A lot of the time, we subconsciously inherit dysfunction from our own communities, friends and even families. You become who you are around. It’s very hard to break the cycle as we often don’t even realize that we’re being influenced. It’s so important to take some time, whether in prayer (my personal preference), journaling, or speaking with someone to reflect, review and revise how we are thinking, speaking and acting. We have to bring our subconscious tendencies to the forefront of our minds if we want to change the world because we need to remember that change starts from within. While I’m not a parent, I do find that it’s most important to do this, especially if you are a parent. When the Bible states that we inherit sin from our parents, a lot of the time, we inherit it because our parents have a huge influence on us and Hereford we pick up on their way of being. (Love you mom and dad! This isn’t a slight towards you or any parents, I promise.) My point is that who we are affects those around us and change can and will only start from within. Is the person you want to identify as aligning with what you do? Reflect, review and revise. Repeat this every so often and hopefully we can all break our own cycles of dysfunction. I know how tough this year was. We have all experienced loss, grief and/or anger in some way or another. It took a toll on us mentally and physically. There was an overload of illness, political division and let’s be real... murder hornets. I’m still unsure if I’ll ever understand God’s purpose in creating murder hornets during my time here on Earth. I don’t want to dwell on how much this year “sucked”. While in many ways it did, I also want to share my gratitude for how much this all brought so many suppressed emotions and problems to the surface, both personally and globally. I truly don’t believe we could ever make any progress without these trials, so for that, I am deeply grateful. I am so grateful that my loved ones are healthy and that I’m bringing my husband, family (especially my nephew and soon-to-be nephew), best friends and spiritual father into the New Year with me. I know this new year will come with its ups and downs as they all do but I’m hoping we’re all better prepared and more compassionate towards our neighbors as we journey through it together. I hope everyone has a happy and safe night. Please, if not for yourself, then for those around you, do NOT drive drunk tonight. I ran the United Nations Association of New York’s first 5K race celebrating UN Day and the 75th anniversary of the UN! Through everyone's contributions to the event, we were able to raise $3,300.00, one hundred percent of which was donated to a food pantry here in New York City called One Community.
