"Got something strong for a guy after his grueling shift?" Ares slid onto the seat at the counter, offering a grin to the serving bartender. Who was someone he knew all too well. Ares put his arms on the counter, leaning on them as he waited for Aubrey to focus her attention on him.
"Hey. Figured I'd stop by and check on you. And annoy you some to keep you company. Quiet night so far?" His job had kept Ares pretty busy recently. Too many night shifts that usually meant he'd be sleeping during the day if he didn't want to walk around like a zombie. In turn, he'd gotten a weekend off. And he felt like making the most of that.

Ares probably wasn't in a state to go out and party. Doing an all nighter playing video games just before a long shift hadn't been the best idea. When he'd been in his twenties, that'd been nothing. Now, halfway through his shift, he'd felt like he'd fall asleep standing. However, as his shift went on, the lead-heavy weight of sleep depravation had given way to an almost pleasant sluggishness. It felt close enough to being drunk that Ares had decided to go out and get buzzed for real.
He'd felt a bit like a zombie wandering the streets of Aurora Bay. Which was why he didn't see the woman until he'd practically ran into her. "Shit-" Ares cursed, almost stumbling and falling but managing to catch his balance. "Sorry, didn't see you there. You okay?"

"Well, we got a menu. You get fries and a drink of your choice from our amazing selection." Ares gestured at the fridge humming away in the corner, stocked with coke, sprite, dr. pepper and whatever other mostly sugary drinks you could imagine. "They're just the old fashioned burgers, but- they're really good old fasioned burgers. Salty, greasy soul food."
At least his boss couldn't complain that Ares wasn't trying to sell the food. Especially so late (or early, depending how you looked at it) people were pretty random with what they were going for. Probably because this stuff could be breakfast, dinner, or anything in between. "Hey man, stay as long as you want. I don't mind the campers. It's just me. Not many people come in at this time, so I'm usually enough to staff it. Just gets boring when nobody comes in."
Ares shrugged easily. It was why when somebody did come in, he usually used the chance for a chat. "What brought you in at this time of day? Are you a night-shifter or something?"
Tumblr media
Caleb smiles, one-sided, and there's something in the squint of his eyes that shows a disinterest in the pancakes. He never had much of a sweet tooth, and pancakes without maple syrup were just…
Not worth it.
"I'll have to take your word for it." The mention of the burgers, however— "Maybe I'll come by for lunch one day to try a burger out. Got any fun specials with those? Or are they just ol' fashioned burgers?"
One can't go wrong with an original so long as it isn't patties with freezer burn, and Caleb can say the quality of the food here in worlds better than any Waffle House he's strolled into. "I'll be hanging for a bit. Don't worry, I won't hog up a table in your section all morning. I'm not a camper. Is it just you working this early?"

"Hey man, thanks for waiting." Ares shrugged on his jacket as he jogged to the front of the All Nighter Diner to join his Ricardo. Ares greeted his friend with a grin and a friendly nudge with his elbow. "Sorry for being in late. Boss kept me in longer because I forgot to do my sidework last time. Didn't fire me though. Anyway, up for a night of fun?"
The night was decent enough, semi-warm even as the sun had disappeared behind the horizon. Ares would probably lose his jacket over the course of the night. And if everything went right, it'd be a good night. Ares knew his friend hadn't been doing too well for a while. And so, as his friend, Ares had decided to take him on a trip through Aurora Bay's nightly entertainment. You just have to get out, you know? Meet some new people, have some fun. C'mon, it'll be great. That was what he'd said. "Ready to roll?"

"Might as well take advantage of my undivided attention." Ares decided to take the acceptance and the lack of further rebuttals as a good sign and poured her a steaming hot cup with a grin. Should he offer milk and sugar too? Before he could ask, she was looking back up at him with a barely-a-smile smile and invited him to join her.
"Not gonna say no to that. Two fresh stacks coming right up. Just gotta go wake up the cook first." With that, Ares jogged off into the kitchen to ring in the order. With the place being practically dead, the pancakes didn't take long and five minutes and a chat with the cook later, Ares was carrying two plates with pancakes in his hands, both topped with a piece of runny butter, as well as bottles of maple and chocolate syrup, and a can of whipped cream.
"Forgot to ask about toppings. So I convinced the kitchen to let me bring out the classics. Don't tell my boss." Ares set down the plates for her, and slid down onto the seat opposite of her. "So, what brings you here? Quiet night of reading?"
Tumblr media
"I guess you're here now, so." Kate gestured to the empty coffee cup she had sat on the table in front of her, among her various items that had been the contents of her bag. She'd obviously sat down in the intention of staying for awhile, but her hostility towards people, was just her natural vibe.
As he spoke about her being a pick me up, her eyes drifted upwards to see the face of the man that spoke. Her lips curved ever so slightly, because perhaps it had been a long time since she'd received some sort of compliment — if that's what he'd meant. "You can bring me pancakes. Maybe you can bring yourself some too, and take a seat."

