Self-Critique Final Project
I wanted to create an ephemeral piece in video art format. I thought it was interesting to create a self portrait outside of the mediums of painting and photography. Even though, in a small way I incorporated 2D art with hand-drawn paper moths. I personally, have a very hard time painting a self portrait and I wanted to explore a small facet of myself. I love the night time, and I adore and identify with moths. I think I achieved all of my goals with this piece. And the only issue I have with it is I think I should have added a third scene that was repeated throughout the film. But I also feel that just two pieces kept it abstract. So I am torn by the final product. I wonder how my audience will react.

Final Project Ideation

Here are some of the paper moths I created for part of the video. These are for the scenes were more and more moths gradually cover me because “I am a moth.” A self-portrait in which I identify with being a moth. The other scenes I filmed in the car and they represent my love for the night. I think I am going to either title the video For the Love of Night: A Self Portrait OR Atropa Belladonna: A Self Portrait.

Artist Presentation: Janine Antoni
Janine Antoni was born in Freeport Bahamas In 1964. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and earned her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989. She won the MacArthur Fellowship Award, Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts, US & Canada. And she was nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize. She exhibited some of her most prominent works in the Sandra Gering Gallery in New York and the Anthony D’ Offey gallery in London. Besides performance art she works in sculpture and photography.
“The creative process is a mystery, something that seems to happen on the periphery of thought”-Antoni

She typically uses her body in unconventional ways to make her sculptures and she incorporates this into her performance art.
“It’s through the body that I reach my unconscious—through dance, meditation and yoga. The body holds memory differently than the mind. For me, creativity is about unlocking memories within the body. It’s also about thinking with the body.” -Antoni
Lick and Lather(1993-1994)
-Busts of her head made out of chocolate that she licked and busts of her head created out of soap that she lathered.
-She thought the concept was more interesting/enticing for the audience than the actual act of manipulating these materials.
-Inspired by Feminist art of the 70′s and 80′s
-Strange things happened with these chocolate sculptures, three different people bit off the noses of some of her chocolate sculptures. She describes this as violent.
-Similar work: Gnaw

Slumber(1993)
-she would sleep and a machine would record and display her rapid eye movement from her dreams. When she woke up she would weave a blanket according to the pattern of her dreams out of her night gown.
-Create an artifact out of her dreams
-about vulnerability and the subconscious.
-People respond to her differently in different cultures

The most interesting part of her work that inspires me and resonates with me are her concepts. I am first and foremost a watercolor painter but I think her work about vulnerability and the female body/feminist aspects of her work, also her work with “identity” is very inspiring. Her ideas about reaching the unconscious is something that work with in my own personal practice as well.

Loving Care (1993)
-Performance piece where she painted the gallery floor by dipping her head in a bucket of dye. She said the position of crouching the way she did to paint the floor made her vulnerable and the claiming of the entire space gave her power.
-She became the “mop” instead of welding one.
-Klien’s Anthropometries. Ownership of the body.
“Performance wasn't something that I intended to do. I was doing work that was about process, about the meaning of the making, trying to have a love-hate relationship with the object. I always feel safer if I can bring the viewer back to the making of it. I try to do that in a lot of different ways, by residue, by touch, by these processes that are basic to all of our lives...that people might relate to in terms of process, everyday activities— bathing, eating, etc.” -Antoni

Antoni urinating out of a copper gargoyle she crafted herself. Gargoyles represent “the mythical shadow of our psyche.” She utilized copper to relate to piece to architectural copper pipes. She is seen on top of The Chrysler building in New York City. Conduit (2009)

Project #4 Self Critique
I think my project turned out well. It isn't visually interesting but I think that adds to the parameters of the assignment because this work is not about imagery.Just about touch. I think plastic was good idea for this project, especially black plastic so the items are completely hidden. Feel through the Plastic is fun because it's like a mystery game where you have to guess the object. Each "pocket" has a different item, and I think a lot of them will be difficult to guess, which adds to the experience. I have the sculptures arranged in a way they interact with the space of the gallery.

Project #4 Ideation Installation
I want this installation to revolve around touch. I am going to include objects for my audience to interact with such as home-made slime, rice, dry beans, petals, and other tactile materials. I want to build a structure to create a unique experience.
I will either use bags for the materials or boxes to create a sculpture in the corner of the gallery.
...
I decided to use black plastic to create my final project. I don't want my audience to access the materials visually. The final piece is called Feel Through the Plastic. Here is my plan for set up in the corner of the gallery. Two pieces on the floor two on the wall.

Questions on “Wake Up and Smell Your City”
Do you believe that our sense of smell is a human sense that is neglected in our modern society today, like the author mentions?
How might art that appeals to different senses, senses besides visual, reach and connect to a larger audience? Is there a stronger impact?

Self-Critique Project #3 Video
I thought that my film turned out better than I expected. I went for a very minimalist approach with the shots when I was designing the story board. I used jump cuts because I wanted each shot to feel like a picture, like a good memory. The title of my work is true and false at the same time. “Ode to Us: Then and Now.” We never existed in the 1950s but I attempted to recreate it. Juxtaposing these shots with colored shots. The editing was subconsciously inspired by two of my favorite films Memento by Christopher Nolan and Heartbeats/Les Amours Imaginaries by Xavier Dolan. The only thing I am concerned about is the pattern in which the shots appear, there is a very specific pattern I used and I hope it won’t be confusing for my audience. Overall, I am quite proud of my film.

