hello isat nation i bring an analysis of symbols in isat: the bright flower

[woe, spoilers be upon ye!]

So, the bright flower visually resembles a pansy. Which feels innocuous until you realize. Pansies are symbols of remembrance. Because it sounds a lot like the French pansées, meaning thoughts. And in Old English, it was referred to as ‘heartease’ because it was thought that carrying one around would remind the person that they were loved, truly and wholeheartedly, by the one who gave it to them.

Now. I want you to let that sit for a sec.

Siffrin gives every party member a flower. It’s a gift, a way of showing that he cares about them. That he loves them. Isabeau says that he’ll treasure it forever.

Bonnie asks why, and then looks at it sadly.

Mirabelle says that she’ll press it in a book to keep it forever.

Odile says that it’s proof.

Siffrin doesn't know what it's proof of, but... of course, it's proof that he loves them. And more than that- that he won't forget them. Even if they forget him. Even if this all meant more to him than it did to them.

Then there's the people outside the party.

Euphrasie can't accept it. She is stuck, like Siffrin. She won't remember. Can't remember.

The King takes it. Instead of asking if Siffrin remembers like he usually does at the start of the battle, he asks if they will remember him. No matter what you say, the battle still happens. But if you say no, the King laughs, and says that he'll remember Siffrin after they're defeated.

The King knows, then, what it symbolizes. Even if Siffrin doesn't.

When you try to give the flower to Loop, they refuse it. They refuse it, again and again, turning it towards other members of the party, to those more deserving of it.

And when they finally take it...they act like nothing happened. But they took it. Quite literally accepted a reminder of love the only person who can care about them.

Do with that information what you will, but...

If you take the flower in Act 5, you can pluck it. If you keep it until after the King, siffrin will remark that it's still there.

If you look at it during act 6, however, you get this.

(You still have the flower.)

(...)

(You guess it's yours, now!)

It's yours now. You don't give it to any of the party members.

It's a reminder of love. Not for the party- they know, now, far better than they ever could have before. No, it's for Siffrin themself.

A way to remember that you are loved.

isat thoughts: stupid rotten adults isn't talked about enough

y'all can we talk for a minute about stupid rotten adults event because dear god i have thoughts

it's honestly one of the more tragic party interactions in my opinion, purely because in this case... siffrin was trying to do the right thing, or at least what they thought was right. they tried to use touch to comfort them, something that they had heard would help, and had it rebuked. Which isn't bonnie's fault, really. they're a kid going through something that a kid should never have to go through. we don't acknowledge enough how fucked up it is for bonnie to be with the party on their journey, even if it leads to them bonding with the group. so it's not surprising that it could come out like this at an age when kids may not have the words or emotional intelligence to express how they're feeling (lord knows some adults never learn either)

but then.

they hit you with this:

and i remember just full stop going "holy fuck bonnie" when this happened. because holy shit, in the context of everything that siffirn is going through, especially if you already had the dagger interaction... they have. they have done that. over and over again, they've died. This isn't directed at isabeau, who was the one to bring it up in the first place, or mirabelle and odile who answer, it's directed to Siffrin, who lost their eye trying to save them, and who could have died for bonnie but didn't. Bonnie doesn't want to lose any of them, but they lash out because of the stress, and direct it at the person who they hold guilt over.

But from a Siffrin POV... it's similar to the time travel joke with isa. it's just another reminder of the ways in which they've failed, and another nail in the coffin of their misgivings regarding what the party thinks about them. All of the things bonnie says here- that siffrin should die, that nobody cares what happens to them, that they are hated- these are all things echoed in act 5 by siffrin.

so i just have to wonder... how much of this conversation stuck with Siffrin? they can resolve it by completing the quest and reassuring bonnie that nothing will happen, if you've done the king quest then you know... something already has happened. And maybe in a way siffrin sees bonnie's anger towards them as a sort of confirmation that it was their fault, and that Bonnie trusted them to keep them all safe, and he failed.

isat thoughts: loop in act 6

[LITERALLY THE MOST SPOILER OF SPOILERS FOR ACT 6 AND TWOHATS DO NOTTTT CONTINUE IF YOU DON'T WANT THIS I MEAN IT]

i have many thoughts about how loop reacts to the end of act 5.

i once got into a discussion with a mutual who was talking abt how twohats felt pretty sudden and that loops reaction was super extreme. but. to play devil's advocate. let me paint you a picture.

