About the master

Q. How old is the master?

A. Probably around his fifties.

Q. In his fifties?!

A. For men, it's from their fifties they get fatter and fatter around the belly...Yes, it's true...wait, what the hell I am saying?

Q. You love old men, don't you?

A. Yes, I do

Q. I'm sure you prefer witty old men...

A.No, actually, I am really into the appearance. Even if he is very witty, the appearance come first.

Q. Is the master's monocle from your personal taste?

A. Yes, it's from my personal taste but also, you know, to make him look more scary. I mean, look at the fact he doesn't wear socks, that he has a monocle, that his vest is white...those kind of things, I think he wears them to scare the person in front of him.

Q. I wonder what is the colour of the master's hair?

A. Hmmm, right, I think the master has very light brown hair. But since he has also white hair, it looks very light.

Q. I feel Sheryl and the master have the same fashion, would they get along well?

A. Wait, it's totally different, don't you think??? Impossible. They would NEVER get along.

Q. Does the master live in the bookshop or does he go to work every morning?

A. Ahaha, I see.. probably, he spends a lot of time in the bookshop but I am pretty sure he has a house somewhere.

About Allen 

Q. Actually, I wonder how Allen's parents are. I look forward seeing them.

A. yes, yes.

Q. Allen talked in details about his past to Kanda but, how much did he reveal to Johnny and Link?

A. I think Link and Johnny don't know that much about Allen's past. Of course, he has talked to them, but he didn't give them all the details. He told them the essentials thing to know 

Q. Allen can't write well, but can he read?

A. He reads pretty slowly too.

Q. What seasonsdo the DGM characters like?

A. For Allen, it's definitely winter.

Q. To you, what song fits Allen the most?

A. For me, it's Snow Kiss. I love this song and I love it as Allen's song. And then..what else... Actually, I had a lot in mind but I forgot. I can't remember the name ahaha. But I love Snow Kiss. I really love it. I'm still listening it today, it really reminds me of Allen.

Q. I want to see Allen's black side again!

A.I think you'll see it again.

About Kanda

Q. Could you talk about Kanda's hobby, like gardening?

A. What? Wait, did Kanda like gardening? When it comes to gardening, I feel it would be more Krory's hobby...(Someone reminds her it was on his profile on Grey ark) On his profile?! Sorry....on Grey ark? Really? Hmm, but let me tell you something. I'm not the only one to make a fanbook. There is also an editor who makes the fanbook, and we have to divide the pages between the ones I make and the ones I let the editors make. Yes, to be honest, I do not feel satisfied at all with Grey Ark, because I was still publishing weekly, so I was overwhelmed by my work. So, I wanted to make a new fanbook, that's the reason why I made Grey log. I think Grey log is pretty accurate.

Q. Rather than gardening, I feel Kanda would be great at taking care of a bonsai.

A. Yes, I feel it too. Besides, I'm sure he would not use scissors to cut but his sword ahaha, like "swich swich swich" ahaha. And it would make a really pretty bonsai.

Q. So, if Kanda doesn't like gardening, what's his hobby?

A. I think it's training, and only training. I think it's the type of person who likes to move and to sweat.

Q. What's the flower that would match Kanda?

A. Well, it definitely would be the lotus. 

Q. Does Kanda prefer cold or hot soba?

A.I think he prefers cold soba.

Q. Does Kanda leave some hair on the side on purpose when he ties his hair? 

A. When he has his hair down, he puts it behin his ears so...Well..I don't know. I think he doesn't have any preference, he just does it randomly. He doesn't think something like "I can't go out without this hairstyle"... especially Kanda in the latest chapter. I think he is just random.

Q. In the Animate special present card, you said your mother used to do Kendo (Japanese sword), did she become an inspiration for Kanda?

A. When it comes to Kanda, it was born from my imagination and also, I looked up some references, I watched movies, etc.

Q. Is Kanda finally going to say what he wanted to say to Allen?

A. Right. I think I've told you before, but there is indeed something Kanda wanted to say to Allen. There was something, yes. But Kanda did not say it. I told Kanda, when he was about to say goodbye to Allen, "It's okay, you can say it", and I was ready to draw the scene but Kanda did not say a thing. I tried to make him saying it, really, but Kanda didn't say it. Maybe he thought it was not the time for it, or that he didn't need to say it anymore...maybe it's that. Really, he had something to tell Allen...

