Not to get into semantics too much, but around these parts we have "barrel vaults" which is actually a type of ceiling that is comprised of series of continuous Half-Circle Arches.  So, if you're looking for only a doorway or entranceway you would order the Half-Circle Arch. But if you wanted that arch to continue down the hallway you would choose our Barrel Vault. But either way, we'll know what you mean!

You will then need to cut out the opening using either a drywall saw or a jigsaw. Once this is completed, you can begin constructing the frame of your arch using wood or metal laths. You will then need to attach them together and secure them into place with nails or screws. Next, fill in any gaps with mortar before applying plaster over the entire structure. Finally, use sandpaper or a sander to smooth out any edges and give your arch its desired shape and look. With these steps, you can create an attractive arched doorway that adds character and charm to any room in your home.

Does an arched doorway need to have a door?

An arched doorway does not necessarily need to have a door, in this case we'd probably call it an arched entryway instead. But we're not ones to split hairs, so if you tell us you want an arched doorway and it doesn't have a door, we'll know what you mean! An open arched doorway (or arched entryway) can be used for both aesthetic and practical purposes, providing an inviting entryway into another room without the need for a door. Depending on the layout of your home, you could even use an archway as part of a walkway between rooms, creating an interesting visual experience as you move from one space to another. Alternatively, if you want more privacy or security in a particular area, then using a door in the archway is also possible. Ultimately, it depends on the individual's preferences and needs for how they want to use their arched doorway.

How do you make a perfect arched doorway?

Creating a perfect arched doorway is an art form that requires precision and skill. If you're handy around the house and know how to use common carpentry tools, this would be the steps in a nutshell. First, you must determine the size of the arch and mark the center of your door frame. From there, use a compass to draw a semi-circle on each side of the center point. Carefully cut out each side of the arch with either a jigsaw or a handsaw. Once both sides are cut out, you can then connect them together using additional pieces of wood. To ensure accuracy, use clamps to hold everything together while you secure it with nails or screws. Finally, fill any gaps with putty and sand them down for a smooth finish.

But of course some timeless classics like farmhouse design will always work with a doorway arch. Whether arched doorways are in or out of style ultimately depends on the individual’s preference and the overall design of their home. But if you want a totally biased opinion, we don't think arched doorways will ever go out of style! 

  How high should an arched doorway be?

When it comes to the height of an arched doorway, it is important to consider both aesthetics and practicality. Generally, the ideal height of an arched doorway will depend on the ceiling height in the room. If possible, it is best to make sure that the arch reaches at least five or six inches above the top of any door frame. This helps to create a sense of greater space, as well as allowing for more light and air flow through a room. However, if this is not possible due to low ceilings, then a shorter arch may be necessary. To determine the best height for your arched doorway, it is important to take into consideration both practicality and beauty, ensuring that you choose a design that suits your home’s style and layout. 

  How do you calculate the arch used in the doorway?

Calculating an arch is a relatively simple process. First, measure the width and height of the opening. Then, divide the height by 2 to determine the radius of the arch. Next, draw a right triangle with one side equal to half of the width and calculate its hypotenuse using Pythagorean theorem. This will give you an approximate arc length for your door. Lastly, measure that distance from each side of the opening and mark it on both sides with a pencil or other marking device before cutting out the arch shape.

How to Drywall an Arch

Learning how to drywall an arch might be easier than you think

Beginners are often apprehensive about the curved surface of drywall. It’s completely understandable. If you really think you’ll have trouble, you can always install the arch yourself and hire someone to do the drywall for you. But before you make your decision, have a look over this handy, step-by-step guide. You may find that learning how to drywall an arch is easier than you think.

The Easy Way To Drywall An Arch

So you've finished framing your arch and now want to embark on the finishing stages, well we're here to help. Follow the instructions below and you'll be ready to paint in no time!

Step 1: Use drywall that is 1/2 inch thick and fasten it over the arch.

Take a sheet (or smaller pieces) of 1/2 inch thick drywall and cover the wall that the arch is on. The drywall will overhang covering the arch, but don't worry we'll fix that in the next step.

Step 1 - Covering the arch with drywall

Step 2: Cut drywall to archway.

Now that you've installed the drywall, it’s time to get your curve back. Here you're going to cut the drywall along the edge of the arch. We recommend using a router with a special bit to cut the drywall to make a clean cut. (Tip: Google rotozip)

Step 2 - Cut along the arch with a router

Step 3: Add more screws along the edge of the curve as needed.

This will secure the drywall to the MDF and give you a cleaner edge. You’ll definitely need to add some, but how many is up to you and your curve. While learning how to drywall an arch, you’ll be able to see whether you need more screws or not. If it looks like there are open spaces or gaps, add another screw.

Step 3 - Add more screws to ensure a strong fit

Step 4: Repeat on the other side of the arch.

Just switch sides and follow steps 1-3 again. When you’re done, both sides of the archway should have drywall and you'll be ready to move on to the bottom of the arch.

Step 4 - Repeat steps 1-3 on the other side

Step 5: Measure and place a double layer of ¼” drywall under the archway.

Ok now that the two faces of the arch have been drywalled, now we can finish it up by adding drywall to the bottom side of the arch. It's best to use 1/4 inch drywall for this step because it offers more flexibility than 1/2 inch drywall. But it also depends on the curve of your arch, if the arch is not too pronounced you might be able to get away with 1/2 inch drywall.

