I’m just amused the entire fandom has collectivelly decided that Jude is brown when her skin color isn’t mentioned in the books. I’m not bothered by it. I’m just curious how did everyone come to that conclusion. Every time I see a new fanart she gets darker and darker.
shrug
I did see where Holly Black said Jude is part Latina. I never did see where she said she is brown though?

I think you get me, in a way.
Imagine if Holly had said Jude was ASIAN and everyone cracked their knuckles and said “alright then, Japanese it is”. Its not wrong, really, but technically there are sooo many other types of Asians, why did everyone settle on Japanese?
I’m Latina, from a long line of Latinos. Caribbean Latina in fact, and my skin is white, my dad is blond, my grandma has blue eyes. Latinos come in every color from Albino and the palest of whites to the deepest and darkest of browns and blacks.
And the moment Holly announced Jude is Latina everyone cracked their knuckles and said “alright, brown it is”.
So I guess I was just intrigued if it was because of stereotypes, or if people imagined her similar to themselves, if they just wanted a character to represent brown people in a fantasy setting, etc.
I mean, Jude being brown isn’t right or wrong, she can be any shade, Latinos come in all shades.

Why is Oak in charge of this mission and what does Holly Black mean when she says that he hides secrets?
theories
♡ Oak wants the favor of kings and proves that he is worthy of being king, since he is almost 18, the age at which Jude wanted to crown him, but let's remember that Oak did not want to be king unless he changed his position in these years.
♡ The kings (Cardan and Jude) asked Oak to fulfill this mission because of his closeness to Suren.
♡ The one I like the least is the one that says that Oak has other intentions with this trip, betraying his family, although I don't think it's likely.
♡ and the last one that I like the most is that Oak makes this trip to help her sister Jude, since she is pregnant and cannot cope with commitments that put her health at risk.
Of course, none of this is real, much less confirmed, they are just theories based on what little is known about the plot. We can only wait for the book to be published, but in the meantime it's fun to build theories.