Loop didn't know why they got stuck, prior to the end of act 5. how could they? they toiled trying to find an answer and in the end they just couldn't anymore. they gave up, they essentially destroyed their past reality, and they gave up the hope of ever finding a reason as to why they were there. they just wanted out.

but then they got stuck again. and they were forced to think about the why, again, so that they could help siffrin. which was fine, at first. because even though they were stuck, the burden of fighting and going through the loops wasn't laid on them. they could play a passive role. they could forget. or at least try to. and it was going well. until it wasn't.

there was evidence, sure, that it was their own wish. loop brings it up multiple times to siffrin throughout to try and challenge their delusions. but they could never be sure. not until the end.

so now, they're confronted with several inescapable facts.

One: they were stuck in the loops "because of a stupid blinding wish you made". It was their wish that trapped them and their party in an eternal torment nexus. It was their fault, and they never knew it.

Two: the entire time, this answer has been sitting in front of them. such a small moment, such a simple solution. tell them. that's all they had to do. realistically, that is easier said than done, yes. there's not even a guarantee that loop would have told them even if they knew the answer during their loops. but this brings us to;

Three: they just watched an alternate version of themself get everything that they could have had. And to bring it back to point Two, the solution was there the whole time. they just didn't know it. or didn't want to see it. but now they know, and they can do nothing about it. because they already gave up. beacuse;

Four: they gave up their entire reality, themself, their family, and... it was entirely avoidable. in the aftermath of their copy's victory, they are confronted with the fact that they could have had this. this could have been theirs. it was within their grasp. In this moment, it doesn't matter that their House was different, that they never had the head housemaiden to point them in the right direction, that they were alone without a guide to help them. What does matter is that they made a choice that they can't take back, and it cost them everything.

Now, they don't even have the comfort of their copy. they have their family. Loop's family. the one they could have had, if they had just held on a little longer, if they had just told them, if they had the universe on their side.

But they didn't. And now they're alone.

So, really, if anything, I see twohats only partially as envy. the other half is pure, unbridled self-loathing, turned back upon- well, another version of themself. Partially an attempt to get what they could never have, yes, but also a form of self-sabatoge, because what else do they have to lose?

isat thoughts: siffrin vs. act 5 "friend quest" ptsd

this is mainly referring to mirabelle and odile's reactions to siffrin's actions during act 5. don't get me wrong. what siffrin said to them is. horrible. and absolutely warranted them being upset at him. do NOT misconstrue this as me thinking that siffrin was innocent in this case because they Very Much Were Not.

BUT they were also in the middle of a very extreme mental health crisis and-

now listen. listen to me very closely, com'ere.

yall can't tell me that this does not have a lasting impact on how siffrin deals with the party in postcanon. you can't. especially not after the epilogue convo between mirabelle and siffrin, where siffirn outright states that they'd let mirabelle scream at them when she finally decides to be angry at them. and mirabelle is justifiably upset at siffrin for thinking that she'd automatically resort to that, but?????????

just imagine if you will. Mirabelle making a move to touch Siffrin's face like she does in SASASAAP. and siffrin flinches. not like they usually do, where they're startled- this is a genuine moment of fear, like in Memory of Confession.

And Mirabelle just. stares. and Siffrin immediately starts apologizing and making excuses, but he can see it slowly dawning on her the reason why he moved... and she feels awful. Because how could she have known? in that moment, she believed that she was severing her ties with Siffrin, that she was retaliating against a person who had never truly been there for her, and was just toying with her feelings. But that wasn't true. And yes, she apologized, and yes, they're back to being friends, and yes, Siffrin loves them, but that doesn't negate the fact that it happened, and sometimes you can't shake things like that off, even when you know logically that the other person didn't mean it like that.

Ough. Siffrin would feel guilty and probably play it off as justified on Mirabelle's part because yeah! He said something horrible! He deserved that! Meanwhile Mirabelle feels guilty because not only did she hurt her friend during a point at which they needed her most, but she also is still hurting them, even in ways she can't control or make up for?
