January Housekeeping Thread

Hey everyone! Apologies for being silent with Godel, things have been getting crazy with life right now and it’s harder to write for the teacher since he only lives in laptop unlike my main, but I’m trying to start up Godel again now that I have the chance! I should be back and kicking with him by the 16th, though, so hang on tight!

Defense Training, Home Economics Style!

(Inspired by this post) Due to the very sudden inclusion of his required participation and being able to place two and two together, Godel is willing to offer up a temporary class to his home ec students to learn how to use defense magic in a home environment (Godel speak for close combat defense). Walk-ins are welcome but be sure to be quick on your feet!

Prompt from @fielerex:  ❝ what’s the meaning of this, professor godel ? why have you called this meeting ? ❞

The office is as clean as expected for a faculty in this school, clean and stern, but also a little welcoming to students. However, unlike Godel, who normally would be doing something during his office hours, such as typing away on his laptop or reading some sort of book, he seems to be a bit more focused on the person in question as the question enters in. “Hello, Vil,” he says with a bit of a sharp tone. No need for nicknames when the situation should be clear to tell. “I normally would offer niceties, but I think it’s best to skip the theatrics and go to the heart of the matter.”

He places a pen and a clipboard to his lap. Whatever papers that were on it was not able to be seen since it was facing backwards.

“I will not deny that our previous conversation perhaps motivated you to make the choices you made, but I also remember saying that it would be best for you to stay with Ramshackle dorm and maintain the peace there.” A pause to let the housewarden remember that circumstance. “Yet the last place I found you is on the campus and being cornered by ghosts.” His eyes grow cross, silencing any potential retort the housewarden may have. He gave the sprout a pass one time because it wasn’t explicit, but not this time around. “And if I remember correctly, when you were confronted by me after I took you out of the situation, you practically ran away in shame at the sight of someone catching you in the act.”

Now, he didn’t exactly run, but Vil was definitely not being himself. Was it because he didn’t expect a professor to come, or because he barely survived?

No other words were needed as the home economics teacher raises the clipboard. He doesn’t reveal what sort of papers they are, yet. And yet, Godel’s going to hear his student’s side of the story. It must’ve taken a lot in order for the housewarden to do something as rash as he did.

“Do you have anything to say for yourself?”

A simple knock on the doorframe of Godel’s room, a warning before Trey makes his way through the open door. He lacks a delicate hand for wrapping anything, and little in the way of gift-giving instincts outside of his wheelhouse of talents, so he’s chosen to play to his strengths: a green box rests in his hands, a white package bow stuck on top.

“Surprise, although I think I gave myself away from the jump.” Trey’s only a little bit sheepish—he hadn’t taken the surprise part too seriously from the start. Didn’t see the need, and he’d rather just focus on the parts that mattered most. The quality of the letters, for one—negligible for interest, but Godel had entertained his ramblings all the way through—and the gift.

“I agree with you about moderation (maybe not so much about the leftovers) so I hope that in mind, these cookies will last you and your daughter a few days! It’s a mix of white chocolate peppermint cookies, sugar cookies, and a few pumpkin cookies with a sugar glaze, to mix the flavor variety up a little bit. They’re not the fanciest, and it’s a little hard to corner the cafeteria kitchen when everyone’s this busy, but I did my best.

“Hope the last few days of the year don’t give you too much trouble, and thanks for entertaining the letters, Professor.”

The knock came as a slight stirring for the bundled-up professor as he looks up from his book, which seems to be centered on something concerning health. There's also a small box by the window, which has the faint aroma of potatoes. Placing down the book, he gives a smile to the incoming student and stood up. "You have me surprised for a second, I'll owe you that much," he says humorously. He takes a peek at the present, mostly examining the handiwork and giving a small, good-natured sigh. It's clumsy, but it's certainly fitting for the student.

With the mention of cookies, the professor's eyes lit up. "Why, you shouldn't have," he says as he accepts the present. "Rose would definitely enjoy the sugar ones." He then goes to the side and places it next to the box. "Well, I managed to finish up grading the final exams, it's now a matter of making sure the next year's plans are written up." He nods with a grin. "And thank you for the cookies. Merry Christmas to you and if you're looking to send another letter or to talk to me in person, you can always go to my office."

