104-3132 - Pillo purple rooms

Here is my first sketch done in Manchester at the self-catering place where we stayed – a 35 min walk from our daughters flat. The place was fine – bit sparse on the furniture front and with very carefully labelled crockery and cutlery (giving me the impression that people nick it!). 104-3131 - Royal Pavilion Gardens

This sketch was done on our last full day in Hove/Brighton starting with a visit to Art in the Park (in St. Anne’s Well Gardens, Hove). Then lunch from Pompoko…where there was nowhere to sit so we sat in the park – and I sketched this (I used washi tape to mask the edges for a change). 104-3129 - Hove beach huts

On this day we made a visit to the Hove Museum of Creativity – where we saw an excellent photo exhibition called “Beside The Sea: Photographs by JJ Waller and Martin ParrParr”, plus a small collection of random crafts and art. 104-3128 - Bodiam castle

On this day we made a trip to Bodiam Castle. I am sure I visited there as a child – we lived relatively nearby after all – but I have no recollection of going there. Bodiam is like a fairytale version of a castle – a perfect square with circular towers in each corner. On our first day in Hove we took a walk along the sea front into Brighton, passing through George Street, visiting the Boat Museum and a traditional hall of mirrors. Here is the last sketch I did in Suffolk (before we headed to Hove and Brighton after seeing my sister to say goodbye) – a quick drawing as I sat next to my mum outside her room in Laxfield House. Here is another sketch done in the square in Bildeston – this time looking in the opposite direction from the one I did on 17 May. We checked out of “top house” and had some time to kill before we went to see my mum (who get’s up late), so we sat in the square and enjoyed the sun. Tue-20-May-2025

104-3123 - Spoons again

On this day we went into Bury St. Edmunds to buy a coat for my wife’s birthday and had lunch first. Wetherspoons is cheap and simple so we picked that – we sat in almost the same spot as when we were there in December 2022 (see sketch No.69-2267), so I sketched the same scene. My sketching style hasn’t changed a bit…though I think I captured the scene better this time? Mon-19-May-2025

104-3122 - Clock tower Bildeston

Here is a sketch of the clock tower (which reminds me of the clock tower square in Thimphu…which I probably sketched too) in Bildeston – built in 1864. This came out very flat…I guess because of the grey day. When I looked at the tower another day, the shadows looked much stronger. Sun-18-May-2025

When I drew this I had missed a few days of sketching and reminded myself that even the most mundane subject will do for a sketch – the important thing is to take some time off to focus on a bit of creativity. This battered aluminium flask used to belong to my daughter, but these days it lives in the side pocket of my bag. Always useful to stay hydrated but also so that I can fill my water…