Q. I kind of get Kanda here...it's hard to speak when you didn't prepare.

A. But maybe he actually didn't speak even though he had prepared his speech.

About Lavi

Q. Is there a character who doesn't like sour food?

A. Probably Lavi...

Q. How much time has passed since Lavi and Bookman were captured by the Noahs?

A. Aaaah, yes. So actually, I plan to tell it in the story later. But wait, if you think about it...it's clearly not one year! The first date that appears in the manga is "three months" , and then you add time when Johnny was going after Allen. It makes around 4 to 5 months. It's not even 6 months.

Q. Would Lavi get angry if you gave him a nickname?

A. No, I don't think he would..

Q. I'm sure Lavi reads a lot but does he also read fictions?

A. Yes, he does. He likes reading about people's lives so I guess he also likes mystery novels.

Q. Do all the members from the Bookman and the Zugle clan can read like Lucia did?

A. This really depends on the person, I guess. I can't tell for everyone, I think it might be a special capacity of some people, and maybe some people are better at other things. Maybe Lucia is faster than the others when it comes to reading. I think you'll see it later in the story, so please check it out. I think you'll get it at some point.

Q. Does Lucia live in the bookshop ?

A. No, she doesn't, she is not always on the bookshop.

About Junior

Q. The notebook Junior has in the last page, did you think about what it was?

A. I did research and I learned that ancient books were made like this, so my assistant drew it while looking at references for DGM and DGM century. I wanted to make something that would fit DGM historic period. It's my assistant who drew it, I didn't take part in it so I could not complain. I just asked him to draw this notebook. So maybe this notebook is the result of my assistant's hobbies ahaha, or maybe he really thought about the historical period. The notebook is not divided into categories, I think it's more like someone's memoirs.

Q. What is Bookman Junior and Lucia favorite food?

A. Let me think...right, it's....Hmmm...infeel it's more interesting not to reveal now, but after, so I won't say anything on purpose.

About Cross 

Q. Who is the fashion leader in the order?

A. The fashion leader?! Eh? Wait, is there one to begin with? I think it's Cross but...yeah.

Q. What kind of flowers does Cross Marian like?

A. Hmm, let me think. I think he loves small flowers. Not big ones or excessively big flowers. Cross does not like flowers that have been planted to stand out, I think he prefers small flowers on the path.

About Lucia

Q. Lucia is pretty tall...

A. Yes, I have decided she would be tall since the time I have created her.

Q. How is Lucia's voice? Is it pretty high?

A. Let me think...it's the same pitch as Shibasaki Kō (Japanese actress), not that high or low.

Q. Did you decide what the old man who was in the bookstore talked to Lucia?

A. Yes, I did. You are talking about the old man looking like a homeless person? This man used to be a soldier, a very high graded one actually. So, he talked to Lucia about the wars he did when he was young.

Q. Are the flowers surrounding Lucia roses?

A. Yes, it is. Those are roses.

Q. Is there a reason for the roses?

A. At first, I was wondering what should I do for the flowers and I tried many different types of flowers. But those aren't red roses. I felt roses would match Lucia, but not red ones. That's why I chose not to add colour to the roses around Lucia. The red colour doesn't match Lucia. I've tried many other flowers...for instance...I forgot the name, but flowers with bigger petals..but I felt it didn't match. And you know,  roses have torn right? That's what I want you to feel later in the story.

Q. What about the flowers surrounding the scene when Lucia gives Allen the box with the seed of truth?

A. Ah, those flowers...okay, this is because I wanted to make the mood lighter, almost like a comedy. I think anything could be fine so I tried to look something to put in the back ground, and it became flowers. There is no meaning.

Q. Lucia seems to be slow (because when she appeared in the flashback in night 222, she was told to be slow at running), can she fight?

A. Lucia is slow...? What do you mean? Ah, you mean small Lucia right? Okay okay. About her fighting skills...hmm, I'll let you discover.

Q. What is the Lucia panel you put the most effort in?

A. Well, there is the panel I talked earlier, and also the panel where she says "prove it", especially the glasses, I did my best. I used tones to do this panel, but I tried to be very careful.