Godel gives a chuckle. Privacy is certainly a thing that he doesn’t mind about himself. Besides, dig deep enough in the records, and people are likely to know his experience in NRU. And honestly? He’ll take that with grace. Of course, he won’t take everything in good spirit, and there are certain things that he wouldn’t say or elaborate to a student. He’s still a professor, after all! A very lax professor by professional standards, perhaps, but he’s still a professor.

He exchanges the sarcasm with a chuckle. “Well, it was definitely a different world, I could say that much,” he says. Oh, how much dorm discourse there was behind the teacher’s prying eyes. Though since this was an era before Trein was a teacher, who’s to say, really? Maybe having everything evolve from ‘cutthroat elite university’ to ‘elite university with troublemakers’ is both an advantage and a detriment.

Crowley is also a very far cry from the past, as well.

He starts thinking about Vil’s question. “If you are asking my honest thoughts, then compared to today, I feel like you sprouts let out your antics more in the open and are more direct in responding, as well. Back then everyone would either make convoluted plans to settle feuds, agree to a proper magic duel, or in my case, use your wits and words lest you become the next target.”

Truly, the late bloomers had it rough back then.

“To this situation, however, there was also a large emphasis of respect and awareness towards the latent magic around us. Anyone could point a magic pen and wave it around, but it won’t do you well if you offended the local fae because you almost burned down its tree all because you just wanted to light a campfire with a weak fire spell.” The speed that he says it almost makes it sound like it was an inside joke or a regular occurrence.

‘  i  was  just  a  little  sprout like you when I first came to this place .  ’ He looks at the current Pomefiore housewarden with curious eyes. “Is there anything that you want to know about me in particular?”

there’s a pause in script - skimming ministrations, glimmering amethysts leaving rows and rows of printed material for precious starlet to memorize only to meet his professor’s –a man he, objectively speaking, knew little to nothing about, and not out of lack of interest ; he knew how downright ugly and frustrating to deal with it was, when people would pry within curtains of private life so arrogantly, perhaps all too well.

it was all a matter of respect, on his part –at least that’s how he liked to see it. dear vil was oh so well aware of how even best and most selfless of intentions could be easily swayed and turned into multi - eyed monstrosities if one made enough effort.

“ were things always this messy in this school even before my arrival ? ” perhaps a little sarcastic in his tone, but alas his own was a stress he couldn’t exactly hide behind hours and hours of applied makeup and rehearsed courtesies ; each day passing seemed to just love chipping at either this school’s very own existence and patience of queen of all poisons –which he knew he needed to keep forth, for his members didn’t need a guide driven by anger and spite of a thousand hurriedly filed complaints.

HEY THERE (AGAIN.)

[It’s a minor improvement, but the writer has taken a little more time with the handwriting—it’s slightly neater than the last letter.]

Thank you for the tips—honestly, they almost feel kind of obvious now that I think about it. You can tell I’m not an athlete, although I did play a little as a kid. Soccer, though, and I don’t really think that counts. When you’re a kid, you’re mostly concerned about having a good time and chasing your friends around. Winning’s kind of secondary. (This is probably why they put me in the goalie box. I didn’t mind, although I’d say I let more goals pass than I did save our team from ‘em.)

I just do my best for my dorm, because we don’t really have a lot of sporty types to spare for Spelldrive. I’m not very competitive, so I’m not sure how much help I am, but it’s kind of fun. I didn’t really touch a broom before I came here, so I’m still playing catch up sometimes. I’ll put your words to use and let you know how it goes!

I wish I had a better answer for holiday traditions, but in truth, I’m usually working. It’s not that I don’t slow down to enjoy it, but it’s a busy time of year for my folks and I do my best to pitch in. I get my kicks in where I can: my dad’s usually leading the charge for decorating the shop, and I don’t really have an eye for it, but I get to set the holiday playlist up. I go out of my way to find the most obscure things I can. Shakes things up in between the classics, and I like watching customers pause for just a second to actually pay attention to a little background noise. It makes for a good conversation starter if they’re waiting, and mitigates a bunch of grumpy people hearing the same song over and over wherever they go.