Here’s a tip: Wet the back of the drywall to help it bend to conform to the curve. Before fastening, slowly work it with your fingers gently creating a curve. Be careful not to break the drywall. Don’t worry if you have to start over as it will take a little bit of time to acquire the feel for bending drywall.

Step 5 - Adding drywall to underside of the arch

Step 6: Screw the drywall into place.

Once you've got the right curve to the drywall and it's fitting nicely on the arch, it's time to fasten it to the frame. Since you’re already holding the drywall in place at this point, just use your drill and screw bit to screw it into place.

Step 6 - Screw the drywall to the bottom of the arch

Step 7: Now, you’re ready for tape and mud.

This is the part where it really helps to be meticulous. Apply very thin layers of mud and then sand them down until your surface is smooth. Don’t forget to leave time for each layer to dry in-between. Taping and compounding is a practice in patience, but it will pay off in the end. You could know everything about how to drywall an arch, but if you don’t have patience with this process, you will not get the perfect finish you were looking for.

We recently had the opportunity to work with a team of professionals from Almar Building & Remodeling located in Hanover, MA. Their client wanted to incorporate a dome ceiling in the master bedroom and that's when we teamed up with www.Almarbuilding.com. Take a look:

"When our client came to us with the idea of wanting to install a flat ceiling with a Dome in their Master Bedroom ceiling that was already vaulted 15' we were not sure what was the best way to frame the structure. I had talked with people who had used a 'hanging plaster' system, but were very unhappy with it and as the home settled the plaster cracked. Common Ceiling Types Explained in Plain English

When you start looking into construction and remodeling projects, the industry lingo can be a bit overwhelming. Why does everyone seem to expect that you’re a licensed contractor just because you want to have a hand in designing your home?

But still, any good designer should understand the basics of the elements they’re using. It just makes good sense. So, we’ve taken the liberty of simplifying the definitions a bit. It’s not that you couldn’t understand the industry speak, but why would you even want to try? Without further ado, let’s have a look at some of the most common ceiling types: 

Barrel vault

Of all the ceiling types, this one is actually the simplest. It can be done on a large scale (say, above the entire span of a spacious living room), but the design is still relatively simple. It consists of just one arch that is repeated over and over again. Here is an example of a barrel vault ceiling used to accent a bathroom. They are also popular in media rooms and dining rooms.

Coved ceiling

Unlike the other ceiling types, the cove ceiling often starts where the walls meet the ceiling. It’s often used to soften up the room. As you can see from the example here, the coved ceiling gets rid of the stark angles that are usually found where the wall connects to the ceiling.

Dome ceiling

Of all the ceiling types, the dome is the most pronounced. You can choose a half-circle or a softer curve, but the dome will provide a pop of interest wherever you decide to install it. Domes are usually come with soft lighting inside, called a light ring, but this is an optional feature. In the example below you can see a dome ceiling with a faux finish and a nice chandelier hanging from the center.

Groin vault

Although the dome offers a major change in a small space, the groin vault can offer a big impact over a larger space. The groin vault is among the most complex ceiling types because it is made of intersecting barrel vaults. As you can see from the example, a groin vault can instantly give a space a medieval or Romanesque feel.

Hello Wesley,

I hardly ever write a customer review or rate a product. In fact, if there is such a thing as an "Anti-Social Media" guy, that's probably me. First, rarely am I that impressed with a product or service — and second, I usually don't make the time to answer requests for a customer review. However, in working with you guys, I was just that impressed.

We were in the process of adding a walk-in closet into an attic space and the low attic ceiling height would require an arch door to maximize the area we had to work with. I had no idea an archway/door solution was going to be so hard to find (and so expensive to boot). I looked for a week trying to find a solution when I came across your website. The website was easy to navigate, responsive and had all the answers I was looking for. And since the prices were so reasonable, I didn't worry about it much even if the solution didn't work — so I went ahead and placed my order online.

The next day, I got a voice mail and an email with "concerns" about my order. "Well, here we go", I thought. When I called back, I was amazed at the service and questions. Because of the door specs, my measurements were a bit "unusual" and prompted you to put the order on hold until the issues were clarified. Heck, most places would have just run the job and sent it – no questions asked.

Our conversation led to an even better archway door solution and even easier installation (as the arches were sent in one piece).

We were working on the room Friday when the pieces arrived right on time. The fit was absolutely perfect – zero issues. And my DIY finished cost for the arch doorways will be 90% cheaper than purchasing a full arch door and jamb kit.

I have already recommended your product to two other builders/contractors — and I will not hesitate to do so in the future.

Hey Archway Guys and Gals,

Thanks for everything. Your cyclorama kit is awesome.

Thank for making it easier to build. I choose to not use a frame and simply glued the ribs to the cement floor. Used cement patch to fill the concrete grooves and then used a nail gun into the studs on the wall. There are actually 2 x 45 degree angles in the center of the photos that has been fitted with your kits and then Masonite on your ribs. Lots of joint compound and sanding and then finally lighting placed.

I'm no construction expert but it was not hard to do. I didn't even need to use any kind of saw. Now I have much more space to shoot my videos and stills and I'm not limited to a 9 foot paper roll backdrop :) No more black bars in videos! Yea!!

A Barrel Vault… that’s what they keep money in at the bank, right? Wrong. Find out everything you need to know about this ceiling type here.

The barrel vault may sound like a giant structure that holds money in a bank, but that’s not it. You might find a barrel vault in a high-end bank, or one that was built in an old structure, but it’s not meant for any purpose other than to add aesthetic appeal to a room.

