positioning/contextual statement_part 1
In this photo book, "Bravado, vulnerability and the Spaces in Between", my aim was to explore these themes as they relate to my own experiences personally and how i see them socially from a position of self-reflection and introspection. I'd like the work to engage with the viewer in a way to have them reconsider their initial reactions and reflect on them, "I feel this way towards this photo because", and what does that say about their relationship with these themes as they engage with them personally?
Vulnerability: A Space for Reflection
I wanted to explore different sides of what one could perceive as vulnerability. Deliberate, nuanced, confronting, yet still holding on to their often uncomfortable/distant, internally rooted perspective. When covering ideas of vulnerability, I want people to reflect on their biases and notions of what vulnerability could look like for men, the raw, covered, suppressed and even plain sight that vulnerability can take shape. Getting people to reflect on what they think masculine vulnerability looks like and why something is or isn't worthy of such a title, as in some instances, it can even be both, or perceived as one yet felt as the other. As it isn't often uncommon to hold the idea of it being something borderline tabu or uncomfortable or as seen as weakness or instability, if only subconsciously as we form opinions and perspectives that drive our relationships and understandings of our self and how we perceive others.
Bravado: The Idealized Self
Bravado is interesting with its intersection and relation to ego, self-view and its connection to how others see us and how we see ourselves. This often dichotomous relationship is something I find interesting, as I see it as a blurred line that can never really be made clear, which makes it interesting in itself, a space to explore. As the "self" we all have and the "you" we each and all see, each has it's own. It's truly the Ying to the Vulnerabilities Yang as it is the us that we allow, and have out for others to consume as we have made it, as we feel comfortable; it's in this stability that grounds us in our self and the worth that we feel that gives us the courage to be, and how this each plays out in us all, unlike vulnerability it's loud yet much like it, it's very personal, to question or confront one's comfort is no more of an offense to confront there vulnerability, as it's our stake in the earth grounding us in our beliefs and interpretations of our outer self and how we see our selves in relation to the ones around us.

to have self is to be taken by self on its journey, it will be hard, you will cry, but to do without, is one without self

(very)rough notes on my focus for final and in my photo/art practice in general
I love to work with the feelings of time, nostalgia, hope, reflection, tranquillity through acceptance and most importantly, the relationship with oneself, and how we relate and understand, understanding self, how much do we question this idea, how much do we know we can control this? verly much a dive into Introspective philosophy and i wish to explore ways in which art can induce this form of thinking.
I'm also interested in the concept of people coming to their own conclusions on the work and how it makes them self-reflect, and then after they have come to their own conclusions on any given image, then to read my own interpretation of what I see in an image for the viewer to then reflect on. How do they themselves respond in reflection to my own, and how that in itself makes people think self-reflectively
The photo series will be a made up of 2 main juxtaposing vibes, roughly translating to Vulnerability and Bravado, with a focus on a reflective relationship between them in regards to self with a focus on how masculinity and how personal development through that of social and environmental exposure play a role in developing self but also how the self that self reflects on this then responds to this.
Ideas im wishing to explore..
On the side of vulnerability..
(at a meta level)
Im interested in exploring the how, the why and the what of the development of confidence and intrigue to pursue the exploration of vulnerability of oneself and how this manifests through expression.
It's in this being self-critical of exploration and reflecting on what this means for me and what this means for you. How do u feel about the exploration of the vulnerability of self, as u see yourself now, and why?
(but mainly at a more direct level)
Connection with oneself and how the self develops as one ages based on what we choose as how what we choose develops us as people and how does what we choose reflect who we are.
Experience and expression of wisdom through time, and how this personal expression and impression reflects the understanding of self and how the relationship of wisdom and self-acceptance and criticality play together
i allso love how we all get this similar feeling yet our relationship with this feeling what it reminds us of and what it means to us in the moment as we reflect, is very personal and individual
How does the way we have been raised affect the way we respond to our vulnerability, but also to our willingness to acknowledge it, and how does this play out? How does our being critical vs dismissive of it say about us?
On thee side of Bravado…
How we express our ideal self, what this looks like to us, why this is important to us, and what the way we express it says about us and our upbringing and what does it say about us.
…… more to be added …. in development…
side notes for final..:
Look for photo book that aligns with my idea
Think about how u wanna layout the book, size of image extra stuff, where to put text ect..
Talk about methods used to apply to get the vibe that I want
(Focus on the pacing and ease of understanding of the explanation)
