Can I just rant for a moment? Someone's probably already said this, and likely better than I can. I'm almost certain I've seen part of this thought somewhere before, credits to them - I'm just having emotions right now.
I'm sifting through my Buck/Tommy drafts (the muses have been increeeeeeedibly generous to me these last few days), and as I re-watch their scenes together, I'm just... argh.. I love them so much as a couple. All questionable storyline choices and surrounding drama aside, there's a core theme I see with Tommy that perfectly complements Buck's character.
Tommy is the guy who loves Buck anyway.
This isn't about Buck's flaws (and he has many of them, as every character does, which is precisely why we love them!). It's about the broader world around them, about Tommy's deep understanding of the forces seemingly stacked against them. Or at least, that's his perception, rooted in years of being closeted and the fear of truly being seen.
Of course, in the show, we primarily experience the world from the mains' perspectives, so we're largely "in Buck's head," not Tommy's. To Buck, Tommy appears cool, experienced, older, calm, and *add similar adjectives here*. Yet, he's not, or at least not just that. We catch glimpses of this throughout their story, but the breakup especially marks a shift from "Tommy as he wants to be seen" to "Tommy as he truly is": in some ways very insecure, likely always believing their relationship had an expiration date, convinced Buck would find someone better or realize he wasn't that cool after all.
Tommy, to me, seems to have internalized a similar thought pattern to Buck, just in a different form. Buck's is "I'm not enough," while Tommy's reads to me as "I don't deserve this kind of happiness."
So, of course, he's ripping off the bandage. Of course, he's leaving this blooming relationship while he can, even if it guts him. He knows he can survive that pain, right now. But if they'd gone a few steps further, if he'd allowed Evan any deeper into his heart, it would have been a catastrophic wound, like a stinger ripped from a bee, taking his heart and all internal organs with it.
Their getting back together would be such a storytelling choice. It's all: "I love you even though I'm terrified, even though this rips me wide open, even though the world might throw all kinds of bullshit at us; even though a part of me knows I don't deserve this."
(This also ties into the beautiful theme of choosing love, working for love, and showing up for it – which is why I adore 01x10 and Buck's conversation about "making happiness.")
I just. I LOVE this dynamic. The capital Anyway. Buck pleading with his parents to "love him anyway," and Tommy offering precisely that. Anyway. Despite everything around them.
And also, it's because of everything Buck is – that's the one part that isn't "anyway" but "because." Buck's to others often "annoying tendencies" (it's how they react, what they say) was never a factor in Tommy's fear. Tommy's eyes say it every time he looks at Buck: He adores him. For all his flaws and patterns and moments of madness.
So, yes. I'm having a lot of emotions, and now I'm off to channel them into fanfiction because they have nowhere else to go.

Ok wait is there actually a pilot at Harbor named Melton, or has this mysterious man just emerged via fic as a fanon staple? Here for it either way.

Melton is a real character. He is in 7x03 and he is the guy that Hen talks to when she arrives at harbor. He has an IMDb credit for that episode, played by Thomas Hobson.

a list of everything buck baked:
i made a list of everything buck baked in 8x07 and wanted to do an updated version since he baked more after that and because i'm a little bit insane. this is likely not 100% accurate but pretty close, i think. maybe someone will find this interesting :)
8x07:
1 baked alaska (can take anywhere from 4-9 hours total to make)
11 loaves (lemon, walnut, pumpkin assortments)
lemon crinkle cookies* (in the background on the counter when maddie and chim visit; it's not explicitly said that they're lemon crinkle cookies but it's my guess)
batches of chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, and peanut butter cookies (baking with jee)
baked brie
garlic bread
baked ziti
bread pudding
note: this episode establishes that buck's baking is connected to him missing tommy/wanting to call him but trying to keep himself from doing so.
8x08:
a loaf of plain bread
two mini loves of some flavour and variety
scones (definitely raisin and possibly chocolate scones with chocolate chips but they could also be big muffins. hard to tell. i paused on the scene a million different times. they’re something though lool).
note: these are in the basket of baked goods buck brings over to eddie's when he runs out of flour at home and wants to bake more (we don't see it but he says that he wants to make snickerdoodles).
8x10:
protein chocolate chip cookies
8x11:
a basket of (possibly assorted) muffins or loaves (in hand when he comes to maddie's at the start of the ep. don't know where he would've baked these since he hadn't unpacked but it's okay. logistics don't matter lool)
banana muffins (we don’t see them or him making them but he tells jee that he’ll bake them for breakfast)
banana bread*
note: here we see him in the process of baking during his talk with maddie. it's not explicitly stated to be banana bread that he's making but based on my baking expertise (haha) and the ripe bananas + the foil loaf pans on the counter i think it likely is. either way, he’s baking something.
8x16:
crumpets (technically these aren't baked but i'm counting them anyway)
all in all -- A LOT of baking and A LOT of flour. love a thread that spans multiple episodes. the end <3

