Theory Time! Mirth the Obelisk’s Identity

Okay so I’m not experienced in this kind of thing so this is mostly going to just be some disjointed thoughts but I was reading it over and it just occurred to me. This may get a bit long so uhhh

So what we know is that Velya is in a very rough spot. Having lost her apprentice Fetter, the next in line to take her place as the Master Archaeologian, the guild is at risk of being taken over by Ebonhide. Detailed more here in Ancient Fascinations.

Velya is very old and is worried she may not have enough time left to train a new apprentice. So all of her hopes lay with Fetter.

Now, in the Subterranean Secrets lore tab, we meet Mirth. He is the first Obelisk to awaken to greet Velya and the explorers and has an interesting emotional reaction to meeting Velya. Namely:

“The stone dragon was overcome with a sudden wave of paternal love and profound affection for the old dragon. But beneath it lay anguish, grief, and deep fear that he failed her. How could I have failed her? I don’t even know her!”

Mirth feels, for some reason, as though he has failed Velya. A dragon that, by all accounts, he should know nothing about. It’s also mentioned that the Earthshaker must have chosen to awaken Mirth first for a reason.

So my theory is that, when Fetter disappeared, he somehow ended up where the Earthshaker was beginning to create the Obelisk dragons. And, either by choice in order to help protect Sornieth, or against his will in order to prevent him from sharing what he saw, the Earthshaker turned Fetter into an Obelisk dragon and he lost his memory of his past life.

Flight Rising commission for Naeryl of their dragon Almach!

[ID: A wildclaw dragon from Flight Rising sits at a small podium, practicing Light magic, during a relaxing sunny morning.