But let’s shift our focus away from financial institutions because they aren’t the only places you’ll find barrel vaults; not by a long shot. You’ll find them in the Vatican and just about any other historic structure. You may even find them in your neighbor’s home (gasp).

Have we sufficiently built suspense? Okay, now I guess we can answer the question…

Barrel Vault Definition

A barrel vault is the simplest form of a vault created from a single continuous archway.  Barrel Vaults are a type of decorative ceiling that are used to soften the edges of a room and, in some cases, make it appear larger. The easiest way for you to imagine a barrel vaulted ceiling is to imagine a giant barrel cut in half lengthwise and mounted on the ceiling. The process of building one of these ceilings is a little more involved than that, but now you get the picture.

When we talk about a continuous archway, what we're referring to is one single curve that is repeated over and over again on the exact same radius throughout the ceiling. These vaults can span the entire length and width of a room, or they can be used more sparingly to highlight one section of the room.

Are Barrel Vault Ceilings New?

Nope. Barrel vaults have been around for almost as long as we have had civilization on this planet. Evidence of these tunnel vaults have been found in Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian architecture, although, it didn't become an architectural staple until Ancient Romans began building large-scale projects. After the fall of the Roman Empire, we saw the popularity of barrel rolls fall significantly. At the time, it only made sense to install a barrel vault in a sprawling estate.

Why the Sudden Comeback?

Throughout history, this ceiling became popular when trends and finances favored large, expensive construction projects. But recent technological advances have made the barrel vault easier and cheaper to produce, which makes it easier for the Jones's to afford and install barrel ceilings in their own homes.

Components of a Barrel Vault

As previously mentioned, a barrel vault consists of one continuous arch, but what determines how a barrel vault is constructed? When designing a barrel vault there are three basic measurements to take into account: Length, Width, and Rise. Below we'll breakdown what each of these means.

Length: The distance from one end of the barrel vault to the other end.

Width: The span of the barrel vault

Rise: The drop of the arch as measured from the apex of the arch to the lowest point it encounters.

How Can I Install a Barrel Vault?

For most people, installing a barrel vault is fairly easy. It’s the barrel production that can be a challenge. That’s why we got into the barrel-making business so many years ago, and it’s also why demand has only increased over time. As more people realize that they can install these stunning ceilings within their budget, more people are making the move to barrel ceilings. To get the process started, you’ll just need to know the three simple measurements we mentioned before.

Length: This is the distance from one end to the other.

Width: This is the span of the barrel vault. Exactly how wide would you like it to be?

Rise: This one seems more complicated than the other two on paper, but it’s actually quite simple. Rise measures the height of your barrel vault. Measure from the apex of the curve to the lowest point of where you want your barrel to go. As you might imagine, this measurement impacts the radius of each curve.

How Easy Is The Barrel Ceiling To Install?

Traditionally constructing a barrel vault built on site would take several hours and require a great deal of plywood and lumber. However, the barrel ceiling kit from Archways and Ceilings Made Easy comes preformed and only takes a few nails to attach into place. It is as easy as hanging a picture frame. The reason a barrel vault ceiling kit is so easy is because you no longer have to cut or figure your dimensions. The prep work is gone! All you have to do is hang the pieces. If you can paint by numbers, then you can install a barrel vault ceiling. It is that easy! We've outlined the installation steps below:

How To Install A Barrel Vault Ceiling - Instructions

Here we provide step by step instructions illustrating how to properly install a barrel vault ceiling from Archways & Ceilings Made Easy. We also have an easy to understand "How to" video!

Step 1: Using traditional framing construction to meet code requirements, frame a brace centered down the length of your barrel vault.

Step 2: Snap a center line to the underside of the center brace. Note: The center line must be centered down the length of the barrel vault within ¼”.

Step 3: Measure and mark down from the bottom of the center brace along each wall and at each end ______ inches (rise). Note: The rise does not include the thickness of the center brace.

Step 4: Snap a horizontal line at the rise mark on each wall down the length of your barrel vault.

Step 5: Starting at one end of your barrel vault, align the pre-cut mitered half of the arch to the rise mark on the stud. Using a nail gun (or screw gun), attach the half to the stud. Tip: if using screws predrill pilot holes.

Step 6: Align the square cut half to the center line of the center brace and nail (screw) in place.

Step 7: Repeat steps 5 and 6 to complete the whole strut.

Step 8: While spacing the barrel vault struts 16” O.C., continue installing the struts down the length of the barrel vault until finished.

Step 9: If necessary and/or according to code requirements, install strongbacks atop the barrel vault struts.

Step 10: If necessary and/or according to code requirements, fire block the barrel vault along the perimeter of the outer struts.

Step 11: That’s it! You are now ready for electric and drywall!

Range Hood Installation Tutorial With Youtuber Flipping Gorgeous

YouTuber Lena from Flipping Gorgeous TV shows us how to install an Arcadian Range Hood

If you've been looking for an amazing tutorial on how to install one of our Range Hoods, then do we have just the thing for you. We recently partnered up with Lena, a self-proclaimed "realtor turned renovator" who is the star of the successful Flipping Gorgeous TV YouTube channel, to show you just how easy installing one of our range hoods can be.

For this range hood installation tutorial she created a 3 part video tutorial which is available on her YouTube channel (of course!). Here we'll give you the play-by-play of how she did it. Watch the entire video series at the end!

DIY RANGE HOOD: PART 1: BUILDING THE FRAME

Step 1: Remove the existing cabinets and the old range hood

This is a necessary step in order to make way for the new range hood. Of course you'd skip this step if you're in new construction or have already demo'd the old range hood.

