ART AND CHEMISTRY MIXER

Evidence of paper marbling has been found around the world, dating back to the 12th century. Artist Garip Ay has continued this tradition—which is called ebru in his native Turkish—by creating this portrait of Vincent van Gogh. The technique relies on preventing the water-based black background and the paint placed on top of it from mixing. The background is made with water, a black dye, and some carrageenan, which is a gelling agent that makes the paint easier to move and shape. Garip Ay mixed the paint with a solution containing bile taken from cows’ livers, called ox gall. The bile salts in the ox gall work as surfactants, reducing the surface tension between droplets within the paint and allowing the color to spread across the watery black background without sinking down into it. Once complete, Garip Ay transferred the image by laying a piece of paper on the liquid’s surface.