"Hey, no judgement from me when it comes to food. Whatever works for you. My go-to comfort food is instant ramen. With some peanut butter if I feel fancy." Ares smiled, taking note of her comment about candy. Looked like he'd been right about her needing a pick-me-up.
Maybe it had something to do with her return home. There was that faint unsure tone when she said she thought she made the right decision. He could relate to that. "Hell yeah, sounds great. I bet the places are gonna be good, if they're local approved and recommended. Bet you know a lot of those secret spots that they don't tell the newcomers and tourists about." The prospect of having somebody to show him around was appealing. And he wouldn't mind getting to know her some more.
"I mostly hit up the bars and events here. There's always something going on, and I get a chance at meeting new people; which, as you can tell, favorite activity. Other than that... I play video games. And I work out." That habit had come with him from prison. "Maybe we could hit up a bar together sometime. After you turn me into a bonafide Aurora Bay local."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"thank you for saying that - the stuff about being basic as a good thing. not you calling me out for not getting sweets," she pointed out. "but i do love sweets. more often when i'm in a good mood...." she was definitely giving too much thought to this minor of a conversation. evelyn considered that maybe having the gentle topic was better for her current state of mind.
evelyn had been gone for a long time, nodding her head slowly. "yeah. i felt like it was time to come home. i think i made the right decision," she stated with a linger of a questioning undertone. it seemed to early on to say for certain that this was the right choice. "nice to meet you, ares," she paused, "i'll show you around one day. we'll start with my favorite places. of course you can make your own decision if they're gonna be your favorites," she laughed. "what do you do in your free time if you're not exploring aurora bay?"

"Hey, you never know. You seem like the kind of guy who can keep people's attention." Ares responded with a slightly crooked grin, going with the flow of the conversation. The guy was definitely good-looking enough, especially with that smile. And Ares hadn't even been that far off in regards to career choices.
Tumblr media
"An actor? For like... shows and movies?" Ares nodded, kind of impressed. He wasn't really the type to actively watch anything, aside from occasonially binging on sick and lazy days. "Name might help, actually. Can't promise to recognize you - I'm not much of a show and movie buff." Ares decided to hold out his hand for a greeting shake. "Ares Melaina, by the way. Nice to meet you."

——- ❝ Perhaps not, but maybe if i had both, that'd be something huh ? ❞ he laughed a bit after, flirting some, just mostly seeing where it'd lead him. gently watching as he filled up his coffee cup before glancing around at others and giving a little nod. a soft charming smile crossing his lips. ❝ oh, i can tell. glad i caught you when i did then. not sure i can take the rest of the people here for your attention, ❞ roman joked, smile still on his lips as he looked over the other, almost just admiring him. nothing could easily come from this, but the british actor wasn't one to at least try. Hearing the model thing, he could feel a bit of heat in his cheeks and put his head down, laughing a bit. ❝ i've done some modeling, but it's not my job actually. i'm an actor — so perhaps you saw my work. ❞ roman picked his head up, just flashing his best smile as he looked at the other again. ❝ would a name also be helpful ? ❞

"If it isn't my favorite doctor and neighbor. Getting back from a shift?" Ares asked, blowing out some smoke as he spoke. He wasn't really a guy for cigarettes. He'd smoked pot for the most part back in NYC, with the occasional cigarette laced in between. That hadn't changed much in Aurora Bay, but sometimes, especially after a long day, he found himself craving them.
Tumblr media
Even though a doctor probably wouldn't approve. "We haven't chatted in a while. How are you doing, doc? Feel like doing some catching up over a burger and fries?"

Ares looked at the pot of coffee he was holding. "I can throw in some ice cubes for you." He grinned at the new arrival. "We got some canned iced coffee though, if you'd prefer that. Probably better for cooling down after a run."
Without waiting for an answer, Ares left the pot of coffee at the counter and made his way over to the freezer, and, after a second of thinking, grabbed two cans. He slid one over the counter towards the guy, like those bartenders in old westerns, and cracked his own can open as he made his way back. "So, what's going on that you need a pick-me-up? Work trouble?"
Tumblr media
Elijah needed to clear his head and in order to do that, running was always there for him. He had decided that he was going to go out for a nightly run and he would try to get the dark thoughts to escape his brain. He had done a couple miles as of now and he thought that it was time to take a break and it seemed to be a sign that he was near the All Nighter Diner. Elijah headed in and he looked for a place to sit and it was pretty dead inside so he decided to take a seat at the counter. It wasn't long before someone came over to him and started throwing questions at him. Elijah nodded slowly. "Sure, I'll take a coffee. Do you only have hot?" He asked. "Yeah, got a lot going on so I decided to go out for a run."