Step 2: Measure for the placement of your new range hood

In your range hood installation directions you'll receive from us it will show you what you need to do to make sure everything is lined up properly and is being installed in the right place. 

As Lena demonstrates in this video it's a good idea to do a dry run by placing the back panel against the wall to make sure it fits accordingly. You can then trace an outline of the back panel on the wall to make it easier to attach. From here you can make any adjustments you need to make, in Lena's case it was drilling one hole for an electrical cord. Easy peasy!

Step 3: Start assembling the range hood

Now it's time to start putting the puzzle pieces together. The pieces for the range hood will be precisely cut so that they have exact placements and interlock together. 

From there you just need to screw the pieces together. The detailed directions will show you exactly where the screw placements should be. Lena being the experienced contractor she is decided to drill pilot holes to make the process go smoother.

Step 4: Attach the range hood to the wall

The range hood kit is comprised of different sections. Each section is assembled and then installed in a specific order, starting with the top back panel. 

After the top back panel is screwed into the wall, you'd then attach the middle back panel, in this case feeding the electrical cord through the hole you drilled in the previous step.

Once the middle back panel is secured, it's time to assemble the bottom section of the range hood and secure that to the wall. 

These steps are repeated section by section until the entire frame is put together and securely installed to the wall. 

Step 5: Insert the vent and attach electrical

After the range hood frame is fully assembled and attached to the wall, it's time to insert your vent and connect the exhaust duct and electrical source to it. 

The range hood frame is designed around the vent model you provide when you order the kit. This ensures a perfect fit and easy installation. If you're not sure which vent model to use for the style of range hood you like, we're more than happy to help you pick one! 

DIY RANGE HOOD COVER: PART 2: DRYWALL FINISH

Now that you've got the frame assembled and your vent installed and connected, it's time to start with the exterior finish of the range hood. Our first step is going to be adding the drywall to the outside of the range hood frame. This will allow us to add the final finish to the range hood, in this case Lena chose to finish it with plaster. But the possibilities are endless when it comes to finishing, it's up to your imagination! 

Step 1: Screw drywall sheet to flat sides of range hood frame

The best method here is to use pieces of drywall that are slightly bigger than the sections of the frame and then cut around the edges after screwing it to the frame. Since the sides and front are flat this is a pretty easy step.

Step 2: Score drywall for the curved sections of range hood frame

Depending on which style of range hood you choose, it may have rounded or curved components. For example, Lena is working with Arcadian Range Hood which features a downward sloping front. Other range hoods like the Modern Range Hood or Craftsman Range Hood do not have any curved sides, everything is flat.

Rounded sections get drywall just like the other sections, but the application method is a little different. In order to manipulate the drywall to fit a curved surface it might be necessary to score the back of it so that it bends but does not break.

After you've scored the drywall you can now screw it to the frame just like you did with the flat pieces. 

If you chose corbels for your range hood, the scoring method might be a little different because of the sharper curves. In this case, Lena scored the front and the back of the drywall in order for it to be pliable enough to wrap the underside of the corbels.

Step 3: Trim excess drywall at the seams and edges 

Using an X-Acto knife or box cutter trim off any excess drywall where two pieces of drywall meet. This allows for the drywall to be flush with each other at the seams and gives it a cleaner and finished look. This is also important for the next step so your joint compound has a cleaner surface to stick to. 

Step 4: Taping and joint compound application

Now that the frame has been covered in drywall it's time to seal everything up and get it prepared for the final finishing phase. For this step we recommend using joint compound, as it's better suited for drywall. 

You'll want to apply joint compound to the seams (where the drywall pieces meet) as well as to fill in any screw holes. You can apply tape to the seams first if you want, but it's totally up to you.

If you have corbels like Lena does for this range hood, it's a good idea to tape the gaps on the front of the drywall that were caused by the scoring. After that's all been taped you'd then apply joint compound on top to seal everything up.

Step 5: Apply corner beads if necessary

Depending on how the taping and joint compound turned out you may want to add corner beads to the edges for a smoother seam. Lena picked up some rounded corner beads at Home Depot and easily applied them with some spray adhesive.

After your corner beads are affixed you'll want to go over them with a layer of joint compound in order to give it a smooth finish. At this point your range hood frame should be sealed up with tape and joint compound.

Step 6: Sand and prime the range hood frame

After you've finished with the joint compound it's time to sand and paint. For this you don't need an expensive electrical sander, something like sanding sponge should do the trick. You'll want to to go over the areas where you have joint compound so they're smooth and blend into the drywall.

Once you're done sanding you're probably going to want to use some primer, but that may be dependent on your final finishing material. Lena is going to be using venetian plaster and for this material it's a good idea to use some primer. If you're finishing with something like stone, you probably don't need to prime. 

DIY RANGE HOOD: PART 3: APPLYING VENETIAN PLASTER

Now that the range hood is sanded and primed you're about to start the home stretch of the finishing process. At this point the next steps might differ depending on how you plan to finish the range hood. Lena is going to be using venetian plaster, but these steps would be applicable for other similar finishes. If you're going to be finishing the range hood in another material (like stone for example) this last phase would be quite different.

Step 1: Use painter's tape to protect other surfaces

Like with any sort of painting project you'll want to tape off the surface areas you want to protect. Here Lena adds painter's tape to the walls around the edges of the range hood frame. Depending on how your range hood is installed you may also need to tape off the ceiling like she did.

Step 2: Apply a skim coat

When working with a material like venetian plaster it's a great idea to add an initial coat to help the final coat adhere better, this is called a skim coat.

