something I've gleaned from/have really been ruminating on from the Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid interviews is that their characters are such subversions of what they are. Louis is filled with primal rage, he wants to hurt people, he is hungry for violence, yet he overcompensates and smothers his instincts with elegance (borrowed directly from Jacob's interview). I feel that Lestat does something similar but inverted-- he is filled with desperation for love, he is pathetic in his seeking it, he wants to own someone, yet he veils this vulnerability in cruelty and affected indifference. I feel that there is something really intrinsic to their relationship in the facades hide behind.

there are multiple lines in the show about the idea of this mutually cannibalistic type of love, where the prey becomes at last the predator, but I specifically think that the following exemplifies this dynamic: "I... a vampire, was being hunted. With every breath, every heartbeat, every sidelong glance, Louis was saying, 'Come to me.'... How do you know that it was not your own voice, Louis? Speaking your own unspeakable desires. Screaming them in the darkness in the hopes that I would come to you!" (Lestat in S2E7, "I could not prevent it") and "I was being hunted. And I was completely unaware it was happening." (Louis in S1E1, "In throes of increasing wonder") These quotes, and their dynamic as a whole, reminds me of the essay "Love of the Wolf" by Hélène Cixous in Stigmata (forgive the long excerpt):

I think this essay is a really apt lens through which to view their relationship, and I'm curious if this work or those similar played any role in the characterization of these characters.

Remember when Hannes sacrificed himself protecting Eren and Mikasa from the Smiling Titan, the same Titan that killed Eren's mother? And Eren broke down from grief, remembering his mother's words that he had to be strong to protect Mikasa, and thinking that he failed? But Mikasa, thinking this was their last moment alive, told him that he hadn't failed, because he did protect her and continued to inspire her to keep living and moving forward no matter what? Thanking him for saving her and giving her a new purpose in life, wanting those to be her last words before they both die? And Eren was so moved by her words that he refused to die, refused to give up, and activated the power within him to control Titans, kill the Smiling Titan and save Mikasa? And this made Ymir realize that Eren possessed the Coordinate, meaning Historia did have a future within the Walls and no longer needed Ymir to protect her? And then Ymir booped Historia's head in a tender goodbye, told her she's sorry, and left to save Reiner and Bertholdt because they saved her from decades of being trapped in nightmarish mental torture, and she was so selfless and self-hating that she felt indebted to return the favour and give back her borrowed life? And Historia's stunned expression as Ymir left her, her desperate hands reaching out for her, wanting to go after her, so Connie literally had to drag her horse back by the reigns? And the soundtrack that started playing was a lullaby sung by children, over the surviving Scouts' escape but also Reiner, Bertholdt, and Ymir's, because at the end of the day, they were ALL just children forced to be soldiers and this entire situation was a horrible tragedy and they all deserved better?

As a kid, I spent quite a while staring at my family's tattered paperback cover for Lloyd Alexander's The High King, the fifth and final book in the high fantasy kid's book series 'Chronicles of Prydain.'

It's a visceral scene that pulls the viewer in like any cover should. Check out the fear in those bugging eyes. The ligaments of the knee. The ligaments on that Couldron-born zombie's neck. A lot of ligaments in this one! This image may have been my childhood introduction to the concept of ligaments.

The artist is the Belgian illustrator Jean-Léon Huens (1921-1984).
