October 30, Tuesday Office of the Dean of the School of Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies Piano Duets and Sarswela Songs 5:30 - 7:00 PM
On October 30, 2018, at 5:30-7:00 p.m., the Office of the Dean of the School of Humanities and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Ateneo de Manila University, in cooperation with Arete, present "Piano Duets and Sarswela Songs" at the Doreen Blackbox at Arete.
The Doreen Blackbox is named after the late Doreen Gamboa Fernandez, who for over thirty years taught at the Ateneo de Manila University. Her sister was the late concert pianist Della Gamboa Besa.
In 2012, Mrs. Besa performed piano duets with Ana Marie de Guzman at a concert at the Ateneo in commemoration of her sister's tenth death anniversary. The concert and an exhibition of Dr. Fernandez's memorabilia and papers were organized by the Ateneo Library of Women's Writings and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, which Dr. Fernandez once headed. During that affair, Mrs. Besa revealed that she used to perform duets at recitals with her sister at St. Scholastica's College before she (Doreen) went on to take further studies in literature.
The concert "Piano Duets and Sarswela Songs" is a way for the university to formalize the establishment of the blackbox, to commemorate the woman after whom it is named, and to thank the donor who underwrote its construction. It is also a way of resurrecting the moment when the sisters Doreen and Della were partners on stage.
Performing works from Mrs. Besa's repertoire are pianists Mary Anne Espina and Grace Garcia, both of whom studied with Mrs. Besa. Soprano Nenen Espina sings songs from the sarswela, a Philippine dramatic form--the Spanish zarzuela indigenized--which Dr. Fernandez studied in the 1970s and 80s.
Admission to the concert is free of charge, but because seats are limited, interested parties are requested to notify the organizers by registering through https://goo.gl/forms/XzpXc2sAPxJRxqRr2 or by calling 4266001 loc. 5340.

SBC4
Tumblr media
One relevant question raised and prompted much discussion in the last Sandbox Conversation on the future of Philippine education was that of the implications of automation on an education system premised on supplying human labor to the workforce.
Automation changes employment demands, as it has constantly done so over the centuries. This conversation explores the future of labor in light of today’s rapid technological advancement in the areas of automation and artificial intelligence, as well as the ethics of these advancements. Some visions are utopic – people no longer have to work like machines. Others are not – what about the people who are perpetually displaced by these advancements?
The conversation, prompted by the project of Reese Fernandez-Ruiz (Rags to Riches), saw insights from Chiara Ledesma (Computer Science student), Francis Bautista (Indigo Research), Luis Abad (Economics Department), Didith Rodrigo (Ateneo Laboratory for Learning Science), Peachy Pacquing (researcher on the future), Cecille Villena (Plan International), Paolo Agloro (Department of Information Systems and Computer Science), Ralph Regalado (Senti), and Enzo Bautista (Exora). It concluded with intentions to connect the participants and prompt a possible collaborative project between them.
Anybody interested in opportunities for projects and collaborations, participation in future Conversations under the Sandbox Programs may contact us at [email protected].

Rags2Riches
Tumblr media
Sandbox Conversation (SBC) 3 on the future of Philippine education ended with questions about industries sustained by labor at a time of developing automation. This serves as the starting point for SBC4, which aims to discuss the implications of automation, artificial intelligence and the future of labor across various disciplines.
This conversation is also prompted by social enterprise of Ateneo alumna Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, President and Founding Partner of Rags2Riches, Inc. Ms. Fernandez-Ruiz/R2R has recently been granted a Sandbox Residency as an alumni group, with the hopes that the Sandbox programs can provide them with new tools and perspectives that will bring about improvements to the methods of community engagements foundational to their business model.
With SBC4 and Areté’s provision of resources, time, space and collaborative opportunities, this partnership with R2R may witness the generation of new ways to reimagine the methods of community engagement and social development in ways that address the needs and concerns of changing times for labor and entrepreneurship.

Birds and Trees
Tumblr media
The Ateneo Institute of Sustainability, in partnership with the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, has been organizing bird walks on campus for several years now, and this activity has become the starting point of Birds and Trees, a project that was recently granted a Sandbox Residency earlier this year. One such bird walk was held last August 17th, Friday. Faculty members and some administrators participated in the walk, which also saw the testing of prototype materials developed using Areté’s resources in order to improve the participants’ birding experience.
Birds and Trees, led by Abigail Favis (Department of Environmental Science) and Trinket Constantino (Department of Biology), endeavors to involve the community in order to achieve campus sustainability goals. The initial objective of the project is to equip the general population with skills to identify and document bird and plant life on campus such that the crowd sourced data can inform strategies for sustainability.
Areté, through the Residency, then provides resources and opportunities for collaboration in order to come up with new modes of visualizing and strategizing towards campus sustainability.

EJK YA
Tumblr media
Empathy is the noblest thing, or so it seems to be. But what does it mean, and what comes after? Last August 18th, the Sandbox School held the Improv-ing Empathy workshop. A group of strangers gathered together at Joseph and Gemma Tanbuntiong Studio to play, listen, and retell each other’s stories in a four-hour intensive improvisation-acting workshop by Missy Maramara (Department of Fine Arts). The workshop activities drive home the manner in which emotions, like memory, when shared, becomes both a validating and driving force for action.
Participants of the workshop included Cyan Abad-Jugo and Jocelyn Martin (Department of English), along with their students who are part of the project that they lead, EJK YA. This project aims to publish an anthology of young adult literature that responds to extra-judicial killings, and it has recently been granted a Sandbox Residency. It not only provides a novel approach to manuscript development, as the students participating have little to no creative writing training, but it also provides these young people an avenue to respond through writing to the ongoing issues of EJK’s and the systems of violence and corruption connected to it.
Besides slots for the said improvisation-acting workshop, Areté will also provide a Sandbox Conversation prompted by the project, as well as a Sandbox Writing Residency grant and an exhibit and forum on the project and its process. It will be interesting to see what voices can be heard from such an approach to issues of violence and what can arise out of empathic engagements from young adults to the rest of Philippine society.

Arete hosts ALLS Lecture Series with Dr. Margot Brereton of Queensland University of Technology
Tumblr media
Tea kettle + lava lamp + tablet computer + Internet connection = ???
To Dr. Margot Brereton, the aggregation of these elements is a messaging tea kettle: a presidential hotline that connects her home in Australia to that of her mother in England.  When Dr. Brereton makes herself a cup of tea, the lava lamp in her mother’s home glows, and vice-versa. This creates opportunities to write short messages on the tablet, to touch base briefly but often, and to feel each other’s presence on a daily basis, despite being thousands of miles apart.
During her talk on April 5, 2018, Dr. Brereton shared this and other innovations that explore and support networks of relationships between people, places, and objects. Dr. Brereton is a professor of engineering and interaction design and Leader of the Computer Human Interaction Discipline of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.