Using a trowel, apply the plaster to cover the entire frame using alternating motions for the desired look and consistency. For smaller areas it's probably easier to use a putty knife instead of a large trowel, applying the plaster like you would spackle. 

Step 3: Apply the texture coat

After the skim coat has dried (about an hour or so) you can now apply the texture coat, or the finishing coat. This will be the last coat you apply and will be in whatever style you decided on. Lena is going for a particular look so she used a special technique called "skipping" in order to achieve her desired texture.

Step 4: Smooth out the texture if needed

After letting the finishing coat dry overnight, Lena wanted to smooth out the plaster some because it was still a little rough to the touch. For this she used a round 200 grit sanding pad to lightly go over the surface buffing out the rough spots. This kept the look she was going for but gave her a smoother surface.

if you're going to be buffing our plaster it's advisable to wear a mask so you don't breath in any of the dust particles.

Step 5: Apply any finishing accessories (optional)

Depending on the look you're going for, at this point your range hood might be completely finished. And if so, then congratulations!

But for some people you may want to add a little flair to the range hood, and this is the time to do it. Lena toys around with adding some wood elements to the front of range hood, but holds off until some other projects are finished to make sure it all works together. 

Some other range hood finishing options could include a stripe of paint for a pop of color, perhaps some mosaic tile, or even some metal to dress up your range hood. It's totally up to you!

Range Hood Installation Tutorial - Wrapping Up

In the world of architecture and interior design, many choices are available for the style of a ceiling. You’re no longer stuck with a flat ceiling that does nothing to enhance a room.

With so many options available, it can be difficult to know all of them and the differences between some styles. For example, vaulted vs cathedral ceilings.

In this article, we outline their similarities and differences, the advantages of both, and if a vaulted or cathedral ceiling is right for you.

What Is A Cathedral Ceiling?

Cathedral ceilings are tall, central, and symmetrical. These types of vaulted ceilings originated in churches and cathedrals, hence the name.

In a cathedral ceiling, parallel sides taper towards the center, following the shape of the roof. This creates a peaked ridge down the center of the room.

Construction costs of unique ceiling types can sometimes be quite high. But unlike medieval times, the construction of a cathedral ceiling is now far easier with prefabricated roof trusses. Therefore, it is now easier than ever to implement this style into a modern home.

Cathedral Ceiling Advantages

A cathedral ceiling maximizes the vertical space in a room in a way that conventional flat ceilings cannot. The addition of a cathedral ceiling will instantly elevate the look of your home.

Higher ceilings such as this are much more space-efficient than a flat ceiling and certainly more interesting. It will accommodate larger furnishings and more elaborate light fixtures that would look out of place with a lower, flat ceiling.

Cathedral Ceiling Disadvantages

Because of the increased vertical space, it will be more difficult to install new light fixtures, clean blades of ceiling fans, or change lightbulbs.

And your energy bill could increase slightly, as warm air may get trapped in the added vertical volume. This can be an issue with a cathedral or vaulted ceiling.

What Is A Vaulted Ceiling?

A vaulted ceiling consists of a self-supporting arch between the walls and roof. It does not necessarily follow the pitch of the roof. Therefore it can have uneven sides, depending on the style of the vaulted ceiling.

While a cathedral ceiling matches the roof pitch, a vaulted ceiling sits below it.

Vaulted Ceiling Advantages

Vaulted ceilings add a touch of drama, and there are many different styles to choose from. They can also free up space for larger windows, which will introduce more natural light into dark rooms.

With the natural light that more space for windows or a skylight provides, is increased warmth from the sun. Any vaulted ceiling style will make your home more appealing to prospective buyers, too.

Vaulted Ceiling Disadvantages

As with cathedral ceilings, the downsides can include difficulty changing lightbulbs in your lights and that you may require more heating in winter as the warm air in your home rises higher.

The Difference Between Vaulted And Cathedral Ceilings 

Cathedral and vaulted ceilings are similar styles. Both vaulted and cathedral ceilings are types of arched ceilings, featuring sloping sides that peak at the roof.

But while all cathedral ceilings are vaulted ceilings, not all vaulted ceilings are cathedral ceilings. The main difference between a vaulted or cathedral ceiling is mostly due to their sloping and upper framework.

A cathedral ceiling, with its straight sides following the roof’s pitch, creates more additional space than other vaulted styles. It is a high ceiling design with two equal sloping sides that slant upwards towards a point at the top.

A vaulted ceiling does not have to follow the shape of the roof. Vaulted ceilings can be symmetrical, or asymmetrical and can feature a number of sides coming together at a central point. There are several different types of vaulted ceilings so it all depends on the style.

Are Vaulted Ceilings Energy-Efficient?

A common question asked about cathedral and vaulted ceilings is whether they are energy efficient or not. Heat rises, so warm air will move up to the high spaces in the ceiling. If there is a lack of good circulation, you will need more heating to keep your rooms warm.

This is usually the case in older homes though with poor ventilation, insulation, and ducting. With good insulation and a proper ventilation system, you shouldn’t see an increase in your heating bill. 

Ideas For Cathedral Ceilings

Cathedral ceilings can be used to create dramatic spaces, a glamorous vibe, or even a woodsy cabin look. It all depends on the surrounding décor of your living spaces. High ceilings like this provide a lot of vertical extra space and will better suit large rooms or open-plan spaces.

Dining Hall Glamor Cathedral Ceiling

A big dining hall in a bed and breakfast lodge or inn will immediately be transformed with a cathedral ceiling. But this works equally well for large dining rooms or master bedrooms in your home.

