really matters, right?” He let out a soft laugh. “I did miss Ecruteak quite a bit…and you, of course.”

"Where exactly have you been? I thought vanishing for extended periods unannounced was my job, not yours. Ecruteak is extremely boring without you around, I hope you know."

Eusine continued, oblivious to any negative energy. There was a reason they'd stayed such good friends, despite their obvious differences- Eusine himself tended to be very self-centered and say whatever suited him, while Morty... didn't. While a very many people found him abrasive, Morty had never once had that reaction. At least, not that Eusine knew of. He'd never thought to ask.

"Well, I do have some dignity left over, you know. Can't lose it all, where would I be then?" He smiled slightly, deciding this wasn't exactly a light-hearted topic suitable for their first conversation in quite a while. "No trainers? Maybe they all just got lost in the dark. Just thinking about that gym gives me a headache. I suppose that would be the point, though, wouldn't it?"

Even though I haven't been doing anything particularly important, I still keep waking up at ridiculous hours of the morning... So much for doing away with stress.

Eusine blinked in surprise, before his face settled into a grim smile. "Oh, yes, I'm terribly sorry. How incredibly rude of me to make assumptions right after we've just met. I'm sure you would never do something so impolite. At least I refrained from calling you any names. Imagine if I'd called you crazy right off the bat. That would have been dreadful.

I hope you'll forgive me for this offense. I'd be heartbroken otherwise."

Why don’t you pull the stick out of your butt first?  Sheesh, it was a misunderstanding and you got all defensive and sensitive about it.  So perhaps you could learn something about manners, too.

"I'll have you know I'm not crazy. Or 'obsessed'. Dedicated, yes." He sniffed, crossing his arms (a bit lower than usual, for obvious reasons.) "Not that it matters anymore. The Pokemon chose another." Even after months, it still stung a bit to admit, not that he would show any sign of distress to this boy. (Did that mean he was normally a girl? Hm.)

"Instead of giving me insincere apologies, you should work on your manners. Your rudeness is appalling."

Well, here in Kanto we’re not as well-informed about the crazies in Johto, so basically people pass around rumors and they get twisted into strange things sometimes.  So, sorry about that.  But do you deny that you’re a little unhealthily obsessed with this one Legendary Pokemon?  Hm?

"I- What. No. No, I do not. That is absolutely vile. I can't believe you would-" This wasn't the first time he'd received such a comment, but for someone he hadn't even met to say it so off-handedly was still upsetting. He exhaled huffily, straightening his skirt. (Wow. That certainly sounded odd.)

"Thank you, I suppose. Where did you hear that nonsense?!"
