Project 2 - Final
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CHALLENGE
The challenge for this project was to either rebrand a series of existing products or to create our own brand and create a series of products for that brand. I decided to create my own brand for a few reasons. Firstly, I had seen some products out in the world that I found some inspiration from. Secondly, I felt that I would have had a hard time breaking away from preexisting as I tend to have a hard time separating my own skills from what other brands utilize in their branding. Lastly, I wanted to have more creative freedom surrounding product type and target audience.
APPROACH
I started with a pretty clear vision of what branding I wanted for my series. When I decided on my product being lipgloss, I instantly thought of all the cosmetics brands that try to look as high end and expensive as possible. I remembered how intimidating that was when I first started doing makeup and I didn’t want that to be the first reaction consumers had when they saw my product. I then decided on a pretty basic vessel type that I was able to buy online. The hardest part for me was actually digitally designing that information that would be on the product. I don’t see myself as an illustrator but I wanted my brand to have cute and friendly visuals so I challenged myself to illustrate as much as I could. I ended up creating illustrations for the scent icons featured on top of the product but I ended up finding a typeface for my logo design. The colour choices came pretty easily to me as I was inspired by the fruits that the scents were taken from. The stickers were pretty easy to deal with. I was able to use my classmates cricut for the creation of the stickers. The scent stickers were perfectly printed and so were the logo stickers but, I decided to cut the stickers into a less structured shape.
OUTCOME
I have produced three differently scented lip glosses. Each tube of lipgloss has the standard logo sticker on the front that states the brand name (the logo) and the product type (scented lip gloss). On top of the tube is a sticker with an illustration of the fruit each respective tube is scented as. The stickers also each have a different coloured border around each fruit illustration that has colours that correspond to the fruit.

Project 2 - Application Phase pt.2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week I have my first 3D prototypes done. There are very small edits for me to make in terms of design. Some people have suggested adding the word for the scent and others have stated that the symbols on top are sufficient. I haven't decided if I'm going to add anything.

Project 2 - Planning
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week, I have started my planning phase. This phase, for me, was more so about figuring out the dimensions and vessel for my packaging. In terms of creative direction, I have settled on my branding aesthetic, but I am not 100% sold on the details of my labels/stickers. As I move into the creative hase, I will continue to experiment with illustration styles and shapes and colours.

This is my visual design brief the will inspire my creative direction as I move forward with this project.

Project 2 - Research pt. 2 (In-class)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last week in class we did an activity in which we were given design ideas from 3 of our classmates. Each classmate was given a style/inspirational theme to align their sketches with. This activity was helpful for me in informing my creative direction. I was lucky and was given the theme I was considering leaning into, however, it was interesting to see what other people thought.

Project 2 - Research pt. 1 (in the field)
Tumblr media
This week we went to Old Country Market - Goats on Roof in Coombs. We were given 4 questions to answer so here's my research:
What does the packaging tell you about the brand?
The packaging tells the consumer so much about the product. It tells the buyer who the target audience of the product is and many aspects of the brand. This includes aspects like the brand ideals, the price point, where and how the product is produced, and if the product comes from a small business or a large company.
How does it do that, very specifically?
The packaging specifically does these things in many ways. The target audience is shown through the imagery, colour and language used on the packaging. The brand ideals are shown through the ecological concerns expressed through the packaging itself. The price point is expressed through the design of the packaging like simplicity vs complexity. The other aspects are expressed through language. The language could be community specific or more targeted towards the general population, and it could be more cooperate in nature or more sincere and grateful.
What differentiates each "flavour"?
Each flavour can be differentiated by a few different design aspects including colour, graphic elements/illustrations, or typography and language.
How very specifically is this done?
In this example specifically, the different flavours have different main colours on the packaging. The main logo, pattern, and certain elements are the same colour but the backgrounds are different colours. In this packaging there isn't much else that separates the two variations, but there is differences in the type on the packaging. Specifically, stating either "milk" or "dark" chocolate and also stating the cocoa percentage help the buyer to distinguish one flavour/variation from another.
After my research and some reflection, I have decided to try to create my own lip gloss brand. My ideas for this are that they will be different fruit flavored lip glosses that are targeted towards preteens and young high schoolers who are just starting to use makeup. My main goal is to create a brand that is fun, playful, and not intimating.

Project 1 - Finale

CHALLENGE
For this project, I took on the challenge of repackaging Colgate toothbrushes. The original packaging was made entirely out of plastic. The package was hard to open and harmful to the environment. My challenge was to create a new package that created less waste and was more user friendly. I personally wanted to challenge myself to create a package that made more sense with the product itself.
Challenges I discovered throughout the process were plentiful. The first issue I came across was trying to create the package from scratch. Firstly, I had a really hard time finding a material that allowed me to make the package on my own. I tried multiple kinds of paper and I wasn’t able to find a paper that was flexible enough to form the shape I wanted while also sturdy enough to stay upright with the toothbrushes in it. Once I decided that making the package wouldn’t work I started looking online to find a premade cylindrical tube that I could use for my package. After a while of looking I found a company that sold individual, ethically sourced, premade tubular packages. Even though I was very excited to find this, I came across one last challenge. I was able to purchase 3 individual tubes, but the challenge was that the tubes were bigger than I expected. I was limited as to what I could purchase and they were the only tubes that seemed like they would be tall enough to fit the toothbrushes. Because of this, I had to edit my label to be big enough to fit around the tube. I also had a small issue creating a solution that would keep the toothbrushes standing upright, but that was resolved when I switched my materials.
APPROACH
My approach to this repackage was to create packaging that was more user-friendly, made more sense for the product, and created less waste. After discussing my ideas with some people in my life, I came up with the idea to create a reusable case for the toothbrushes that could be used for travel or storage. This especially made sense since the original package came with two toothbrushes, and I was staying true to the original quantity. In order to make the case clean and desirable, I decided to find a way to display the information separately from the tube. My original idea was to create a tag that would be tied around the base of the case, but after critiques in class, I pivoted to create a label that would wrap around the entire tube. We decided this would be better because I would be able to display the information in a more legible way.
OUTCOME
After many struggles and a few changes to the idea, I was able to use a white tube with a lid. I created a label that wraps around the entire tube. If I were to actually produce this packaging, the label would be made out of paper that would be able to dissolve in water. The tube I ended up purchasing is made from recycled materials, so I would keep that aspect the same. I would’ve liked to get a tube with a smaller circumference and maybe slightly shorter as well. The circular disc inside the tube would be made out of biodegradable material.