For an extra touch of glamor, add a chandelier. A chandelier and a cathedral ceiling are a style match made in heaven.

Modern Art Drama Cathedral Ceiling

A spacious open-plan design apartment will be given a serious edge with a cathedral ceiling. This will work best if the ceiling is high to begin with.

Contrast the symmetrical angles of the cathedral ceiling sides with abstract art at key positions throughout the living space.

Rustic Barn-Style Kitchen Cathedral Ceiling 

Do you have a large kitchen with a high ceiling? Create a rustic look with a cathedral ceiling with exposed beams and lots of pottery and wooden furniture.

Install skylights to increase the natural light, as lots of paneling could make the space seem a bit darker. Add some café curtains at the lower windows for a quaint cottagey look.

Keep It Clean And White

For a bright and spacious look, you can paint a cathedral ceiling and its exposed beams white. This is great if you have a smaller space and an open plan home design. It makes everything look brighter and more spacious.

A white wood-paneled cathedral ceiling is also a great way to achieve a chic, modern look that still feels warm and inviting.

Create A Grand Entrance Hall With A Barrel Vaulted Ceiling

Made popular in Roman architecture, a barrel vault will give an entire room a new look and feel, but it is often preferred for entrance halls and corridors. This ceiling style may be the best choice for a minimalist décor theme.

The barrel vault is a semi-cylindrical vaulted ceiling. Imagine what a huge barrel cut in half lengthwise and mounted from the roof would look like. That is what barrel-vaulted ceilings look like. A barrel-vaulted ceiling has one uniform arch and is also sometimes called a wagon vault or tunnel vault.

A Vintage Flair With Groin Vaults

A modern home can be given a vintage air with a groin or cross-vaulted ceiling. But, it will best be complemented by warm colors, antique wood furniture, and traditional paintings or sculptures.

A groin-vaulted ceiling is sometimes known as a double barrel vault or cross vault. This design is achieved through the intersection at right angles of two barrels. Sometimes, the arches of groin vaulted ceilings are pointed.

As with the barrel vault, a groin vault is equally at home in a corridor or grand entranceway. When you have a particularly wide entrance hall, entertainment area, or corridor, this style will make the most of that space.

Elevate The Living Room Or Entertainment Area With A Cloister Vault

Similar to a groin vault, a cloister vaulted ceiling is formed with barrel vaults. It is sometimes referred to as a pavilion vault. A cloister vault ceiling features four concave surfaces arching toward the center from a constant springing point along the walls.

When you step out of the hustle and bustle of New York City, into the breathtaking halls of Grand Central Station, you can feel like you’re walking into another world.

Behind the façade of elegant arches and stylish spaces is the history of the rail yards and how this station came to be. The Grand Central Terminal has become something of a monument to New Yorkers with its beautiful architectural features.

Grand Central Terminal History

The Grand Central Terminal came into fruition out of necessity. New Yorkers needed a central terminal to connect the Hudson River Railroad, the New York and Harlem Railroad, and the New York and New Haven Railroad.

The Vanderbilt family commissioned this new station and called it the Grand Central Depot. The project was completed in 1871 at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. However, due to frequent accidents involving pedestrians, Vanderbilt came up with the Fourth Avenue Improvement Project the following year. This project allowed trains coming from the north to descend into the Park Avenue Tunnel and move underground into the depot instead of on street level.

With traffic increasing very quickly, the Grand Central Depot reached capacity in the 1890s. As such, the building was reconstructed and renamed as Grand Central Station.

After an unfortunate accident in 1902, causing the death of 15 people, it was clear some changes had to be made. The entire building was torn down and the current Grand Central Terminal was built by the New York Central Railroad.

Two firms were selected for the project: Reed and Stem worked on the overall design of the terminal and Warren and Wetmore were responsible for the building’s Beaux-Arts exterior.

In 1913, the new Grand Central Station was revealed to the public, hosting the numerous architectural wonders that we can see today. Its ceilings stretched to the skies and it featured impressive rooms such as the Vanderbilt Hall.

In 1968, New York Central merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad, becoming Penn Central Railroad. As railroad traffic declined in the coming years, an office building replaced Penn Station. This was a great architectural loss and spurred the New York City Landmarks Preservation Committee to give Grand Central Station landmark status.

Restoration And Improvements

After achieving landmark status, a massive restoration needed to occur. The station was modified and cleaned. This restoration included creating a retail space, scrubbing away blackout paint from World War II, and installing a marble staircase on the west side to match the one on the east. In addition, the ceilings were cleaned - revealing the beautiful starry mural that lay underneath.

Grand Central now features food halls with restaurants, fast food outlets, and fresh food markets among other vendors. There is also the Metro-North lost-and-found bureau and even an annex of the New York Transit Museum.

Above and beyond the history, the thing that really sets Grand Central Station apart is its architecture. It took a concept of practicality and made it artistic with its swooping arches and detailed murals. 

The Main Concourse

Stepping into the Main Concourse will leave just about anyone and everyone speechless. The enormous barrel vault and igloo vault ceiling makes it feel as though the building soars into the heavens - especially with the celestial mural painted across it. This is probably the most famous ceiling today. But, creating these heavens was no easy feat. It took dozens of people and years to build the Grand Central Terminal ceilings.

Even though the terminal opened in 1913, it was only in 1930 that the magnificent arched ceiling was revealed to the New York public. It wasn’t long before commuters realized the design was the wrong way round. East was West and West was East. This sparked an age-old debate that adds to the character of this new terminal about whether it was the secret intention of the artist.

