Tomorrow we visit the 3 buildings we have to choose from for our Hybrid. I had already made a few notes of things I wanted for my spaces. I will visit each site to make sure I make the right choice and took note of all my options.
Features I mainly want are external walls - for the windows for my Micro Apartments - and atleast 2floors worth of space - I preferably would like a large soup kitchen social area on the ground floor of my Homeless Shelter, and the floor above to be for the classrooms and skill learning spaces.

Hybrid - Ideas and Inspiration
I was struggling for ideas for my other hybrid space. I knew I wanted something open, and as Micro Apartments are so economical I had thought about the contrasting space being an indoor garden maybe, where lodgers could grow their own food and the public could come and treat it as a park. But I wanted something deeper, more meaningful.
One day when talking to a friend about the new project and Micro Spaces, she mentioned a hotel she had seen somewhere in Japan where business men stayed for the night. The difference between this hotel and any other was that they did not buy a room for the night, but a bed, and these beds were stacked one above the other like a honeycomb.
I found this really intriguing and decided to look it up. It turned out to be a 9 Hour Kyoto Hotel where the client spends a maximum of 9hours (1hour to shower, 7 for showering, and another to prepare for the new day) overnight.

I thought this was a really interesting, thorough concept and it got me thinking about how I could possibly use a similar idea in my Hybrid maybe.... Eventually instead of thinking about the spaces, I thought about the people. The micro-apartments would most likely be home to single, city workers.... what if my contrasting idea was to be for the homeless and jobless? A refuge where they can go clean up and learn skills to help them find a job.... maybe spend the night?

Christmas Holidays - Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
Whilst visiting my mum's family in the city of Bilbao, Spain, I always tend to take some time to visit The Guggenheim. This visit was no exception so I went with my mum one afternoon to see what new exhibitions there were.
Frank Ghery's creation was holding the work of Claes Oldenberg and Egon Schiele - neither of which really floated my boat...
Claes Oldenberg's The Sixties exhibition I found amusing for a while but the work generally did not interest me. It mainly consisted of typical every day objects from the sixties, along with food and clothes, all made from different fabrics and fillings to a huge scale:

Egon Schiele's exhibition had a similar effect on me. His work consists of drawings which are mainly portraits, and although his style is different, it isn't one which appeals to me:

So all in all it wasn't one of my favourite visits to the Guggi, but luckily due to family connections, we always get free entry so was worth the visit.

Just before we break up for Christmas we were set a mini hand in: 3 adjectives describing our space with an image per word.
As you know, I have come up with one the ideas for my Hybrid, but I still don't really know what to contrast it against. All I know is that one of my micro flats involve very small, compact spaces, so I was thinking I could contrast them against a large open space.
So these were the words and images I presented on Thursday 13th December:
Compact - I chose the image of the two owls in their nest as I want to create a warm, comforting feeling in my micro spaces. Although the space is to be small I want it to be homely.
Open - Unfortunately without knowing exactly what I am doing as my contrast I used a rather vague word. I just know I want to create something quite vast as a contrast which gives a sense of freedom. I chose this image as I thought it was a rather beautiful image which portrayed these qualities well, however, this page may be changed at a later date.
Advanced - The micro-apartments are said to be the next big thing and a solution to our economic climate at present. The small spaces require minimal energy usage and are a cheap alternative to city living. The image itself I scanned from one of the magazine articles. This particular micro home is found on Fogo Island east of Canada consisting of only 30m2.

Video
youtube
This is a video I found of the same apartment I saw in George Clarke's Amazing Spaces. What I find particularly clever about this space is how well the room has been taken advantage of. The design is exquisite! Everything you need is in that one, 24square m space, and yet it feels spacious when you first walk in!

Hybrid - Ideas and Inspiration
Simone had also mentioned how she would be quite interested if some sort of accommodation could be used as an idea, as apparently this was a choice a lot were ignoring. I realised I had come across many articles about Micro Living - mini spaces which consisted of everything you needed to live in and which are fast becoming the next big thing!

As well as these articles, George Clark's Amazing Spaces is being shown as a series on tv with a similar idea - mini spaces being converted to living, business and holiday spaces. What I found particularly interesting about these Micro Spaces were the genius of the design. Every cm has to be taken advantage of in order for these designs to work.