About the Anime/songs of the Anime

Q. What are your top 3 DGM anime song?

A. The song I love the most is Snow Kiss. I really love Snow Kiss. Snow Kiss is really my favourite Actually, I have a small anecdote about Snow Kiss. When they decided the song for the ED, I heard that the singer actually loved DGM and candidated herself to be the singer of the ED. I was so happy, especially because I love Nirgillis. The first, I loved the song and then, I had this happy news, so I loved her even more.

(many comments about their favourite OP and ED, Hoshino says she doesn't remember the titles and imitates the 4th opening from Gekidō)

Random

Q. What is the drink they had at the bookstore?

A. It's black tea.

Q. I was so happy that Tyki appeared in the last chapter, but he cut his hair...why? Was he fed up?

A. Ah yes, so before Tyki appeared in the chapter, he was fighting with Tiedoll and actually, he got his hair burnt by Tiedoll's Innocence. That's why he had to trim them.

Q. The seed of truth looks a bit sour? Is it actually sour?

A. I don't think it has much taste, but if it has some, it's not a good one. I think it tastes like salt water.

Q. There was one time when Kanda and Krory got their profiles inverted on a foreign edition...

A. ah foreign editions...I can't really do something about it. I can't check because I receive samples only after the volume is published, it's too late.

Q. What is the Link panel you put the most efforts in?

A. Right, for Link, it's when he says "I'm going to destroy you".

Q. I would like to celebrate Mana and Nea's birthday so please, could you tell me when it is?

A. Nea and Mana...right....right..(and she didn't answer!)

Q. Could you do an art exhibition abroad?

A. So, about this...it's going to be difficult. I have never received an offer, and for that kind of things, you need to have a proposition...it's not like "Oh, I want to do it, I'm gonna go", you have to receive an offer saying "please come".

Q. I love Johnny, so what is his eyes'colour? And eyes shape?

A. Johnny has very light brown eyes.

Q. What was the most happy news/announcement you had about DGM?

A. About DGM...? An announcement...? Let me think...you know, I have never got really excited or happy when it comes to a DGM news. I am more surprised, like "wait, is it alright?" "You are sure about that?" "Really?"  Actually, what makes me happy is when there is a sign event, and you know, there is a lottery to be selected to the event, right? And when there are a lot of applicants, I always feel very happy. It makes me really happy, each time there is a selection and that I am told that there are many applications. I feel relieved and I am happy to make the event. Oh, and for instance, recently, we are making a lottery to win a DGM trump card set, right? It was an event in order to increase the magazine subscribers (because you had to subscribe to the magazine to apply) and I got to create goodies that I always wanted, a trump card set! And the editors told me there were a lot of applicants, so I was happy. Actually, what makes me happy is when I receive a news which makes me understand the fans' reaction. 

Q. Sensei, you are so humble!

A. No, for real, I don't get it! I am a person who draws manga alone in her room, so I have no idea of what people think about me. Of course, I do receive fan letters, but I spend my life facing the manuscripts I draw so I really have no idea what people think and how they react. Of course, I want to know but at the same time I don't want to know. So, each time I hear news like "xxxx copies were sold" "we are making an anime" "we are having a new event", I'm like super worried, I don't know if it will go well or not...I'm like "it should not be me but another mangaka, don't you think? Not D.Gray-Man, but this manga!" Especially because when I was younger, if you asked me if I were 100% satisfied of my work, I would tell you no. I had no confidence. So each timew I was very suspicious...so, that's why when I hear there are a lot a fans, I fell happy and I'm not doubting anymore.

Q. When Daysia died, Tiedoll sent the drawing to his family, but does he do that often?

A. Yes, he does it often.

Q. Sensei, we would like to have a new illustrations book!

A. Yes, I know, but please do not tell me that. Tell this to the editors. I can't decide myself, I am powerless.

Q. Is there a reason why Tim can get bigger or smaller?

A. About that..I think I'll explain it in the flashback arc, so please check it out.

Q. This year is the 20th anniversary of the serialisation, did you plan something, like an event?

A. I won't say there is no event, right. There is something coming up. But I can't tell you more. But like, the 20th anniversary, it's nothing...it's still young. You might think it's so young that it is not an age to celebrate.  