The Oyster Bar Ceiling

An absolute design wonder, the Oyster Bar’s arched ceiling still draws international architectural wonder. Designed and built by Guastavino and his son, the self-supporting igloo arches are enough to marvel at. But, to top it off, Guastavino laid the arches with fireproof tiles that would save grand central 96 years later.

This innovative concept, developed in 1901 saved the Oyster Bar from total collapse in 1997. As a fire-ravaged through the restaurant burning anything, the tiles protected the internal arched structure, and consequently the rest of the grand central terminal.

The Graybar Passage Mural

Set between the Grand Central Market and Graybar Building, is the Graybar Passage which features a ceiling mural.

Edward Trumbull, a well-known artist in his time, painted this mural on one of the Passage’s groin-vaulted ceilings. Although the colors have now faded to a sweet caramel, this mural once hosted extravagant colors and details.

As you enter the Graybar Passage from the Grand Central Terminal, you can see cumulus clouds on the first two vaults. The idea was to make the ceilings appear higher. The third vaulted ceiling displays Trumbull’s work, which displays various technologies that influence the world on each of the four sides. If you look closely, you can spot electric trains, skyscrapers, airplanes, and zeppelins.

Grand Central Station Arches

The ceilings aren’t the only interesting architectural features you can find in Grand Central. There are many amazing arches throughout the building that create flow and light.

Arched Windows

As you step into the Main Concourse of Grand Central Station, massive half-circle arched windows greet you. As these massive windows allow New York City to peer in on the hurry of commuters, it draws your eyes up to the beautiful barrel-vaulted ceiling. A cohesive flow of architecture that makes you feel small in its grandeur. 

And, if you allow your eyes to wander further up you will find window arches, lining the celestial mural. These windows allow the natural light of New York City to fill in the Main Concourse, opening up the space so much more.

Dual Radius Arches

What makes Grand Central Station such a historical and architectural wonder is its tasteful continuous use of arches. While most would focus on specific arched points, the architects of Grand Central Station did not hold back. As commuters travel through the concourse to catch their trains, passageways lined with dual radius arches lead the way. This fine attention to detail is what sets Grand Central Station arches apart from any other train station.

Some have even remarked that if you are not focused, you could lose track of time and miss your train. Archways lead to more archways, with beautiful arched windows. You can easily get caught in a world of wonder as you pass through the Grand Central arches.

The architects of Grand Central Station were able to transform the elliptical arch from practical reinforcement to elegant walkways. As you leave the Oyster Bar, these arches balloon above your head, leading you through to Grand Central’s terminals. The Whispering Gallery

Perhaps one of, if not the, most famous of the Grand Central’s elegant centerpieces is the Whispering Gallery. This arch was popularized by tourists, once they realized that, through the cacophony of the New York Railroad, the quietest of whispering could be heard across the room.

This effect, created by elliptical arches, is not uncommon. In fact, you find these corners of quiet amplification all around the world in England, India, even Utah. But perhaps, the thing that makes the Whispering Gallery so popular is the fact that you are able to hear a whisper amongst so much noise in the city that never sleeps.

Perhaps you’re lucky enough to have an underground wine cellar. Or a spare room that you can convert into a wine room. Either way, it helps to have a few useful tips and ideas to get you started.

So, we’ve put together this guide to wine cellar design ideas for your home. From the basics of ensuring optimal conditions for wine storage to interior design tips to create the cellar of your dreams, this guide has it all.

Important Considerations When Designing A Wine Cellar

Before you can consider the décor of your wine room, here are some important considerations when designing a wine cellar to ensure that you meet the optimal conditions for wine storage.

Framing Your Wine Cellar

When choosing the framing for your wine cellar walls, it’s best to use 2x6 framing lumber. This will improve the energy efficiency because this lumber depth means you can install thicker insulation with a higher heat flow resistance.

Insulation and Vapor Barrier

You have to build an enclosure around the whole room to control the humidity in your wine cellar. This consists of insulation material and a vapor barrier.

When using conventional insulation, a minimum of 4mm plastic is generally recommended, with the seams overlapped and taped. The vapor barrier must be installed on the outside of the cellar insulation material.

A simpler option for insulating your wine room is closed-cell (polyurethane) foam. This offers insulation as well as a vapor barrier for your cellar. As a result, you won’t need to install plastic sheeting over the insulation material.

Electrical Outlets And Light Fixtures

Electrical outlets, switches, and light fixtures should be contained in sealed plastic boxes. It’s also important to caulk all wiring penetrations to prevent outside air from entering your wine cellar.

Any penetration of the vapor barrier must be completely sealed and airtight!

Doors And Windows

A wine cellar door should always be fully insulated and of commercial exterior-grade quality. If you want glass doors to show off your impressive wine display, be sure to use the right glass. It should be insulated, double-paned, and completely airtight to prevent fogging. Use UV filtering glass.

The door should have a gasket around the frame to seal it airtight, and a floor sweep at the bottom to seal the gap between the door and the floor.

All windows should be of the insulated, double-wall type. The space between the window frame and the wall studs should be tightly packed with insulation and covered with the vapor barrier.

This may not be an issue in a basement wine cellar. But, a room in your house will likely have more sunlight streaming in. Direct sunlight and UV rays are not friends to your wines. So, you want to minimize the amount of light that enters your wine room.

Ideal Lighting For Wine Cellars

Lighting adds ambiance to wine cellars, but also heat, which can be an issue. So, use low-voltage LED bulbs for lighting or use light fixtures that have transformers located outside of your wine cellar.

