The Harmonia Macrocosmica is a large book approximately 21 inches in height, 14 inches wide and 3 inches thick. Within, Cellarius provided a detailed summary of the history of astronomical accomplishments. The geocentric cosmology of Claudius Ptolemy from antiquity was compared to the hypotheses of Nicolas Copernicus for a heliocentric system, and then to Tycho Brahe’s compromise geo-heliocentric universe. To augment a text that was detailed and tediously long, Cellarius added 28 illustrations. These images became his legacy. With double-­page, foldout figures printed from finely engraved copper plates, Cellarius and his publisher Johannes Jansson created the most elegant and beautiful set of tutorial charts ever seen."
