We have fantastic news: we have collected our first jeans from #donatedenim campaign in Glasgow! Amazed by support and all the lovely messages that still keep coming ☺️ What next? Regardless of the state of the donated jeans, first of all all of them will be washed. We ask to donate clean jeans, but we always wash them again - that’s simple hygiene. Then we’ll sort them into piles depending on their colour and stretch factor. And then we’ll cut them into pieces. Larger pieces will be joined together in new patchwork fabric and will later become garments. Smaller pieces will be saved to be turned into our signature fluffy details, back pockets will be cut as well and will become interior pieces. And the rest (belts, heavy side seams, pocket lining, tiny tiny offcuts) will become stuffing for our home accessories. Have a pair of jeans in the Glasgow area? Let us know! Labour of love: we use ALL the offcuts to create these #zerowaste floor cushions and door stoppers. Both outside and inside is denim waste. The bits we can’t use for the garments, we turn into little interior pieces. And the rest? Gets shredded and goes inside. #toptipstuesday: How to shop better? We know that dressmaking is not for everyone, and many will argue that small brands are more expensive than mass market. We also understand that the idea of secondhand clothes is not acceptable for some people. So could you reduce the impact if you still shop on the high street? Start reading the labels: look for composition of the garments and try to avoid mixed blends. If cotton and polyester separately could be recycled, mixed blends can’t (the technology is still a work in progress and is very expensive). If a garment says “50% wool, 30% cotton, 20% polyester”, don’t be fooled by the higher numbers of natural fibres - this garment is destined to the landfill. In best case scenario it will become some sort of insulation. Stick to 100%: doesn’t matter the fibre, but pure polyester has a higher chance to be recycled than a mixed blend with less polyester. I had a little experiment last year: in 2020 I didn’t buy a single new item of clothing! The whole year - nothing! And not because the shops were closed and I don’t exactly enjoy online shopping, no. I just desired I could do without it and I did. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t get any new clothes, quite the opposite - I have actually designed a few items for our very own fashion line. Working with a limited stock of fabrics, pushing imagination to create upcycled garments. I have discovered new ways of dressmaking and styling that work for me. If you compare the price of a ready-made top to the fabric they used, you’ll be shocked. When buying your fabrics you can decide how much money you are willing to spend and find either gorgeous organic fabrics (average price of 1m of organic or linen is about £10-15), or even hunt for vintage fabrics in charity shops and get amazing bargains for even less! Why bother with upcycling? It’s so much work, why?! Because somebody has to 🤷🏻‍♀️ Endless buy-buy-buy new-new-new, where do you think it’s all going? To the magic recycling plant? In the U.K. the magic recycling plant is called A LANDFILL IN AFRICA. Yes, all the stuff that charity shops can’t sell, all the “recycling” places that take in your old clothes - all of this lands in Africa, it’s not recycled. That extra pair of jeans that you’ll wear once, that dress that didn’t even fit in the first place but you’ve got on Christmas sale - most of it is destined to the landfill. Want to make a change?
