One of the things that is interesting about Europe is that obviously the importance of various towns and cities has fluctuated over the years, so you can have some random-ass town with an absolutely massive cathedral in it because it WAS a relatively important urban area in the middle ages but now it's just a relatively small regional town.
#they're not exactly TINY towns#but Amiens Chartres and Reims have some very nice large cathedrals despite being relatively small regional cities in modern times#and there are even smaller towns that have massive cathedrals left over from when they were more important political centres#the largest (apparently) cathedral in the UK is in Salisbury#a town of only about 40K people

Why is it even called the Swiss guard... do you actually have to be Swiss to join? I guess there are Swiss Italians right... Wikipedia says it's 10% of the country. Weird type of restrictions for hiring though.
