Kentridge on Tearing
William Kentridge is a South American artist known to produce work that varies between film, drawing, theatre and opera. With a primary focus on drawing. His work sometimes combined elements of all these practices and therefore he produces installations with multi aspects. Some of his works include “The Nose” (2007), “William Kentridge, Il cavaliere di Toledo” (2012), and a portfolio of prints called “Ubu Tells the Truth”.
One of Kentridge’s pieces called “The Nose” (2007), Kentridge explores concepts incorporated into an opera which a short story is based off of. For this piece, Kentridge has created both a lecture and a performance as well as an open-ended installation that interacts with the audience. The whole project introduces the audience to story of a guy who is trying to find his nose and ends with the nose back on the guy’s face.
It was very interesting to see Kentridge’s projects so heavily based on telling stories. Moreover, it really draws me in that Kentridge is able to create an “environment” for for his audiences in order to further bring them into the story. Kentridge’s work made me understand the essence of interacting with more than one of the five senses when showcasing art. In Kentridge’s case, he showcased his art by interacting with the audience’s hearing and visual appeal. Moreover, his interactive installation creates an environment for the audience which draws them in and immerses them with an experience. I feel that the ability to create such artwork is definitely very valuable as an artist.

Ni’Ja Whitson CCA Performance
“A Meditation on Tongues” was a performance created that was an with adaptation of “Tongues Untied” (1989) by Marlon T. Riggs’. The intention of this performance piece was to represent gender non conformity, bodies and dialogues of race as well as racism and homophobia. It centres around the concept of  lesbian storytelling around queerness and explores what does re-embodying masculinity looks like.
The combination of movement and music in this piece was really able to present emotion and exploration on the topic of homophobia. The music itself was interesting in a way that it was a mixture of modern pop music as well as almost as if tribal music. It is unclear how the sounds have been produced and at times the audience is able to hear a few verses of words, but other time it seems to either be mumbling of sounds or just scattered sounds produced by instruments. When the music pauses at the time, then we are focused on the silence of the room and focused on sounds of footsteps, breathing or screams produced live by the actor. The switch between sounds played by the speaker and sounds produced live by the performer was definitely an interesting shift. It intersects between reality and virtual sounds and therefore fully captures the audience’s attention as we listen carefully to both sounds of reality and virtuality.
The movement by the actors are very much powerful and exerts emotion through every move. It interacts sometimes with the sounds played in the background but other time with the emotion of the viewers and the actors. Sometimes there is rhythm in the actors movements, other times there is power and other times there is a certain softness to it. The lighting during the performance was able able to highlight the actor’s movements by focusing directly on them to create a dramatic effect. Moreover, the projections towards the end then creates an interesting shift towards a virtual world, the audience is then brought into a virtual video projected in darkness.
Overall, the performance was interesting to me, but I feel as if it was a bit hard for me to comprehend without deeper research into the meaning of the piece. However, I feel that the play between reality and virtual reality was interesting in a way that created mixed sensations for the audience. It would shift from loud music to reality noises of breathing or from live performances to virtual projections. The sudden shift in environment definitely brought out a dramatic element to the performance, which was why it was a huge success.

Final Idea
For my final project, I wanted to create a mixed animation and video of everyday objects. I want to be able to project it on more than one screen in order to show the interaction with space