Q. The colour palet of characters in DGM always change, I like it.

A. Actually, it's because I am not good with colours..

Q. What is Bookman (the old one) eyes colour?

A. It's silver

Q. Who are the top 3 characters who are the nicest with girls?

A. Hmm, first, Allen...then Krory...let me think... Lavi (laugh) you expected it, don't you?

Q. The clothes Road wears when she is human, is Sheryl the one choosing them?

A. Yes, it's his preference.

Mana had a younger brother ...

I really hope we get some more details about these two one day. I imagine that Nea truly fought for Mana because one of them had to be strong as Mana was 'sick' for so long, Nea had no choice to overtake, to protect his brother.

I do not trust wisely.

throwing out my thoughts before chapter 251 of d.gray-man releases. spoilers for up to chapter 250 below!!

disclaimer: I don't hate wisely. I really like him. but I don't trust him right now.

I don't trust his actions right now. before chapter 250, I was sure wisely was going to be the new "leader" of the noah now that the earl is somewhat out of commission, either outright or by pulling the strings/giving suggestions to other members. road wasn't really the leader of them but they looked to her for answers about the things they didn't because she was the one that had stuck around the longest (such as when tyki's scars are aching) and was clearly the closest to the earl.

wisely is already suspicious of nea before this...

and when he approached the earl, wisely made a few comments about it, urging the earl to leave.

but he has an extra thought in chapter 224 about how he specifically won't let him cross paths with nea ever again. not really sus, I mean nea did kill the noah and try to kill the earl and the earl is clearly Not Over It, so makes sense.

but as they leave, wisely and tyki have a very specific exchange.

not only did wisely apparently let bookman go before they could find out more info, but wisely seems to know full well about nea- possibly being the reason he let bookman go, before bookman could tell the others who the earl and nea actually are.

specifically, wisely says "even if you don't find it out from me, you'll find it out eventually" and thinks to himself how this information will hurt tyki. that, to me, sounds like he knows most of the secrets of mana/nea. otherwise, how would he know that it will be so damning to tyki?

that brings us back to chapter 250, where they're interrogating apocryphos. I suspect the main goal of this was to find the heart rather than information on nea.

however, apocryphos can't help but jab at the ignorant noah who are in way over their heads, letting it slip that tyki has some deep connection to nea. wisely of course responds naturally by—

—destroying apocryphos' head, preventing him from talking until he heals. he claims it's because there's no use in interrogating him any further, that they've already got as much info as they can. that marks the 2nd interrogation victim he's let loose before the rest are ready.

with nea and the mention of 35 years ago being brought up, there's still tension in the air and sherril isn't about to let it go. remember, he's still pissed about road being hurt so badly trying to protect allen (because she wouldn't protect nea, right?)

and here it's finally brought up that, despite road being the only true survivor (aside from the earl), wisely has more knowledge about the events due to his demonic eye. he's finally being called out for possibly withholding the truth from them.

and what does he do? deflect it immediately. "it's not my fault, it's the fault of the previous wisely!"

okay, let's really dissect this page.

he starts off with apologizing, saying that the reason the other noah can't remember the tragedy is because the knowledge was so devastating the previous wisely locked it away (I guess before he died?? how does that work).

specifically, "to know nea is to know 'mana'". wisely knows who mana is, whereas the other noah only know that nea called the earl mana which made him cry.

the part I think most important is this- how conflicted he looks when thinking about the earl. he's not thinking about the noah here, he's thinking about the earl's safety. about mana.

why is he so conflicted?

let's go over some more stuff real quick.

wisely knows tyki looks suspiciously just like nea

2. nea isn't just a noah, he's the earl

3. SOMETHING happened to adam to make him disappear/split into mana/nea and is most likely connected to the noah & innocence

with all of these things in mind, this leads me to believe this...

wisely is keeping the info about mana secret to get the earl to destroy the world

not really a big shocker, but let me explain. the goal of the noah is to see the end of the world and aid the earl in that, but we've learned that the earl acts somewhat as a ticking time bomb, as he is the one that brings about the end days.

that is the goal of all of the noah, but road has been apprehensive about it because the current earl is mana. she wants him to be safe, and when cross urged her to help him save mana, instead of scoffing at the idea she starts crying and saying she can't because she's a noah. she wants to save him but being a noah cancels that out.

