I read some bagginshield angst and the comfort bit/love confession wasn’t enough to console me so I must share more angst:
the company drinking around a fire after kili has gone off somewhere with tauriel — thorin angrily mocking the elves and not realizing as he goes off more and more that he’s nearing awfully close to describing hobbits
bilbo’s quiet at first, slowly twisting the wildflower thorin had shyly given him earlier that day
but bilbo baggins is never quiet for long so while thorin is naming off dreadful things about the elves to make the others laugh, bilbo pipes up, “you don’t find their pointed ears too pretty, I’d wager”
Thorin snorts. “Dainty things to match their dainty hands,” he says.
“Nor their smooth cheeks,” says Bilbo.
“Distasteful,” agrees Thorin. “To think a dwarf such as my nephew would find some something like that agreeable is beneath him.”
There are a few murmurs of agreement, but the company has quieted a little. Some have started catching on.
“And their love of nature,” says Bilbo.
“Thorin,” warns Balin, but Thorin thunders on.
“Is that what you call their ‘speaking to trees,’ Master Baggins? Should I whisper to the flowers as well?”
He goes to take a sip of ale and startles when something light hits his forehead. When he pulls back, a wildflower falls from his face and into the cup.
He looks up, and Bilbo has a light-lipped smile on. “Well,” he says, “the pointy eared, beardless, tree speaker is going to bed. I hope you find some happiness for your nephew in the bottom of your cup.”
“Bilbo,” Thorin starts, but Bilbo’s already spinning on his heel, cheeks hot.
“Don’t you mean ‘halfling’?”

i kinda love how big of a deal it is that rumi allows mira into her bedroom. the way mira knocks first and waits for rumi to answer. the way mira tries to play it off but ends up sounding like nothing means more to her in the world than being granted entry to rumi’s threshold. this is a hard boundary and both she and zoey are well familiar with it. i’ve thought a lot about how difficult it must have been to live with two people that you can’t ever let see you with even an inch of bare arm, how you’d have to check your appearance thoroughly before leaving your private space, how your private space can turn into something of a prison when it’s the only space that you’re allowed to actually relax in—and even then, never completely; the lock i imagine is on the bathroom door, the way your heart would leap (and not in a good way) every time there came a knock at your door. and like they say about old habits. at what point would rumi’s fight or flight response to having somebody coming into her private space when she’s actually got nothing more to hide subside, and let her just enjoy the moment with them?

Minotaur is not a species
The Minotaur was named that because he was the son of King Minos. Anyone with a bull head has to be named after their dad, like the Kyletaur or something.

Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

I already said this in my Day 7 post, but I had such a blast for Sonamy Week 2025! It was so much fun getting to create pieces for my darling hedgehogs, but I'm also so giddy from all the lovely works of art that others have contributed this year, too! I'll be reblogging them throughout the next week so I can savor Sonamy Week a little longer 😉 (And remember, you can always submit pieces late! It's never too late to join in on the Sonamy fun!)
Thank you to the organizers @lazorbeanz @emistations and @chinchilla010 for continuing the Sonamy Week tradition 💖💙💖 Can't wait to see what's in store for 2026!

I think it's a common misconception that domesticating animals is somewhat like enslaving them. It really is more of a symbiotic relationship. No wild animal would have willingly put up with early humans if they didn't get something out of it. Wolves wouldn't have stayed with us and become dogs if they weren't getting food and safety out of it. Many large herbivores that are now domesticated could and would have easily trampled their early human captors or broken their enclosures open if they didn't have a reason to stay. Sometimes individual animals still do if we don't give them what they need.
The animals that have stayed with us for thousands of years have evolved to cooperate with us better. Dogs have additional facial muscles around their eyes that wolves lack in order to mimic human facial expressions. Sheep grow their wool perpetually while their wild counterparts don't because a bigger fleece means they're more likely to be allowed to breed and be kept around. Domestic dairy cows produce much more milk than wild bovine species and domestic hens lay more eggs. Do you know how energy costly producing eggs or milk is for an animal? It's pretty intense! They wouldn't be able to do that if we hadn't given them the food and safety from predators and the elements to.
And we really need to show these animals respect and gratitude for what they give us by taking excellent care of them. They gave up a lot to be with us, often including the means to take care of themselves in the wild. That's a huge reason why I'm not against using animal products, but I hate factory farming. They are still living, breathing creatures with needs and feelings. They deserve a comfortable life and, when the time comes, a humane death.