"Always glad to hear I'm improving something." Ares grinned, slightly crooked, and it didn't dissipate as she continued. Most of the late night people didn't want to be disturbed, usually because they were either tired and just here to get some cheap coffee and calories into their system, or they were having their breakfast before a nightshift. She, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind. Ares poured her a cup of coffee.
"Oooof, might be hard. It's so busy right now, I can barely keep up with the orders."He followed her joke as he joined her, sliding on the bench opposite to her. "Yup. It's Ares.... Maggie, right? How do pancakes sound, as a pick me up?" He tried to keep track of names, but with how many people came into the diner, it was hard. His eyes trailed to the book she'd been writing in, and he nodded at it. "Journal? Or are you writing a book?" A faint memory cropped up, of his brother doing the same. Always writing in notebooks, back when computers hadn't been everywhere.
Maggie had slipped into a booth moments earlier, journal in hand. It wasn't unusual for her to be out in the evenings, she was something of a night owl and had been since she could remember. With the setting of the sun came a type of quiet that let her mind wander. Sometimes it was work related, other times it was about day to day things but tonight her son dominated her thoughts. She was sitting quietly, jotting the thoughts down as they came when she felt the waitstaff approach in her peripheral, a small smile finding its way onto her features, "I'd say I'm surprised, but since you came on board, it's certainly gotten better," Being that the all night diner was, well, all night, this was one of the few places she could sit comfortably this late. "I'm doing good. Bit distracted, per usual, but I'd love one. Might help me settle," she paused, tapping the tip of her pen against her journal, "Ares, right? What do you think about joining me for a moment? Perhaps after the chaos dies down?" It was a tease, considering the place was so empty, she wouldn't have been startled if a tumbleweed rolled by.

"Nothing wrong with being basic if basic i good. Cheese fries are pretty common. Though most people like the sweet stuff for comfort food." Wasn't it something about sugar that made the brain send out happy hormones? Or was that chocolate? Ares shrugged to himself, deciding to not pursue tht rught now.
"Wow, you were gone for pretty long then, huh? Felt like coming home again?" That sounded kind of familiar to him. It was probably normal to want to move out and get away. He'd kind of done that, even if he didn't have much of a choice. "Ares. Nice to meet you Evie. And actually, that'd be amazing." He grinned at her, slightly crooked. "I got here... six? months ago. Kinda hard to remember. Feels like I don't really know this town all that well. It'd be great to have a nice local showing me around."
Tumblr media
the world is quieter and far less fast paced at night, or at least in some areas, that much evelyn knew. evie was more of a night owl herself, getting more of her productivity and entertainment satisfied. evelyn produced a small smile when the other commented on her selection being a good one. "i take that it's a common order? i don't mind being basic if comfort is an option," she replied with a soft smile.
evelyn hadn't anticipated having a conversation with anyone when she sat down in the diner. as much as she wanted to be alone, there was something that felt endearing about the gentleman in front of her. she nodded, "born and raised. left after high school. i just came back after leaving for ten years. it's been about three months since i came home." calling it home still felt unorthodox to her, but it was her truth. "evie," she gave her name to the other. "it's a pretty great place, but i'm bias," she laughed. "for showing me some human decency, if you needed the favor returned, i could always show you around sometime."

Out of everybody who might make their way into the diner, Ares hadn't expected there to be a face from prison among them. "Holy hell, Clint?" Ares could only stare at the familiar, yet also strange man, before he finally broke out in a grin. "Hell, man, one minute-" Ares rang in the order in lightning speed, then came back to properly fill up Clint's coffee.
"Shit, I haven't seen you in years. Didn't know you got out too- when did you get out? And how did you get here? Have you been here for while? Pretty sure I haven't seen you around so far." Ares barraged the other man with questions, not really trying to contain his excitement. Even if below all of that, inside of Ares chest, there was a note of something else. A faint sense of discomfort, that he pushed to the side as quickly as it had wallowed up.
As embarrassing as it was to admit, Clint got a little too carried away at the bar, he figured his best course of action was to head over to the diner to try and sober up before he tried to drive himself home. Luna was sat close by, under the table, curled just next to his feet clearly tired from it being way past her bedtime. He had been looking over the menu, the greasiest things standing out to him. His attention was drawn away from the sound of a voice, he turned to catch the mention of coffee. "Yeah, coffee sounds great." He responds, after a moment recognizing the familiar face. "As I live and breathe, that you Ares?" A grin stretches across his lips and he sits back to observe the other. "I'll take this as a better pick-me-up than anything I could ask fer, but I won't turn down a smash burger with some fries."

