Scribbles & Drabbles writers wanted!

We can now confidently say that, with over 200 arts in the galleries, we have something for everyone.

Let's go through the main arguments in favour of a sign-up again, shall we?

You only have to write 100 words per claim.

You can claim as many arts as you can write 100 words for.

Your drabble doesn't have to be narrative prose...or anywhere near finished (the real treat is the friendships made along the way).

You can come back to your fics later and continue.

Every art can be claimed thrice, so you don't have to lose out on your fave.

We have a discord where you can exchange thoughts, puns, and cursed ideas with the artists and your fellow writers.

The arts are really cool...and so are the artists. (But what if it's all those weird, flammable, stabby Elves from that Frankensteined book? It's not, we promise. We have LOTR, we have Hobbit, we have less-known books, we have very open prompts.)

S&D has a long-ish timeline, you'll have time to completely lose your mind and be enabled encouraged to write much more than you'd planned to write.

There is no bar to reach other than your own enjoyment (while respecting MH and DNW of artists). You don't have to speak to the artist. You don't have to speak to us. Just write, post, disappear again if that's your desire.

We have a full buffet of funny, heartbreaking, and/or ludicrous prompts. From deep-felt gen to questionable explicit, we have all your heart could desire...

You can sign up and not claim, so you might just want to do this to be safe and stave off the FOMO.

All in all, Scribbles and Drabbles is a laid-back, low-pressure, high-fun event. If you want to spend the summer holidays with friends, sipping ice-cold drinks and talking about blorbos leisurely...

Roverandom Promo Post

Summary: Roverandom is the incredibly cute story of a small dog that gets turned into a toy dog by a wizard and sold to a family with children. While Roverandom just thinks of escaping and being turned back into a real dog, his new owner, Little Boy Two, loses Roverandom on the beach.

The story contain wizards, a visit and life on the moon and in the sea, it also contains dragons, and Roverandom’s adventures to be turned back into a real dog.

Why should I check out this canon? It’s a beautiful little story that contains everything one might want: dogs, adventure, magic, a bit of mythology, new friendships. It’s entertaining, and has dogs and dragons. (Don’t go and poke at the dragon, he’s ill-tempered)

Where can I get this? Roverandom is available in libraries, perhaps even your local one, or book shops. It is also available from online booksellers. Roverandom is included in Tales From the Perilous Realm, which is available on the Internet Archive.

What fanworks exist already? There are 18 fanworks on AO3, and another 3 on Fanfiction.net. Four are also available on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild

Smith of Wootton Major Promo Post

Summary: Smith of Wootton Major is a short story full of faery, adventure, baking, and other good things. The eponymous Smith has a stroke of luck as a child that opens the way to Faery, where he travels throughout his life.

Why should I check out this canon? Do you like cake? Baking? Faery? Adventure? Good things happening to people who deserve good things? Hopeful endings? If you answered 'yes' to any of the above, you should definitely check out Smith of Wootton Major.

Where can I get this? At the bookseller or public library of your choice. Be aware that while you can get it as a standalone book, it’s also to be found bundled with other Tolkien short stories in collections such as Tales From The Perilous Realm, or Poems and Stories. (If you’re checking out several of our promo fandoms for the first time, this might be something to keep in mind. There is a copy of Tales From the Perilous Realm available on the Internet Archive.)

What fanworks already exist? At time of writing, there are 33 works on AO3 (one is a translation);  5 may also be found on SWG.

Horn of Gondor Promo Post

Summary: Horn of Gondor is a fantastic fan film that follows Borondir, a knight of Gondor charged alongside 5 other knights to bring a message to the horse lords of the North, to the Eorlingas. Gondor is in a difficult position, losing a terrible war: will the messengers be able to bring Gondor’s plea for help to the Horse Lords? Will they be in time?

Why should I check out this canon? It’s fan made but it’s beautiful. The cast is PERFECT, the story is full of adventure, the fights are beautiful and the story itself keeps your attention from start to finish, once you start the film you will not be able to look away, and to add to all of it, the decor, the landscape is gorgeous. All of it looks like it belongs in Tolkien's Middle Earth. 

Where can I get this? HORN OF GONDOR (2020) A Tolkien Fan Film.

What fanworks exist already? I have alas found no work already existing for this fandom (but you could be the first)

Minimum word count is 100 words, but the sky is your limit! Also, every piece of art can be claimed 3 times, so you have a triple chance to get an amazing story for your idea!

✨Tolkien Fairytale & Folklore Week | Prompts 2025✨

Day 1 | December 1st | Magical Creatures

From dragons and werewolves to ents, eagles, and wargs — Middle-earth is filled with creatures drawn from deep myth. You can explore the beasts of Tolkien's world or borrow from outside lore: unicorns, selkies, kelpies, or kitsune. Are they protectors or predators, cursed or divine?

Day 2 | December 2nd | Gods and Mythologies

Tolkien’s Valar echo ancient pantheons. This is your day for gods, creators, prophets, angels, and archetypes — inspired by Norse, Greek, Hindu, Abrahamic, or other mythologies. Explore the Ainur, the Music of the Spheres, the afterlife, fate, and the mythic grandeur of Aman.

Day 3 | December 3rd | Fairytales

Tolkien called The Hobbit “a fairy story.” Retell classic fairytales in Middle-earth, or create your own: riddles in the dark, changelings, talking animals, curses, and transformations. Incorporate tales from around the world and reflect the many cultures of Arda.

Day 4 | December 4th | Arthuriana

Knights, castles, noble quests, betrayal, fate. Think of Aragorn’s return as king, the fall of Númenor as Camelot undone, or Galadriel as the Lady of the Lake. Explore themes of loyalty, exile, prophecy, and the weight of lineage. Wizards, swords, and star-crossed lovers welcome.

Day 5 | December 5th | Local Legends

From the Shire to Harad, every land in Arda has stories passed down in shadows. Write ghost tales told in Bree, riddles of the Rohirrim, or urban legends of Gondor. You can also bring in folklore from your own culture, region, or family — the tales your grandmother told, reimagined in Tolkien’s world.

Day 6 | December 6th | Epic Quests and Ancient Sagas

Inspired by Beowulf, the Odyssey, Mahabharata, and other foundational epics. Tell of great journeys, slaying of monsters, trials of strength and mind, exile, homecoming, or the cost of glory. How does the tale change depending on who tells it? What is forgotten, and what becomes legend?

Day 7 | December 7th | Objects and Relics

Heirlooms, magical tools, cursed treasures — Tolkien loved objects that carried meaning across generations. Explore named swords, Silmarils, palantíri, or lost rings. Or invent your own: charms, talismans, relics, and ancestral artifacts that tie memory and myth together.

I am collecting survey data as part of my research on the "Living Legendarium", i.e., how the legends of Arda, from their earliest drafts by Tolkien to the posthumously published Silmarillion edited by Christopher Tolkien to the creative engagements by fans, are inherently indeterminate and mutable, inviting many and diverse interpretations. 

This portion of the study focuses on the various ways that fans of the Silmarillion understand and imagine the relationship between Maedhros, Maglor, Elrond, and Elros: the "kidnap fam". 

The resulting paper will be presented at Mereth Aderthad on July 19 2025 and published afterwards on the Silmarillion Writers' Guild.
