THE HEAT WAS STRONG FOR A SUMMER DAY and yet Reiner knew the truth. It was a dance and song, a rhythm they both moved to ever since puberty set in and their friendship had become something else. For the most part it was unsaid, too afraid to make waves, too afraid to disrupt the status quo, and in Reiner's case too afraid of what others would say.

They were alone though, his mother wasn't present to breathe expectations down his back, people at school weren't looking onward, ready to spread news through the town like a wildfire where it'd eventually burn across his childhood home and ignite explanations and fears he wasn't quite ready to face. When it was just the two of them like how he preferred most of the time, he could get lost in the fantasy. Lean into his best friend, unnecessary physical contact that was so natural for them both.

BERTHOLDT HAD A FAMILIAR SCENT, A FAMILIAR GRIP. When arms bumped it was magnetic, like two halves coming together in a way that was meant to be and so when Reiner leans in and barely ghosts his lips along his friend's jaw it's a test. A taste of what he truly wanted, of what he hoped Bertholdt wanted. Basking in the light of his best friend's glow, light that he hoped he'd spend every waking moment in, together in all the ways that they wanted with no fear and no chains binding them down.

Until that day though, he could steal moments, and watch as Bertholdt blushes so sweetly and gets riled up from the smallest of touches. This was their spot, a hidden away alcove near the park, trees were their veils when they were there. A spot that was just their own since they were kids. Here, he could make his beloved rive.

" Bertl. " His name drops from his tongue like honey, sweet and heated, lips moving back to marking Bertholdt's jaw, following a pattern he knew by heart now. " If it's so hot we could always shed some layers. Will that make you less embarrassed, or more? " He asks, ghosting his finger tips along the hem of the other's shirt, digits barely grazing along exposed flesh.

" Or we can just sit here and pretend like I don't want to touch you everywhere. Your choice. "
