Indian Artform-Sanjhi art
Sanjhi art comes from Uttar Pradesh, northern India. It was first practised in Mathura and Vrindavan. Sanjhi is derived from 'sanjh' or dusk since the rangolis were uncovered at sunset with chanting. The stencils are constructed from recycled or handmade paper and use certain metal scissors. Some typical motifs are peacocks, bullock carts, horses, cows, butterflies, and trees. Traditionally, Sanjhi themes were used to decorate the walls and floors of temples. It was used to make ritualistic and ceremonial rangolis in Lord Krishna temples.
Sanjhi's exquisite patterns and intricate image motifs make it so beautiful. The majority of the artwork consists of stories about Krishna. A few artisans also practised Sanjhi during the Mughal era, but they were based on different themes.
