My favorite thing is when Xichen says something like “I haven’t seen you this excited in a long time” and Wangji is just standing there with the straightest of faces.

The person vs. the persona in MDZS/ CQL/ TU

Another scene that I love in CQL / TU is the scene when Jin Guangyao finally understands that it has been Nie Huaisang engineering his downfall, hiding all these years in plain sight right under Jin Guangyao’s nose, pretending not to know anything, to be fearful, lazy, dumb, and completely incompetent. 

And when Jin Guangyao gives Nie Huaisang this public acknowledgment of his real talents and competence: a daring, brave, extremely smart and ruthless strategist with absolutely superb acting skills, — Nie Huaisang stands there, shaking and sweating, in a state close to shock, for a long moment, before regaining his ability to put the mask back on. 

It made me think that this is one of the aspects of MDZS/ CQL/ TU that makes it so attractive to me. Two people demonstrating how a “real person vs. persona” complexity can be navigated. And they are pitted against each other! And we see how they are perceived by different other characters. Like for Nie Mingjue something that can change skins so quickly must by default be a snake, and dealt with accordingly. And poor Lan Xichen, whose tragedy is believing “I knew he had to lie and pretend, but he has had a hard life, and without him and his skills of acting we possibly wouldn’t have won the war, but I know his true self, with me he is not playing a role…” - and then being hit with a realization that with him his A-Yao always has been playing a role, just for him, and there is no way to know when he was sincere, or acting, or strategically disclosing something authentic to use it later to solidify the whole persona… 

After that scene with the revelation of Nie Huaisang’s role in Jin Guangyao’s downfall at the Guangyin Temple, I felt like re-watching the whole series, looking for possible moments where the “real” Nie Huaisang would show through. Where he stands, what he looks at, what he may be seeing, so what he knows, what he has to infer, for what he must rely on guessing… this is the “reading in” process, that makes the process of engaging with a work of art, be that a book or a movie, so, well, engaging. 

And then it hit me. It is exactly the same thing that the real person fans do with the footage of their celebrities doing something. Trying to find the real person in the cracks in the performance of the public persona. I call it “the quest for truth”. And it have brought on a very long thought. I will write it up in a few upcoming posts.
