As I sit upon this green roof, I feel, for the first time in Berlin, I am above the density, above the chaos of urban life. The sky, the birds, the wind. Up here, its all more intense, more perceivable. Its moments like these I feel at home, I feel in touch with natural forces that would otherwise not penetrate the deep city blocks. Up here, I feel safe and at ease.

If you like green facades, you’ll love this street!
For an entire block on on side of the street, the facades are covered with vines, a pleasant contradiction to the bare facades only 20 meters away.
In Prenzlauger Berg, Berlin, these facades are a part of my research studies of how various green spaces in Berlin help to change the human perception of density!

As architect students, we have quite work-heavy semesters, but that doesn’t discourage us one bit! And after many sleepless nights, we adapt the ability to sleep in any context, on any surface!

Berlin loves it’s rain
When it’s past 8am, and it’s still as dark as when I woke at 5am...you know it’s gonna rain...Welcome to Berlin!

Happy Thanksgiving!
And a happy day it was. Although we cannot be with our own families on this holiday, we celebrated nonetheless here at CityLAB Berlin. The whole group was together at last; professors, their families, us students, and even some extra friends and their families! It was a night to remember....not to mention all the stellar food served! We were quite full of food by the nights end, but certainly not full of the good times had.
Next year I will not be here to celebrate Thanksgiving, although it is one I will never forget; one I will always miss!

How Am I here?!?!
Ever wonder what made the study abroad experience possible for me? Well that would be my school back in the USA, Norwich University. Their hub here in Berlin, CityLAB Berlin, is a refreshing and fantastic place to continue my studies in architecture. Follow the link below to check out CityLAB's Facebook page! Here, you'll find info about everyone's experiences, and what the school is up to. It may be a nice change versus hearing about my rants on my blog :p

Berliners, come one come all, to our upcoming art exhibition! Good vibes will certainly be present here! See the event description below:
“From light bulbs and piping, to tree branches and found objects.”
This one day exhibition, Sunday, November 29th, will feature installations from seven students portraying the narrative of the urban wasteland, and the relationship between human and city.  As the construction of an apartment building threatens to overtake the site, these site specific installations respond to and engage with the past, present, and future.  Through people, object, and form, the artworks have been progressing side by side with this urban setting, and will only be fully realized upon the opening of the exhibition.  The opening is a celebration of the works in their intended form, before society and nature poetically break them down, revealing their ever expanding narratives. Kunst Park embodies a gestural transformation and reclamation of this urban wasteland.
I hope to see you all there friends!

What’s the next must-see facade of Berlin?
Well that’s this guy right here!
For once, I don’t know the name of the building, it’s purpose, or the architect! I spotted it from across the river Spree one day, and immediately fell in love.
Curvalinear forms mask the geometrical windows behind it. The off-green tint adds to its uniqueness and mysteriousness.
Berlin never bores me, and it’s because of buildings like this!

Berlin is best seen on a bike!
The University was generous enough to hook us up with Tokyo Bikes!
Rain or shine, these beauties will get you around in style, just watch out for broken glass. It’s everywhere, and WILL pop your tire. And in my case...twice.
Nonetheless, I wouldn’t have seen nearly as much of Berlin without this beast...and I got it in my favorite color, purple!

As a Vermonter, I’ve seen some leaves in my day, but never, and i mean never, one as large as this. My day was made, needless to say!!!

I was planning on posting of our recent outings, but I believe the tragedy in Paris, and the death of a hometown friend takes precedence, and deserves respect and attention.
Last Wednesday, a friend of mine, Jordan Pfenning, was taken much to early, having been struck by a car last Monday night, and passing while in the hospital under critical care. He was a stellar guy, full of life. He had this amazing energy that livened up any social situation. From shredding Okemo, to fishin’ at Red Bridge, and everything in between, our small Vermont community will never be the same again.
And the horrible events that took place Friday night in Paris were certainly felt here in Berlin, and throughout the world. What was done is unacceptable, inhumane, and downright unforgivable by those who orchestrated the killings. I hope the hammer of justice hits them hard.
It is in times like this the nations of the world, and my small Vermont community must stand strong. Our international community must do whatever it takes to find a solution, together, and without more lives lost.
I do not know what forces drive this world, and how so much evil can persist, repeatedly. And I will never know the answers to these questions. Who are we to decide what will live and what will die, who is anyone to control destiny? In these dark times, we must not lose ourselves, and must not lose touch with the world that is provided for us.
Being human can be great, no matter what is on our plate. We can all get by, and find solutions, find means to ease our emotions.
This week for myself was a giant wave of emotions, I did not know my purpose or my place among the chaos we call life. But with the help of great family and friends, who care so much, I realized getting back to myself wasn’t as hard as I had thought. In the end, that’s all we need to stand up in the face of evil and conquer- those great people who we chose to share our lives with.
“Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Folk in these bad times had lots of chances of giving up, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.... That there's some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”
I urge you all to remember everyone that was lost this week, and to never forget what happened, this especially goes for all my frends back in Vermont. Don’t dwell in these bad times, and don’t be afraid of your emotions. We are all here for each other, and we will all stand taller in the end.
With all this in mind, and a bit of time, we will get by, that I do know.
My love goes out to everyone, especially to the Pfenning Family and the country of France.
Peace and good times can prosper once again. We can get through this!

Looking for a delicious new brew to satisfy your taste buds? Why not try this gem, Berliner Pilsner!
Founded in 1902, Berliner Pilsner has been a favored choice among the German population, offering a plethora of different brews, this one here being the classic go to.
With a golden tint, and cap of white foam, this pilsner goes down quite easy, and does not make you feel full compared to other pilsners of the same alcohol content. Its aroma is quite earth, refreshing to the nose just as much as it is to your mouth. Best served in a traditional Berliner mug, one sip will make you longing for more.
Graphically, this is probably my favorite. The classic Berlin Bear can be seen hoisting a platter of three beers, with a gridded dome in the back drop. Furthermore, the red fill of the bear figure really makes it pop! A very simple graphic, and yet very iconic, very memorable, and certainly successful.
I wish we had this in America!

Again on Hagia Sohpia,
I had mentioned we paid to get a private tour (my good friend Keith and myself), but what I did not mention is that we had the most enthusiastic, kind hearted, knowledgeable, comical, downright amazing tour guide, EVER! His name is Cem (pronounced gem).
He certainly made the experience much much more memorable, and I’m grateful the stars aligned so that we could share in the experience with him.
Cem, where ever you may be, I hope life is treating you well.
Many thanks for the good vibes friend! Hopefully our paths cross again some day!