but our wisely didn't grow up with mana & nea. wisely didn't witness nea kill their entire family, mana kill him in return, and quickly descend into madness. wisely has secondhand memories so he doesn't have that emotional attachment.

this is why I felt wisely would be the new "leader". he has the insight to know that the earl = mana and that nea is part of the earl but doesn't have the emotional baggage road has. this gives him the best opportunity to see the noah's goal to the end, to push the earl over the edge and make him destroy it.

how would the rest of the noah feel if they found out the earl they've known their entire life isn't 7000 years old? that he was raised as a human just 50~ years ago? that the earl can die?

and worse-

how would the noah feel if they found out a personality of the earl was the one what slaughtered them all?

it would absolutely fracture them, possibly worse so than the exorcists finding out about apocryphos. the man they trust as their leader, who they feel in their souls a deep connection to, isn't even actually him and the man that killed them was supposed to be their leader.

that's why I feel like wisely is still keeping secrets. if he does actually know who mana/nea are, then it doesn't make sense for him to reveal this info so easily. I don't know what he's going to do next as the scene cuts there with him supposedly revealing the secrets, but I have a fear he's either only revealed a small part of it or worse, created a new lie about mana/nea to show them.

maybe he's telling the truth??

there's always a chance I'm grasping at straws, but from what I've seen it just doesn't make sense to me for him to reveal "everything" about mana/nea to the other noah, ESPECIALLY TYKI, so quickly. sherril snaps at him and he immediately folds. we've seen such careful character motivations thusfar from everyone else and I doubt hoshino would stumble here, on such a pivotal plot point.

so yeah, I don't believe wisely when he says he's going to reveal everything. he has the best shot out of all the noah to bring about the apocalypse and it doesn't make sense for him to fumble that now.

HOSHINO KATSURA LIVESTREAM ABOUT DGM 251 SUM-UP (first part)

Hello,

As some of you may know, I have live tweeted Hoshino-sensei's stream, which took place on April, 28th. She answered many questions and talked about the new chapter.

Here is a more detailed sum-up of what has been said. At first, I wanted to make a transcript but I realised the stream was too messy to do so, that's why I decided to create "categories" and to sum-up what she said for each category. Hence, this is not in order (in comparison to the way she spoke in the stream).

There will probably be two or three parts, I'll publish them in a few days or weeks. This is the first part, summing up until the 40th minute, in a total of two hours of stream.

Of course, beware of spoilers from chapter 251.

Have a good reading, because it is a long post.

The beginning of the stream

Hoshino Katsura: "So, last week was my birthday. I wanted to do this live stream on my birthday and talk about DGM, but, sadly, I was under pressure with all the deadlines, I didn't have time, so I decided to do it this week.

So, about today! I said I wanted to talk about DGM but I haven't really decided what I was going to talk about. I don't have any idea of what I should be telling you, but look, it was Lenalee's birthday recently, and then, it will be soon Kanda's birthday and Lavi's birthday. After that, a small break, a few minor characters and then the main character, Allen's birthday. It's like a full calendar. I can talk about their birthdays if you want, or the new chapter, or answer your questions, I can do anything! If possible, I would like to avoid talking about things that I have talked about 100 times, for instance how did I became a mangaka. Of course, if you want to ask, please do so.

Q. Kanda's birthday is important...

A. Yes, it is. June, 6th right? It's soon..hmmm, that's kind of scary. On this day, I'll have soba, so please spare me. If I don't, I feel it would be unforgivable.

Q.I'm taking my paid leaves every year for Kanda's birthday :

A. For real ? Kanda... seriously...

About the new chapter (overall)

Q. I want to hear about the latest chapter! Or some characters like Lavi...

A. Lavi-chan? Yes, I would like to talk about Lavi but you know...I can't...Ah, but if it is TMI or random stuff, I can.

Q. Where is Lavi?

A. (Small laughs) Hmmm, you are right, where is he?

Q. I would like to ask what was you favourite panel from the new chapter and what panel was the most difficult to draw.

A. Right. So let's talk about the latest chapter. Did you read the latest chapter? I'll talk about it so please be careful. And I won't be explaining page by page, but more like overall.