Project 2 - Application Phase pt.3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tubes have arrived!!! They are definitely a bit bigger than I expected but I was limited by what I could purchase. Im very excited that I'll be able to have a nice portfolio piece. I haven't been able to print the label on the tube yet so more updates to come! the solution I've come up with today is how the toothbrushes are standing straight up. I have placed a circular piece of cardboard in the centre with two holes for the toothbrushes. The circular piece will be removable so the buyers will be able to use the ube for stroage and travel.
Tumblr media
This is the newest version of my label! I have edited the barcode area to make the text clearer and remove information I found unnecessary. I also added an illustration to inform the buyer that container is reusable.

Project 1 - Application Phase Pt. 2
Tumblr media
After much frustration, some searching, and eventually the generosity of my AMAZING mother I have been able to solve the problems I outlined in my previous post! I was able to find an online resource that sells individual, ethically sourced packaging! I was able to find a few different sizes, so I purchased 3 tubes that have a diameter of 3.75" and a height of 8.5". After purchasing these tubes, I was able to start on my label design (as seen above). I will need to design something that explains that the case is meant to be kept and the disposal instructions of the label. I haven't quite decided what disposal method the label will have, but I am in the process of doing research into potential ideas.

Project 1 - Application Phase pt.1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week, in class, we were given critique from our studio groups. For the most part, the critique I received was theoretical, and would be applied if this packaging was actually being produced. I also received critique on how to display the company branding and product information more effectively. One problem I have come across is the material I will make my 3D model out of. I discovered the bristol board is too stiff to be rolled into a cylindrical shape cleanly. I have two possible solutions. I could either create my 3D model out of sketchbook paper, which is more flexible than bristol board but not as sturdy, or I could create my model out corrugated cardboard. The benefits to using corrugated cardboard are that it is flexible, sturdy, and easily obtainable. The major downside to using this material is the colour. "Cardboard brown" is not exactly a visually appealing, but I could paint it or find a different workaround for this problem.

Project 1 - Creative Phase pt.2
Tumblr media
This phase of the process is about ideation. During the creative phase, I am sketching and, as previously shown, creating messy 3D models to work out potential ideas to be ironed out later in the process. My sketches show my 3 most viable ideas that I came up with during the 5Rs activity. Plan A and Plan B are both inspired by REUSE. These ideas are both variations of a container that, after the purchase, can be used for storage and travel purposes. Plan C is inspired by both REDUCE and ROT. The minimal packing would create less material that could be thrown away. Plan C would also be made out of biodegradable material or plantable material. These three ideas are still in the early stages of planning, but at this point, they all seem viable.

Project 1 - Creative Phase pt.1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week in class we were tasked with ideating using the "5 R's" principle (Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot). Each photo represents 3D models made in 10 minute increments. Every 10 minutes we switched to the next "R" out of the 5. The most successful processes for me were Reduce and Reuse. I am excited to see where this project takes me!

Project 1 - Research
Tumblr media
The first step in our new project was to pick a product with packaging we would like to try to redesign. After doing some research and talking to some people in my life, I have decided to try to redesign this toothpaste packaging. This packaging is ENTIRELY plastic, which is not very environmentally conscious and very hard to open. I am excited to see what ideas I come up with to improve the packaging!

Activity Finale :(
Tumblr media
This was a very fun activity! There were definitely some challenges, but in the end I'm pretty proud of the final product. I'd say the hardest part of this activity was colour matching and the background gradient. Luckily, I picked a box that was simple in it's construction so I had more time to focus my energy on the colours and design details. This was a very helpful first step on the road to package design!

Activity Part 2
Tumblr media
The second part of this activity was to digitally recreate our initial packaging. After that we printed, scored, cut, and built our first 3D model. After printing my first digital version I noticed a few differences between my 3D model and the real packaging, so now I am focusing on fixing those. Once I feel I have recreated the packaging to the best of my abilities, I will print out my digital version and construct my final 3D prototype.

Activity Part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are Items 1, 2, and 3 for Activity part 1. This activity was very helpful in demonstrating the relationship between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. This part of the activity brought me back to learning geometry in elementary school! I remember doing a similar exercise to this when learning the difference between 2D and 3D and learning what each face of certain 3D shapes looked like. I am glad I chose the specific object I did because it help me to understand more complex shapes and packaging solutions going forward.