"I'm not the worst thing you can settle for. Not sure if I can live up to sleep." Ares grinned back in return as he filled up the guy's coffee cup. He had a faint sense that he'd seen the man around somewhere, though he couldn't quite pinpoint where. Aurora Bay wasn't that big, so he might've just seen him at the diner, or somewhere on the street. "I'm doing pretty good, actually. As you can see, incredibly busy-" He waved in the direction of the entirely dead diner "-feels like I'm overrun with work."
He didn't like night shifts, but it meant he could give some of the guests his undivided attention. Ares knew how to entertain himself. "What do you work as? Wait let me guess- Model? Because I'm pretty sure I've seen you somewhere."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
——- Another busy night that left roman just wanting to sleep the day away, but he'd never not be grateful for his job. acting wasn't his perfect dream job, but he was proud enough to have it as a job regardless. it was a lot some days, whether filming something, promoting, interviews, events and appearance or photoshoots. breaks seemed little and now he was unwinding at the diner, probably looking as tired as he felt, honestly. ❝  coffee would be lovely, thank you. ❞ he answered simply at first before he was asked more and laughed some, flashing a charming friendly smile. ❝  well work's been crazy today, but i finally have a few days to relax. i could just use all the sleep in the world, but i'll settle for this. chatting you up and asking how you're doing. ❞ he answered simply at first before he was asked more and laughed some, flashing a charming friendly smile.

"Hey, late at night is usually the best time to think about the stuff like that." Ares grinned, not bothering to jot down her order because she was the only guest right now. "Good choice for a pick-me-up though." He quickly rang the order through to the kitchen, and figuring he had a couple of minutes until the order came through, he might as well chat some more.
"You new here? Or one of those people who were born and raised here?" Deciding to help himself to the coffee (working in a diner had some perks), Ares tapped the side of the paper cup with his fingers. "I'm pretty new here, haven't got a chance to get to know too many people in this place."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she had been starting at the menu for far longer than she had typically. evelyn used to always know what she wanted and this transition back home has had her questioning her choices for a lot of things. it became quite overwhelming as she sat quietly in her own thoughts. there was never a thought in her mind that her ability to make a choice to eat was going to leave her questioning how that would change the rest of her night. shaking her head, evelyn couldn't believe it herself this was what was happening inside. "that is much too deep a question this late at night," she shrugged it off. "cheese fries, that'll be my pick me up," she finalized with a short nod.

"Just lay off the side of your bed with your head upside down while calling your boss. Makes you sound stuffed. Or zinc on an empty stomach, if you want to make a show of it." Ares grinned, as he poured a new cup of steaming fresh coffee. "Use that all the time. Don't tell my boss."
Tumblr media
It wasn't really surprising that people coming to a Diner in the middle of a night looked tired, and if it'd been busier, Ares might've left her to her own devices. Right now, there wasn't much to do. "Don't like your job? Or is it more of a "I need a vacation" type thing?"
Zoey enjoyed her home, it was a place she could unwind, but it didn't help when she couldn't get out of her head which prevented her from creating. So she found herself at thee Diner, hoping a new environment would help in some ways. "Yes, more coffee," she pushed the mug forward as she ran a hand through her hair and sighed. "I'm doing dandy...just thinking of ways to call out of work sick."

"Are you saying you don't want a pick me up?" Ares light-heartedly raised an eyebrow, his eyes wandering down to the book she'd been reading. He himself had never been much a reader, preferring sports over it, but his brother was and Ares had definitely annoyed him a couple of times by interrupting him. Not that it really stopped him, most of the time.
"Guess I could use one, too. Maybe that's why I'm here talking to you." That much was true. Chatting with the guests at the diner was one of the reasons he actually enjoyed the job. Definitely helped him get through the night shift. "So, no pick me up? No freshly brewed coffee and maybe some pancakes on the house?"
Tumblr media
"Are you assuming that I need a pick me up?" Kate stared up at the man from the table she sat, her book that she was currently reading still wedged between her fingers. "Unfortunately, this is just my face. I was blessed with many things, but sadly a welcoming face was not one... or maybe that's a good thing." She shrugged. "Maybe you need a pick me up."

"Coffee it is. Sugar, cream, anything else?" Most people coming into the diner in the middle of the night were in need of some coffee, so Ares poured her a cup to put in front of her. Though she looked a bit more than just tired. Maybe she'd just come off work? "Want some food with it? Burger, maybe? We got some new bacon cheese fries, they're pretty good. On the house." He added, with a friendly grin.

Stevie had a hard time sleeping. Dealing with the guilt of blatantly lying to her ex-boyfriend simply just to make him feel like shit, she made her way out of bed and towards the diner. Wearing a simple pajama tank top and shorts, she wrapped herself in a longer coat and sat down. "Oh my god. Yes...." She said pleadingly. "Thank you so much." She wanted coffee, comfort food and a hug.
