part of the reason I think it’s so sad that we collectively write so few stories about unrequited love is bc I feel like there’s very little public acknowledgment of how much it sucks to be the one somebody is in unrequited love with??? and not in a way of like, oh they’re crossing boundaries or putting expectations on me or whatever. becoming close friends with someone and then finding out they’re in love with you and you don’t love them back the same way is heartbreaking, bc a) someone you love is in pain and there is literally nothing you can do about it, and b) it usually means that whether you like it or not there’s going to be distance in your friendship that wasn’t there before as they try to get over you. idk man I just feel like we’ve all discussed the tragedy of loving someone who doesn’t love you back quite a lot and very rarely discuss the tragedy of finding out the way that you love someone just isn’t enough.

Anyway, Jumba Jookiba, best evil genius in the galaxy, and lovable uncle/father figure, he deserves the best.
And I refuse to see him in any other way.

Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten. I'm staying with the OG version. Thank you very much. We don't talk abt the live action one.

One thing that bothers me about the ending of the Lilo and Stitch remake (among the other things people have already rightfully complained about) is how it acts like Nani has to go to college NOW or she's lost her chance forever.
As someone who was raised by a young mother that didn't get to go to college, because she got 2 kids at 18-20, but then went to college in her early/mid 30s when me and my sister were old enough to be left home alone, it just feels really insulting.
It really adds to the harmful mindset that someone's life, especially that of women, is over if they haven't "got their life together" yet before the age of 25.
There would've been no harm in Nani delaying college for like 5-10 years, instead of abandoning her sister during the most vital years of her development only 2-3 months after already having lost her parents. Animated Nani would never.

What if I tell you that the ending of the original Lilo and Stitch was important because Nani fighting tooth and nail for custody over Lilo takes place against a history of the separation of Indigenous families? What if I tell you that the ending of the original Lilo and Stitch was important because it shows that Nani was not inherently a bad guardian, just a young overwhelmed woman who needed a support system and not punishment (just like many families esp Black and Brown single mothers do)?
And then Disney spat upon that ending for the live action remake?

here's the thing.
a young woman suddenly saddled with raising her younger sibling who ultimately has to accept that she isn't up to the task and it'd be better for her sibling to live in a stable and loving home with a family friend, leading to a bittersweet ending where the siblings remain in contact and still love each other, but must accept living apart at least for the time being, could be an interesting and compelling character.
but that character isn't nani pelekai.

nani in the original movie: i'm literally the only one who understands lilo, she's too autistic for the 2000s to handle and everyone else gives up on her or treats her like the problem. if anything happens to her i feel like i'm going to lose myself. literally everything i do in my life is so that i can keep custody of my sister and never have to have her separated from me, also this is lowkey a metaphor for colonialism
nani in the live-action movie: she'll be fine. im going to college