Ah, that’s probably not the answer you had in mind. We do slow down a bit, closer to the new year. My folks’ anniversary is at the beginning of spring, so a lot of times they tend to defer bigger celebrations until then. Having to run a business does mean that we don’t really see a lot of relatives or have many underfoot during this time, so it’s kinda nice that our house is quieter than most. They never mind when me or my siblings have a friend or two over for dinner who wants to escape their families for a little bit.

Ha, how’s that for rambling? I can punt the question back to you, but I’ll add one to it: how do you feel about holiday food? Do you get sick of it immediately or look forward to it all year?

(I think I fall on the latter. I get sick of the flavors, let’s say, but I’ll always eat stuffing.)

Hello again, little sprout! Haha, if you wanted to make this a rambling contest, you could've just asked. I would've entertained you with all the words and conversation topics for days. I've seen your handwriting and yes, I can see the effort you've placed with the letter! A bit of thoughtfulness certainly brings more of your character in the letter.

As for the tips, it’s no problem at all. A teacher's duty to help their students see things that they may sometimes overlook, after all. Soccer has been popular during my boyhood as well, but we called it by football since it was mostly about kicking a ball with our feet. Hopefully my tips can be of good use to you for your future spelldrive endeavors!

Your business sounds like a bakery or a crafts store, especially if the holiday season is your busiest time of year. A very wonderful idea on mixing some of the classic Christmas and holiday songs with more modern songs as well. Once you hear a Christmas song enough times, there is bound to be a lot of discomfort. My little Rose is slowly making me turnaround from that opinion due to her school concerts, but the original fact does stand.

That said, having a business certainly sounds like a relaxing profession. As for inviting your friends over, it certainly sounds like an exciting moment. Hopefully those times were joyous and that your friends were able to get that brief respite! :)

Holiday food is certainly an entertaining experience, especially when it comes to different cultures! When people celebrate Christmas differently and you have the ability to travel more, there are many interpretations of the holiday. For some, there is no snow on Christmas, and Christmas is in the middle of summer. And then there are others who celebrate different holidays outside of Christmas altogether. Though I usually partake in the classics like chicken and cake, my little Rose and her guardian always send over latkes around this time, as well. I always wondered how the ghosts are always able to send it without spoiling...

Aside from that, I feel like holiday food is like every other food in moderation: too much of a good thing and it goes bad, so I usually don't eat much holiday food once the leftovers are finished.

Be sure you're keeping yourself warm in this weather, little sprout. The last thing is for you to get shriveled by the frost! And I look forward to meeting you in person, soon.

HEY THERE.

Ha, I’m really not good with these type of things—that’s no slight to you, but I’m a bit out of my element when it comes to surprises. I guess it helps keep our minds off the cold and keeps most of the student body from complaining too much about crowding into Ramshackle.

This is a nice assignment, though. I’m not one of your students, so we’ve only really spoken in passing. You do pretty necessary work, considering some of the student body. I don’t want to speak ill of my peers, especially not to a teacher, but I sometimes start questioning how people will survive once they’re no longer enrolled. It’s a shame the life skills courses tend to be neglected… although I guess I’m not any better, since I haven’t had the need to take any.

I am curious about something, though. I have relatives who are very big into Spelldrive, and I think I’ve heard through the grapevine you used to play? I help out when the inter-dorm tournament comes around, although I can’t say I’m really suited for it. I have fun when we’re trying to do pick-up games in my dorm, though, but I’m not a competitive person so I tend to get left behind. Any tips for this year’s, haha?

Sorry for rambling. I haven’t written a letter in a long time, actually. People do like the handwritten effort, though I’m sorry in advance for making you read my chicken scratch. It’s not pretty, but at least I’ve gotten pretty fast at taking notes.

Why, hello there, little sprout :)

I surely hope you are faring well; it'd be a bit concerning if you were not. I understand your sentiment with this event, however. I was rather surprised when Crowley told some of us faculty to join in. I decided to join in this exchange in earnest because it is a nice opportunity to meet some new sproutlings like you, pen pal! The day has been faring well, for the conditions it is.

