one day im gonna actually analyze the way harusono shou's work has influenced my drawing and writing style in the past few years, particularly for comics. cause i sat here staring at the last page from my previous post and that's. 100% a harusono thing. having a single frame that feels busy and packed with dialogue coming from and directed at different sources. these specific panels from hirakagi chapters 25 and 27 respectively come to mind.
things like having several strings of dialogues at once; a primary conversation and then a secondary, smaller conversation happening simultaneously in the background is a manga thing in general but i think they are such harusono trademarks as well. i read the manga in japanese for self study and i always pay special atention to these types of panels. not just cause i have to brace myself to do a lot of translating, but i also take the time to notice how these dialogues connect with each other, linguistically and visually. (though anyone could do it just by reading, but i feel there is a difference between reading with intention vs just breezing through)
like that second example has 4 interactions happening at the same time, with hirano having 2 separate conversations with ichinose, while also adressing hanzawa. and hanzawa having exchanges with both hirano and ichinose. crazy. (and the only way for the reader to know who's speaking first or answering to what is through following the natural flow of the speech bubbles and that is actually such a tricky thing to do as a comic artist, though visual cues like the text font and bubble design help).
i think this is how harusono is able to establish so many character dynamics and worldbuilding without taking space from the main story. the result are these highly busy frames but it's also what makes her works feel so animated and real and Alive.
#trulyyyyy#harusono's ability to draw varied background characters#and to flesh out stuff in the background#is just soooo. its genuinely exceptional#like how crazy is it that we know that theres a freshman on the basketball team#whos taller than kagi and his name is kuda#and hes probably the guy they talk abt in the novel#who did track and field in middle school and is a basketball beginner#and also we know hes in kagis contacts#its just all there!#her world just feels so rich its amazing#harusono#meta

how do people format ellipses?
hey everyone kiri here. I've been reading the chicago manual of style instead of writing fic again. Every time i do this I'm always shaken by the fact that the way the Chicago style and the AP style of formatting ellipses both feel So Wrong (for those wondering, AP stands for associated press and thus deals with newswriting, whereas chicago gets used in book publishing)
Oh, look! I just used an ellipsis. This is a perfect segue to talk about how I format things. And also to add a "keep reading" because I'm not good at conciseness
the above usage of an ellipsis is how I've always done mine. The three periods that auto-correct into a single "ellipsis" character in most word processors gets places right after a word, and I add a space afterwards. If I'm starting with an ellipsis, though, that usage looks weird. "… This doesn't feel too right to me." I adapt it into this: "…This fits my aesthetic preference." For punctuation, the question mark comes right after…? which, now that I look at it, feels weirdly tight compared to the spacing I use.
My dim recollections of fic seem to have ellipses follow either my pattern or this pattern, where spaces have been entirely eliminated. So an ellipsis is then formatted…like so. I would have to do a proper survey of everything I've read fic-wise to see if this is indeed the case, but like... isn't it pretty wild that the chicago and AP style of formatting follow neither convention?
Okay. I was about to discuss the Chicago style and then spent a half an hour of reading to find that there's no example of starting sentences with an ellipsis. This is because the Chicago manual of style is primarily meant for publishing nonfiction, and thus deals with ellipses as they're used in the function of quoting stuff, not to represent faltering speech like in fiction. Fiction publishing style is a bit looser, and a lot of publishing places have their own house style that's followed (as far as I can tell, they still lean pretty close to Chicago, though!)
Anyways, the ellipsis in Chicago style is three periods, separated by non-breaking spaces. The non-breaking spaces means that the ellipsis won't be split over one line, so the ellipsis is essentially treated like a word and not like three separate periods. Like a word, there's spaces on each side, like . . . this. The usage of non-breaking spaces is so uncommon that the manual actually advises to use the traditional ellipsis character we see, like … this and let an editor find and replace that stuff. By the way, that there, with the normal ellipsis Word and other word processor programs will auto-format for you? That's the AP style.
For formatting ellipses differences, though, you can't always treat it like just a word. When you're dealing with a question mark . . . ? You would leave a space afterwards. The same is true for a period or a comma, but if you were ending a dialogue you would indeed cut the space at the end. "Like so . . ." For faltering speech it works rather like an em dash, which used to be the recommended method of formatting faltering speech, I believe.
That's all of my random musings for today. I don't know if any of these non-breaking spaces or ellipsis characters were actually preserved in uh the tumblr editor, so let's see about that one. I copy pasted the ellipses in from Word but the rest was written straight into the tumblr editor which is why you're looking at these lovely straight and uncurled quotes. I'm also sure I've gotten some detail wrong here so feel free to correct me. Finally, if I were to one day decide to change to the Chicago style of ellipses, I assume you'd begin dialogue ". . . Like so."

TASHIRO I LOVE TASHIRO Specifically rotating Adult AU Tashiro in my brain today. Do you think he watches all of Shirahama's streams. And listens to Miyano ramble about what the students get up to. And came with the others to help Kuresawa plan his wedding. Does he ask Miyano how his old senpai is doing? Do he and Hanzawa keep in contact? Is he still playing ping pong when he feels like it? Oh wait you wanted questions. do you think he still dyes his hair like that on purpose
ADULT AU TASHIRO SET ME ON FIRE WHEN I FIRST SAW IT. His four pages of beautiful deadpan glory. He's so so so cute in them This ain't about that. His deadpan expression though is suuuuuper interesting. And the way hes the first one to catch on to Miyano's situationship. And the way he fully does Not Care. Get over yourself, miyano. He's so matter of fact about it all. Anyways. He definitely watches shirahama's streams...maybe even cameos sometimes...and listens to miyano about Stuff.... and mayyybe helped with Kuresawa's wedding. Do they have best mans in japan. Hm. I dunno. I do think Kuresawa probably deferred to yuki in the wedding process. But miyano would be his best man if they have those. And tashiro would be there and be involved in Some Way. Cause he loves his friends. But anyways Yeah he engages with his #friends.... i would say he and hanzawa definitely keep up (canonical that they regularly also hang out with the previous ping pong club president) (harusono's posted about it a few times on twitter) but then i remembered this is adult au where everything is slightly off. So maybe they didn't keep up as much..... im gonna believe they did though. Unless proven otherwise. Definitely still plays ping pong, primarily with the old guys at the bathhouse. DEFINITELY STILL DYES HIS HAIR ON PURPOSE.... personal bummer that he doesnt let it grow out. But thats my own personal pipe dream. But its still really cute how adamant he was to like. I think he dyed his hair the summer between middle and high school. And when he gets to high school, his brand new club presidents tell him Dude dont dye your hair. And hes stubborn enough to not dye it back but not stubborn enough to keep dying the roots. So it grows out. And i think on freaking Graduation Day, or thereabouts, he cuts and dyes it bleach blond all over. I'd really really like Harusono to give me any more lore about Why he dyes it. Probably a simple reason (looks cool) but it could be something crazy.... you never know.... anyways. I wanna bring it back to his demeanor in adult au. His deadpan expression. He seems so mellow. Which is interesting because I think I and a lot of people consider him a lot more cheery than this. So i think it's interesting that Harusono shows off this side of him here.... very mellow and matter-of-fact. I dont quite have much more to add to that right now. But im gonna chew on it some more... keep it in the back of my mind...
#:) this is a great post#:) I’ve been thinking Lots abt adult au tashiro these days#harusono#meta#tashiro gonzaburou