Project#3 Ideation (Video)
I am going to create a short film. There are going to be two characters in my film, my boyfriend Kyle and I. The prompt that I got was the word OLD. I am going to do alternating shots that juxtapose each other. For example, I will do a black and white shot of the two of us sitting across from each other at a table. We are going to be dressed in 1950′s attire reading newspapers and having a meal together. In the next shot we are going to wearing modern clothing and the shot will be in color, while we both look at our phones. The overall concept has to do with abstracted time. That the two of us in our relationship can exist in the past and present at the same time. Of course one will be representative of a time that neither of us have personally experienced so it will make it inaccurate, a fantasy. A fantasy that can come to life through the power of film. It will be an abstract film about the two of us together but it will have a small commentary about conflicts and new technology. The black and white scenes will address the OLD. This will be a silent film with a wordless, ambient sound mix layered over the top.
In-progress Storyboard and Props(vintage newspapers) for before filming...

Chapter 6 Questions
How does slowing down, or speeding up a film make the artifact more dynamic for its audience?
How does recorded motion through photography give the viewer a different experience versus watching a film? ( I'm specifically thinking about Woman Walking Downstairs by Edward Muybridge)

Self-Critique Project #2
I haven’t performed my piece yet because I plan on doing so in front of the class, but I predict that it will go well and that I will get my concept across to my audience. I hope that painting the mask with an array of colors will accurately represent my ideas about expressions, feelings, and emotions.
After performing I thought my piece was understood and received well by the class.

Project #2 Ideation/Process
HOW DO I FEEL?
I want to use colors in some way to represent our emotions. A lot of the expression in our faces is seen through our eyes, through the eyes is how we read someone and their thoughts and expressions, feelings and emotions. And movements in the rest of the face I want to make a performance piece in which I represent common human emotions without the use of my eyes and face. I am thinking about making three blank masks (or maybe having a previously drawn monochrome design) and painting the masks as a performance. And prompting my audience to guess which emotion I am expressing based on the manner and colors I used to paint my masks. I may incorporate sound
During the process of making this mask I had a failed attempt. I tried to use paper mache to make to mask and it just fell apart when I tried to take it off my face. I have a better idea, I have made masks for costumes before and other body pieces that I needed to be molded to my body. I just heated up thin pieces of craft foam, held them to my face for a short amount of time. Then sprayed them with modge podge so they would keep their form. I am going to do the same process for this project. I can make many masks this way if I decide to make multiple masks.
I am thinking about using pastels, oil pastels, and charcoal instead of paint

I glued colorful holographic plastic over the final product of the mask. I am only going to use one mask for my performance and I will probably incorporate a song by Yann Teirsen.

Self-Critique Project #1
I set out about 20 gift boxes with a short question inside of each gift. I think I achieved my goals for this project. I used bright colored paper so they may catch the eye of someone. I also decided to place them in places a lot of people walk by or interact with every single day. I think I achieved my goals for this temporary artwork, that exists for the single person that opens the gift and asks themselves the question inside. I liked the idea that I personally don’t actually know the fate of my little gifts, but I hope it was a nice surprise if any strangers found them.

Project #1 Ideation Process
I had a few ideas about hanging messages in trees inside of jars. “Message in a Bottle.” Now the idea I have settled on brightly colored tiny gifts, inside each gift I will install a unique message or piece of art and a message. It’s a very small piece of art that I will leave behind. I am still contemplating specific public places for them to interrupt society, and maybe bring surprise to whomever finds and opens the gifts. I am making the gifts out of origami boxes.
Questions that I brainstormed for my boxes:
Where is your favorite place on earth thus far? What do you like the most about yourself? How do you feel about your life right now? What do you enjoy doing the most in your life? What makes you happy? What obstacles must you overcome today? What is the best question you could ask yourself right now? What is your greatest talent? What are the main motivations in your life? What is the most important goal in your life right now? Do you love yourself? What are your favorite things to do? Who is the most important person in your life right now? What qualities do you admire most in others? Did you know you can have any qualities you wish to have? When are you at your best? What is your best source of inspiration? What is your favorite experience on earth? What actions help your self-confidence? What is the most loving action a person could take? What do you value the most in your home? What is the most valuable thing in your life? What do you value the most about your life up until this point in time? What is your favorite memory? What is your earliest memory? What is your greatest fantasy? Did you know that you deserve the best? What do you value the most in a friendship? What do you value the most in a relationship? What do you care about most deeply? How do you benefit the people you love? What things fill you with passion about life? What makes you laugh? What do you love about today? How can you make the world a better place? What do you look forward to tomorrow? Are you taking the best actions towards your goals in life? How will your friends remember you? What is the “mark” you have made on here on Earth? How do you want to be remembered? Who do you want to see tomorrow? Who do you want to see today? What does the color blue mean to you personally? What does the color read mean to you?