Avoid installing recessed lights that penetrate into the insulation and vapor barrier.

Wine Racks And Shelving

Tables or shelves where cases of wine bottles can be placed to be opened are very useful.  You may also like to have a wine tasting area in your wine room. But take care that you do not block the supply or return air registers with wine cabinets, shelving, and wine racks. The air needs to circulate freely.

Store your wine bottles horizontally, at a 45º angle with the cork facing downwards, or somewhere in between. Because this keeps the wine in constant contact with the cork, no air will get into the bottle.

Ideal Temperature And Humidity For Storing Your Wine Collection

It’s very important to store your wine in a controlled environment. Wine ages four times faster at room temperature, so you want to keep the temperature in your cellar cool.

Much depends on the age of the wines and how long you intend to store the wine. But, the ideal temperature for your wine is 55-59 °F (12-15 °C).

A bit of humidity will keep the corks moist and prevent them from cracking. Keep the humidity between 55-75% if possible.

Constructing religiously devoted places is a complex practice. While century-old traditions play a fundamental part, innovation and sustainability are equally important.

Although the luxury and sensory overload in churches of earlier eras has given way to minimalism, architects have found a way to maintain a sense of spirituality, manifestation, and fascination in modern structures.

At Archways and Ceilings, we have provided products for a number of church construction projects to help create the staple features of churches. These include arches, dome ceilings, and groin vault ceilings.

All of these features can be found in churches dating back to ancient times. However, for modern churches, they all take on a much more simplified form. And you can see this in the designs of the three churches we’ll be talking about later on in this blog post.

Church Architecture: Modern Ceilings and Arches

Present-day styles incorporate ceiling domes and arches through simple and clean lines. These replace the richly ornamental detail of the traditional fresco-painted ceilings.

Church vaulted ceilings

In architectural terms, a vault is an arch that extends over an open area.

Church vaulted ceilings draw the attention upwards, creating a sense of volume and openness. Such an atmosphere attracts one into its magnificence and beauty.

Groin vaults are created by intersecting two barrel vaults at right angles. It has been a very common church feature since the Middle Ages as the design distributes weight well so that there is less need for big support strictures. Thus, it’s the perfect ceiling for churches, which need a lot of open space for seating.

Light is also beautifully reflected off a groin-vaulted ceiling, adding depth and movement to a space.

Archways for churches

While modern architecture uses concrete and steel as support structures, the arch is still widely used for shaping openings and creating flow within a space.

The curved lines of an arch soften and add depth to a space. Archways add elegance to the area and play with light and shade, which creates interest.

Because of the way arches transfer weight, they can carry an immense load and span large openings. As such, they are perfect for creating large open spaces in churches.

Prefabricated kits make installing dome ceilings much easier than it used to be! Domes can be formed in almost any configuration imaginable, including elliptical shapes, bell-shaped curves, and structures with distinct spines.

When it comes to church architecture, domes carry a lot of significance and meaning. For example, a dome over a square base is symbolic. The circle represents perfection, eternity, and the vault of heaven. The square represents the earth. The St. Sava Church in Allen Texas clearly reflects this design.

Over time, domes became the direction for prayer and focal points for decoration.

Featured Church Projects Using Domes, Arches, and Groin Vaults

St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church

This Greek Orthodox Church is typical of  Byzantine architecture with hallmark soaring spaces and sumptuous decoration.

All in all, the 10,000 square foot church highlights over 20 different specialty features containing arches, domes, and groin vaults.

Arches line the walkways, inviting light into the passages. Multi-layered arches lead off the aisle into the different church areas. This gives a feel of continuity and flow throughout the structure.

Numerous dome ceilings create texture and depth, accentuating the architectural structure’s style. The massive dome over the altar area features multiple arched windows that project light onto the focal point of the church.

The St. John The Baptist Greek Orthodox Church also features groin vaults along the passageways. While the paint color and the clean lines create a modern, timeless design, ornate gold chandeliers hang from the central points of the groin vaults. These bring a more ornate look to the church and create a spectacular contrast of modern and traditional styles.

St. Sava Church

The construction of St. Sava Church in Allen, Texas, was completed in 2019. The church features several archways and one magnificent dome ceiling.

This church is an excellent example of modern church architecture. It is simple, with clean lines and white walls but features some traditional church styles. For example, while the exterior is a fresh white, you can find arched windows with stone borders, reminiscent of old churches.

Five arches frame the entrance of the church - two smaller ones on each side of a large central arch. This creates a simple, yet impactful entryway leading people into the church.

The interior of the church is very open with large arches supporting the main structure. These arches lead the eye to the impressive central dome, making it the hero of the space.

The dome sits on an octagonal structure over a square base. The octagonal walls supporting the dome each feature an arched window that helps bring more light into the church.

On the sides of the dome inside the building are groin vault ceilings with simple, modern pendant lights hanging from the central points. These ceilings lead the eye upward and help add to the airy, open feel of the space.

St. John of Damascus

The St. John of Damascus Church in Tyler, Texas, is a simple, yet impressive modern structure. The exterior features multiple arched windows as well as nine arches framing the entrance. Similar to the St. Sava church, the entrance design consists of multiple smaller arches on either side of one larger central arch.

Inside, there are many arches within arches that create flow and continuity throughout the space. They are positioned symmetrically around the altar area - above which sits the dome of the church.

This dome also sits on an octagonal structure with long arched windows. This helps light to stream in and illuminate the altar.