kenny talking about bucktommy and lou post 7x06
#bucktommy#this lends weight to the argument that Tommy was not 'outing' Buck by not pointing out the soot on his face#all that the rest of the 118 saw was Buck happy#and that was all that mattered

First Date Jitters (Let's Try This Again)
I think I was tagged in a writing thing recently, but I haven't really felt like writing for fandom the past couple of weeks but, after watching all the Buck and Tommy scenes last night, this popped into my head.
This is just a snippet, it's not finished but enjoy a preview of Buck and Tommy's first date after making the relationship official.
A knock at the door. Buck, making grooves in the floor with his pacing, stops dead in his tracks - eyes locked on the entrance. His heart pounds in his chest as butterflies make figure eights in his stomach, making his heart swoop. He must take too long because there's another knock, a little louder this time. Clearing his throat, he squeaks out, “Y-yeah, coming.” He swallows hard as he drags himself over, feet leaden weights at the ends of his legs. He takes a deep, steadying breath and swings the front door open. The second he does he can't help the smile that blooms on his lips. Tommy stands outside, wearing a soft smile along with a flowy black linen top, a black muscle tank underneath, and a pair of dark wash jeans that hugged his curves beautifully. Stunning blue-grey eyes crinkle at the corners, showing off the beautiful maturity of Tommy’s slightly older age. No, he wasn’t old, but at forty, he shows more maturity in his features than Buck currently does. He has to swallow down the ferocious longing that coils in his gut. “H-hey, Tommy.” He says shyly, reaching out to loop a finger in his belt loop so that he can pull him closer; he can feign confidence with the best of him. Tommy lets himself be pulled in until they’re only a few inches apart. Hesitating for a moment so quick Buck could blink and he’d miss it, Tommy leans in and brushes Buck’s mouth with his own. Those large hands Buck is coming to adore reach out and settle at his hips, big thumbs rubbing soothing circles as Tommy gazes at him. “H-hi.” Fuck, he’s already said that. The older man chuckles softly and says back, “Hi. Are you ready?” There’s so much mirth in his body language that Buck feels himself relax, all the way to the tip of his toes. They’re going on a date. He’s going on a date with possibly the sexiest man he’s ever met. His man. His boyfriend. The word, even saying it in his head, sends a swooping sensation through him and the giddiness makes him shiver. “Uh- yeah. Just, let me grab my phone and stuff.” Reluctantly Buck releases Tommy’s belt loop and steps away, turning to the kitchen where his phone, keys, and wallet, sit on the kitchen counter. “Ready.” He beams once he’s back in front of Tommy before shuffling them both out the door, hastily locking it behind them.

Is there a reason that their uniforms, both formal and everyday are navy but their turnouts are black? Is that bugging anyone else? Just me?
Air Ops flightsuits are a different blue altogether
These are the stupid things that keep me up at night.

Apparently Lou just followed Corinne Massiah, the actress that plays May. I was already convinced that we’d be seeing Tommy again because of the open storyline and the fact that the official 9-1-1 account still follows Lou, but this feels like genuine evidence that he’s back on set. He usually follows people after he’s worked with them/interacted and I can’t think of any other reason he’d follow Corinne other than being back on set together in some capacity.

Lou recently followed Corinne on IG. Man has a habit of following people after he films with them. So can we please chill now? Tommy is coming back and by the sounds of it, relatively early in the season.

ferris wheel on fire by newtkelly
cover art by @thetouchof118
Chapters: 1/3
Fandom: 9-1-1 (TV)
Rating: Explicit
Relationships: Evan “Buck” Buckley/Tommy Kinard
Summary:
A tenth of what keeps California running hails from the hearth of this modern relic. It’s legitimately riveting. The scale of it is nearly unfathomable.
How is it possible that Tommy's the same age as this monolith of the nuclear age? It jars him, it humbles him. Both of them have spent forty years going and going, not stopping for breath.
—
Tommy and Evan find each other again. All it takes is a power plant, a corrupt fire chief, and a couple of exes.