Hybrid - Ideas and Inspiration
This is our first project on which we get to spend more than a few weeks on, and therefore I really want to put my all into it. As my last project took a more traditional turn, I really want to do something much more contemporary for this next space.
I had come up with a couple of ideas, I'm really interested in tattoo and body art so I thought about contrasting a tattoo/body piercing parlour with a beauty clinic. This way I'd be contrasting the stigma of tattoos and piercings against the "natural" look people are trying to achieve when visiting a beauty clinic... However, I didn't feel this was deep enough as an idea. I had also thought about a spa/bar in which tranquility would be contrasted against bustle. My idea had been inspired by an article which I saw in magazine, Diseno Interior: Interiorismo Arquitectura y Diseno (Interior Design: Interior Architecture and Design). The article was called "La Ciudad de la Belleza" which translates to "The City of Beauty":

I liked the idea of having mini spaces in one big space which create a "city", but when I went to our tutorial we were told that we were not to do any bars or restaurants.

Hybrid - Brief
On Tuesday 4th of December we received our brief for our new project, Hybrid. The idea is to choose two, preferably contrasting, ideas to fill a building (which shall be given to us at a later date):
" In conventional terms, the form of a space is evolved or dictated by its function or programme i.e. it’s use. However, by considering only one programme, this approach dictates that the end result will be somewhat predictable as a similar language is developed throughout. Thus, our supermarkets, libraries and cinemas look much like those that have gone before them.
The aim of this project is to create a diffused view of our conventional spaces by considering more than one programme, with the intention to make places that do not yet exist. The result should be a thematic hybrid space, ie. the combination of compatible programmes that can define or merge boundaries or a disparate hybrid space that emphasizes and cultivates the differences between two opposing programmes.
You are required to select either two compatible programmes (eg. a coffee and a book shop), or two opposing programmes (eg. a cinema and a church), to act as catalysts for your hybrid space. When selecting a programme try to consider those that, while part of everyday life, are often neglected in terms of aesthetics and remodelling. It is important for you analyse and research each programme to then formulate the contents of your hybrid. You will be required to design in detail at least one element of your hybrid space giving due consideration to construction and materiality. You must evidence the development of your hybrid space through the usual tools of sketching, models, measured technical drawings, visualisation and presentation.
The location of your hybrid will be in central Manchester. Plans of the building will be presented on week 2 or 3 of the project. "

Corian Solid Surfaces
As a way of practicing our research and presentation skills we were each assigned a material to produce an A2 sheet of information and presents. I was given Corian Solid Surfaces, a material which proved to be quite easy to find information on. Here is my presentation sheet.

Tim Peaks with SPACEMEN
Friday, 23rd November 2012
Our final day with SPACEMEN and the day of our opening was upon us. We met up bright and early and got on with our spaces. Claire and Maria proceeded with the Tim Burgess stencil, later to be placed against the centre window. In the mean time I went to get our Tim Burgess Artwork printed which consisted of a mixture of photographs, album covers, and images of artwork we'd found.
When it came to placing the printed of artwork into our screens, however, we realised they probably didn't work with the rest of the space:

We realised there just was far too much going on in this one room and these were the weekest of the elements, so we decided there and then to scrap the idea of the screens. This worked well as it gave Group 1 room for their awesome coffee tables.
Another problem occurred: Whilst every other day of the week had been miserable and dark, today the weather chose to be stunning and bright. This meant that our projections weren't really showing up... We just had to home for the best.

Meanwhile everything else went smoothly. The stencil went up and looked BRILLIANT! Our "head in the holes" found their spaces. Then we played around with the projections trying to find the best spot for them. Luckily as the winter darkness came early the projections were nice and bright by the time people started arriving.
The opening was a great success and we had lots of fun making it happen. It's just a shame it all had to go by monday...

We decided on having two projections in our space: one with the live Twitter Feed containing the tweets to the hashtag we created for the event, #timpeakscafe. We also wrote this at the bottom of our "head in the hole"s as we hope people would hashtag photos they take with their smartphones to the page. It was also fun to see Tim Burgess himself retweeting our tweets!!! :D
The second projection will be a loop of music videos from both Tim's Charlatan days and solo career.
