KOCOUM IS NOT A FUCKING VILLIAN

“Kocoum is a character and minor antagonist from Disney’s 1995 film Pocahontas”. No. Stop right the fuck there.

Kocoum is not an antagonist. An antagonist is a villain, the bad guy, the douchecanoe that fucks everything up for the hero. Kocoum is none of these things. Radcliffe is. He’s the fuckwit. Kocoum? No, Kocoum’s a badass.

Let’s look at Kocoum’s story:

Kocoum looks to be around his 20’s, and is head-badass-in-charge of the warriors. He and his friends and fellow warriors have been at war with a tribe called the Massawomecks for an uncertain amount of time. When the story opens, they’ve just gotten home – the chief is literally giving Kocoum his honors as we meet him. From the way the chief talks, the battle has been hard. Kocoum has put on a strong face, but he clearly looks tired when Kekata (the spiritual authority of the tribe) paints a bear paw on his chest. Poor dude looks in serious need of some good food and hard sleep.

We then see Kocoum has asked for the chief’s daughter to marry him. Easy to see why, Pocahontas is gorgeous. And the bro legit loves her to pieces. But Pocahontas don’t want no marriage yet. Dude must have had a big fucking sad over that.

Then lo-and-fucking-behold, a ship arrives with weird ass pale guys on it. Chief Powhatan is all “what the fuck is this shit? Kocoum, get your bros and go check it out”. And that’s all they’re told to do – so see what’s up. Not attack, not kill. Just watch. Kocoum has to be all “are you fucking kidding me?” but gets his buddies anyway.

Well wouldn’t you know Kocoum can’t catch a break? Not only are these guys fucking up everything they touch, but the fat bastard with bird legs orders his men to shoot at them. So they protect themselves, like any other sane person would do. Then to make shit EVEN WORSE, Namontak gets shot. Bro’s bound to be one of Kocoum’s friends, so dude saves Namontak’s life and runs them home.

So now Kocoum has crazy men with guns in his back yard, his love has rejected him, it looks like they’re on the verge of war AGAIN, and now his friend is hurt and Kekata doesn’t know how to fix him. Fan-fucking-tastic, isn’t it? What’s more, Pocahontas hasn’t been around much, so who knows what she’s getting into? (Hint: making it up with John Smith, that’s what)

The next time we see Kocoum, the chief’s ordered him to go play babysitter. Fine and dandy, right? Except Pocahontas isn’t around when he looks for her, and the girl’s best friend says she hasn’t seen here. Patience of a saint, Kocoum tells the friend to tell Pocahontas she can’t keep running off. So obviously the bro’s at his wits end, and worried, but it’s whatever.

Then lookie here, lookie there – some allies of the tribe have showed up for war. Pocahontas runs in as they get there and Kocoum tells her (with no subtle pride) that they have enough warriors to beat the white guys. She doesn’t look happy though, and he’s confused.

Later on, the friend comes and gets Kocoum cuz she thinks Pocahontas is in trouble. Bro didn’t know, but she ran off to meet John Smith. So now it’s Super Kocoum to the fucking rescue. Except, you know, when he finds here, she’s sucking face with one of the people he’s supposed to kill. This is where Kocoum’s fatal flaw comes in – through jealousy or racism, he flips shit and attacks John Smith. Pocahontas, like a smart person, tries to break them up. And just when Kocoum seems ready to listen, a fuckwit named Thomas has arrived, taken Kocoum for a villain, and shoots him where he stands. Kocoum gets fucking SHOT DEAD by a novice for doing what he thought was right – follow the chiefs orders to keep Pocahontas safe, and away from the white guys.

THAT IS NOT THE STORY OF A VILLIAN.
