DAY THIRTY-ONE: Etho!

gosh, what an adventure! i'm really happy i got to participate in hermit-a-day may this year, it's my first time doing a big challenge like this and actually making it all the way through. it's also sort of my first time posting my art here! i've had a blast, and i'm so glad i get to end on one of my all-time favourite hermits.

now onto the actual art! i wanted to go big, end the month with a bang, and i decided on creating something that would pay homage to some of my favourite pokemon media of all time -- the pokemon adventures manga!

i ended up going pretty crazy with the halftones, which was a lot of fun :-) i did a lot of research, trying to figure out how i wanted to display the characters, before settling on a mix between mine and the official style.

the final image is a reference to a really beautiful chapter title piece starring Yellow: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/PS043#/media/File:PS043.png definitely worth looking at <3

Remember "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" ? I feel like there's been a distancing from the "reduce" and "reuse" part and a favoritism towards "recycle" by corporate American.

Capitalism can still thrive with recycling in the mix. You buy Plastic Thing 1, throw it away after one use, and they take that and recycle it into Plastic Thing 2 and sell it back to you. All while continuing to harm the environment.

Reusing puts a damper on things. They can't sell you Plastic Thing 2 when you're still using Plastic Thing 1. Plastic forks, for example- there is literally no reason why you can't reuse plastic forks more than once (aside from maybe microplastics, but it's too late for that)

Reducing is the one everyone wants to ignore. Just don't buy Plastic Thing 1. You don't need Plastic Thing 1. Pick up a set of metal forks and use those for years. Convenience is killing the planet

look I'm a disability studies scholar so I know why people are like this. but. people really do get so pressed about the dumbest shit. why do you care if someone has multiple people in their head? why do you care if someone is existing with a mobility aid in your line of sight? why do you care if someone takes a couple extra seconds to formulate a sentence? even if you don't believe that someone is legitimately disabled (which is bad on its own. but still). what do you lose by just taking people at face value? and what do you gain by living life as an angry little ass all the time?

And finally, some light is shed on Ren's ear pieces! Having two sets of ears means he's always been a little more sensitive to sound, so Doc designs him some specialized earplug-type hearing aids to make hearing more tolerable for him :]
