Expo critic - Immaterial Labours
While some of our team members were not able to attend this, we explored it as a group. The initial flow was very effective, as there was only one way to go. However, nearing the middle of the expo I felt as though it wasn’t hugely clear where to go next. There was a huge variety of offerings, a lot dealing with ‘immaterial labours’ very literally, and some far more abstract such as the offering which forced you to become humble household objects.
As an audience member, you were made to think deep and hard, as well as fast in many of the offerings, which made it a lot of fun. Majority offered very interactive pieces which were hugely successful as they forced the audience to partake and really understand the ideas behind the offering. Because an expo has previously taken place, it felt a lot more relaxed and the group putting it on were a lot more cheerful and happy to be there. Overall, it was a wonderfully successful event.

MY EXPO EXPERIENCE: BEING A CRITIC
How did the expo address the overall theme?
The immaterial labour expo hit the mark on making its attendees extremely uncomfortable, whether that was physically or mentally, we were all uncomfortable and cringing in our own skin. Im personally quite an introverted person, so I found this expo hard to deal with as we went through the different groups, however, I did like the diversity in group stalls and the different kinds of uncomfortable situations or events they offered to the attendees. My highlight was the married at first sight expo, as it was just as cringe and baffling as we watch it on the television, but a very clever take on it using members of the audience who had no clue they were being cherrypicked to marry another student against their will.
What was the overall atmosphere?
The overall atmosphere of the expo was quite all over the place, and somewhat awkward, as everyone was uncomfortable (as expected and the aim of the expo) however people began to embrace this and it slowly started to flow a bit better. I do think they needed more ice breakers and not just straight into the awkwardness, which I know slightly defeats the purpose, but it would help with the overall audience reaction.
What was the system of exchange? In other words, what was the general offering of the expo?
To make attendees uncomfortable and be presented with uncomfortable situations whether it that was in a group or individually, mentally or physically. These situations are often ones we choose to avoid or ignore, however this expo chose to confront us with these challenges and force us to accept them.
Is there a variety of offerings? What stood out to me?
The expo offered a range of different offerings whether that was physically or mental, group or individual, as well as putting our groups together to work as a team to get out of or work in an uncomfortable situation. I thought the whole idea around the expo was extremely clever, despite it being so unbelievingly uncomfortable, but this did hit the mark on what they aimed to achieve. What I took away from this experience was to embrace the uncomfortable, and learn to love it as it's only human to feel uncomfortable in situations everyday. I really enjoyed the married at first sight, and the transitions between each group.

MY EXPO EXPERIENCE: BEING A PARTICIPANT
EXPO 1: IMPOSSIBLE THINGS
For the first expo that our cohort put on, “Impossible Things” also known as “Perspectiville” our group was acting as attendees. This meant we were able to roam about the expo, and be guided through the various exhibitions that our fellow peers had been working on for the past 9-10 weeks.
Perspectiville worked out really cool, as being the first collective to go first for the expo can be daunting. I enjoyed the range in creativity in the different groups and what they offered, and the thought that was put into delivering different elements of their theme. It was a huge blast from the past, really delivering a lot of nostalgia and snippets of my childhood, with videos such as blues clues and objects of my childhood such as fairy bread and board games I used to play as a child. They also implemented knowledge and care for their environmental impact; overall I think it was a successful and interesting first expo.

Perspectiville Review
It was great to see all the teams working collectively on this expo. There was a lot of creativity needed to put together many of the different components that contributed to it (and this was apparent). I found that the flow was well thought out and I enjoyed their choice of theme. The name ‘Perspectiville’ was both intriguing and suited the content. It was also cool that some teams were basing theirs around environmental issues as this is such a relevant topic. All in all I think this was a successful collaboration.

My Expo Experience Report:
How did the overall expo address the theme?
From my takings of the immaterial labour expo it was clear that they were focusing on the idea of discomfort. I did enjoy the different levels of uncomfortableness from the offerings. From being married at first sight, crawling through a tent of trash to having to ordering lollies from strangers without saying any words.
What was the overall atmosphere?
I think overall the atmosphere was pretty hyped, no one knew exactly what to expect but after the first few offerings you could start to see people becoming more willing to go with the flow. It was almost like people had started to accept that this wasn’t going to be comfortable but it could be some fun. I was one of these people!
What was the system of exchange? In other words, what was the general offering of the expo?
A chance to be put in uncomfortable situations whether it that was in a group or individually.
Is there a variety of offerings?
Yes I believe they did have a variety of offerings . The collective included group offerings as well as individual offerings, competitive offerings as well team work offerings. For me there were some stand outs that I really enjoyed. The married at first sight was an interesting offer to the expo. I found it interesting how whether they were the wedding couple or whether they were audience members everyone looked slightly uncomfortable at first but after a minute or two people were all laughing together and just enjoying the experience together.
Offerings that stood out to me:
Married at first sight:
One of the offerings involved the tv show married at first sight. Here someone walked up to you and asked if you would like to participate. Of course today was the day I dragged my boyfriend from Vic over so he could see what these expos were about…and he ended up being dragged into a wedding. It was good fun though and we both had a good laugh!
Ordering lollies from strangers:
Another offering involved ordering lollies from a stranger however you weren’t able to use any words. There was also a competitive element as you versed the person next to you.

My Expo Experience:
To start with I found this expo to be very well organised. It was clear from the beginning that this collective committee members worked really well together. This was reflected in the easy flow, navigation and set up of the event.
Offerings that stood out to me:
Cartoon room
Here we all got seated in front of a tv in comfy bean bags with snacks, so it was quite cosy. Then they started playing clips from different cartoons that were popular when we roughly 12 to 16. I found it to be really interesting how everyone immediately new either the tune or the lyrics to the song. Some of us were even singing along.
Breakfast cereal
This offering was so much fun! I first hand got to participate while my group watched and we were all giggling from start to finish. It was a great twist on perspective and all I can say was I was left wanting more.

Calligraphy wall inspiration/ mood board. This is a collection of imagery to inspire our dream wall which is a key part of our offering. We plan to use the large white wall in our space as a drawing and writing board where participants can write about anything. Whether this be what the took from our offering or even about their dreams do or not experience. A dream wall.
Our plan is to pencil on the calligraphy and the paint with black paint. Our participants will write on the wall in black sharpie.

This was a full scale mock-up we did in WK7 class to see how the blanket fort would work regarding the materials and safety of the structure. This also shows the atmosphere of our offering: calm and nostalgic.
As a result of this testing we decided to use a gazebo as the base structure for our blanket fort; our initial idea of using poles, tables and chairs would be too unstable to guarantee the participants safety while watching the dreams.

Prototyping part 2. The VR headset. We have realised this is the most efficient way to deliver the dreams visuals to attendees. With video footage on phones in the headsets. Or real VR headsets? Still to decide depending on what we can source. Also how many do we need? Maybe 6?

Euphoria Video Mood Board
Here is Myself and Moanas combined mood board which encapsulates what we visualise our video to look like for the VR headset video. This will be one of the three dreams users can choose from to plug into and experience in our expo. We will use this mood board to reference our imagery and draw inspiration from. Our visuals will be a mixture between sourced and created imagery.

Paradise Mood Board
Big focus on aesthetics and the places/things/scenarios that people would typically associate with pleasure. Pleasure = a response to paradise? This is something often felt in good dreams - those that we don’t want to wake up from.