The panel which I put the most efforts in...let me see ...Well, I can tell you for sure it's not the first page. The first page was drawn by my assistants...let me think...let me start by my favourite. It's the one where Lucia raises her finger and says "please answer one question from the master". I love this part. I think I drew her in a cute way. Besides, it has been a long time since I have drawn a girl...it was so fun to draw a girl. So this page, I love when she smiles while raising one finger, I really like it.

And the one I put the most efforts in...Well, there are a lot of them but it would be when Allen literally jumps toward Lucia and takes the poison, and drinks this kind of disgusting seed. I was a bit stressed when drawing it. I tried to put all my feelings. There is no dialogue here, so I wanted you to concentrate on the characters'movements. And when Allen says "thank you", I really love his facial expressions. It has been a long time since I have drawn that well Allen's expression. Allen is a difficult character when it comes to drawing his expressions. He smiles, but he has  a lot of different types of smiles, even for me who has created him, I am sometimes wondering what hides behind his smile. I feel I can't get his feelings right, so it's hard to draw him. However, this time, he really drank the poison without hesitation, he was determined. Hence, his smile was sincere and I feel I drew him well.

Q. I loved the chapter but yes, it was emotionally hard to read

A. Yes, it was. My editor and assistants told me it was going to be tough one, I was like "ah, really?" and when I was drawing it, I realised it was. But it's a kind of win-win, right? It's hard for you but it is also hard for me.

About Lavi

Q. All the fandom was so excited to see those two small Lavi panels.

A. Aaah, yes. I drew Lavi this time, it has been a while since I drew him in the story. If course, I draw him a lot outside of the story (for instance, for her Instagram) I feel my training has paid, because I drew him very easely. Yes, Lavi, dude, you're so easy to draw. I love you. Besides, please take a look, he has a very serious look. I'm not used to that but I succeeded in writing in one shot, I am very happy.

Q. When did Lavi get his ears pierced? Is it Bookman?

A. Hmmm, no I think it's his parents. He got his ears pierced when he was a child, maybe a baby.

Q. Was Lavi raised by Bookman ?

A. No, well, Lavi is human, he has to be born from a mother.

Q. Didn't he become a Bookman when he was born?

A. Like I told you, I can't answer. I'm sorry. I can't tell you now.

Q. When Lavi changes uniform, he got new earrings (bigger ones), is it because he wanted it or is it Johnny who gave him?

A. It's totally from him, ahaha. He wears the accessories he likes

About Lucia

Q. Comments about how cute is Lucia

A. Yes, it has been a while since i have drawn a real lady. My assistant, who is a guy, told me Lucia was very cute and that he could marry her. She is so cute that she could be Lenalee's rival?! Actually, Lucia is a character that I had in mind for a while, and she is going a to have a part to play in the plot. On my storyboard, he was swallowing the whole seed but I realised it was not that great...and Allen is cute...so you know, I don't want to draw Allen having this disgusting thing in his body. I decided to break it in half.

A. I just wanted to make it look disgusting, like you should really NOT drink it. So I decided to add a "face", it's kind of scary, right? But to be honest, I didn't have a lot of time, so I could not take time to design it. It's also a bit too big to be swallow as a wholew that's why I should have drawn it smaller if Allen were to swallow it. But making it higher makes it look more disgusting but I realised Allen could not have swallowed it.

Q. Will Nea also learn about the truth Allen is going to see because of the seed of truth?

A. : hmm, well, yes but listen, I know you are all very curious but please understand I can't really answer such questions. Please ask random stuffs. Besides, I'm not sure you want to hear spoilers. About the publication pace and the upcoming chapters (flashback arc)

A. No, there is not.

A.No, I won't make it long. I think. It hope. You know, I want to draw the present so I can't afford spending too much time on the past. I'm sure you think that too. So yes, it won't be long, probably.

Q. How did you decide the design of the bookstore?

A. So, I told my assistants what I wanted but I let them do it. I was busy drawing the plot, and they were in charge of the backgrounds. What did I ask them: well, since it's about Bookmen, I wanted a place as dirty as Lavi or Bookman's room. I don't want a cute and pretty bookshop but a dirty one. I think they made a good job.
