Something speedy and mindless for fun~

@missionspacecat Yeah! this is all hand drawn roughs. I haven’t worked in flash on my own in forever so this is me trying to reintroduce myself to it. Last I worked in flash, it was on a show called “Rocket Monkeys” and there were boards and character builds. On there, I didn’t need to rough it out to this extreme since I could usually just use & adjust the build with all its symbols.

For my work flow, I started with an idea (a cutesy kind of over the top wink), and then plotted out the main keys.

In this video you can see me work on this chunk. I started with the first key pose, then the last, and worked my way in on breakdowns(BD). The first BD in the gif is an antic down, the second is the high extreme for the arc, and the third is the low extreme overshoot before is pops back into the final key. Then I cleaned up those roughs to maintain mass, to plot the cheek, jaw, ear, and center line.

Then I moved onto the features, thinking about the stretch and squash of the face. On the high arc BD, the eyes, brows, and the mouth open the most (stretch), and on the antic and overshoot, they close the most (squash). These roughs were done also to solidify the head angles from left to right as well as angling up and down. You can watch a video here.

Then I started working on tweens and even cleaner roughs. Partly because my other roughs had a billion lines to define the shape which is no fun for cleaning it up in symbols and also to procrastinate on making the symbols OTL

You can see the first  chunk is really smooth but the last is poppy. Thats because I have a drawing on every 2 frames in the beginning and a drawing on every 4 on the end. Sorry, no video from here on out! D:

But it’s still pretty stiff. I started lasso selecting chunks of my drawings and shifting them around to push the pose. Most significantly, I grabbed the neck and head and pivoted it forwards and back from the clavicle and I grabbed the whole drawings and brought them up and down to have the body react to the antic, high arc, over shoot, and settle. Here’s the difference with some altered timing:

And thats my messy workflow! There isnt One way to approach animation and it changes depending on scene, but my favourite is definitely pose to pose instead of straight ahead. I didn’t really get into explaining spacing and timing in this, but if anyone would like me to, shoot me a message!