It seems you understand my sentiments, my dear. The first year I've been here, I almost had to do a double take on why a person would not clean off their dishes, only to realize that someone else has been gathering way too much blot for what should be considered a parlor trick in glamour magic. My little class may not be the most exciting for everyone, but there is much to be learned, whether one thinks that they may or may not need it. Your penmanship, for example, leaves a lot of to be desired, yes, but I see potential in you yet. For one, it is legible. And for taking notes, it's very effective as is. Calligraphy talents would come soon enough.

Also, yes! I have used to be in Spelldrive as a striker for NRU, those were the glory days. Back then, I went by the title "Spellthorn" as I had a youthful appearance in my youth, but my striking abilities were exemplary. However, things happened and now I don't really participate in Spelldrive tournaments, though I make it a habit to always watch the games live or on TV, whichever is easier. I can't exactly say what this year will hold, but a universal tip that always seemed to be overlooked is to always stretch your legs before flying and to develop your core muscles if you work out outside of flight class. This will make sure you can stay on the broom for longer, especially when you do those hard corkscrews. If you're not as athletic, then stretching and minding your posture will help wonders for flying in general. After all, the person needs as much maintenance as the broom does. I would ask which dorm you are from to see your Spelldrive practices, but that would be revealing the surprise too early, and surprise letters like this should be cherished.

Ah, it seems I have also rambled quite a bit and in my teacher voice nonetheless, do forgive me. Hopefully I didn't bore you with this letter. I look forward to writing more letters with you, and if you have any more questions or wish to confide in something, don't hesitate to ask!

Magical Home Economics “Finals” (Replaces December Class Call) If it were up for Godel, he wouldn’t place his beloved sprouts to do a final when they are already in less-than-ideal conditions and there seems to be no sight to finding the solution to this problem, but Headmaster Crowley in all his generosity did not want the students to fall behind in classes, so finals are still on their way. It’s a way to establish normalcy in trying times, he says.

They are affectionate, but it's conditional. If the person makes them look good or he generally has a good time with them, then yeah, he's affectionate. If they just don't rub him right, he'll give them plenty of mixed messages. If it's in the middle, then he's affectionate in terms of roastings.

Very PDA, especially when there's people around. He doesn't do it as much with students out of personal respect, but stroke his ego enough or if there's paparazzi, there's a chance there could be some shoulder touching. Otherwise, hugs are reserved for friends and kisses are exclusive to Rose. His daughter is probably the only other person in this world who he has true affection and love for.

As a mentor, yes!

He's a professor and a father, so he has developed an effective way to teach students effectively, child or adult. That said, will he give the answer directly or hold their hand? Unless they're about to kill someone over it, no. He also wouldn't tell it straight in lessons, because home economics is supposed to be a growing experience for the person, too!

That said, (in theory) he knows exactly what advice to give at the right time.

from the real important character development questions: what they wanted to be when they grew up vs what they do now.

From as early as Godel could remember, he wanted to be a spelldrive player. The feeling of flying and running has always been a favorite, and the fact that all of the magic used were very quick and powerful was something he loved as a kid. In fact, the whole reason why he learned of his magical aptitude was because he tried really hard to float on every broom in attempts to fly. And fly he eventually did.

That wasn't meant to last, because right at the champion's cup, one of his opponents shot him from the sky and caused his leg to fracture, essentially making him forever crippled from spelldrive and similar aspects such as sprinting or high-speed flying.

Now, he is a professor for the same place that he was in the spelldrive team for :D

He doesn't mention it a lot, but he always go to the spelldrive games to cheer for his favorite team, NRU. If one were to ask if he knows spelldrive, be prepared to have a two-hour lecture with him, included with personal stories when he used to be called The Thorn of Spelldrive within the Queendom.

Though he's content enough with his life as a professor, there may still be times where he would go onto his broom or start jogging on the side, still too prideful to let his title go to waste.

Godel chuckles at the youth. He reminds him of the jocks he used to hang out with when he was in the campus, good times. He nods at the confirmation. Time for this little sprout to place his roots in his home for the next four years. And for the sake of the newcomer’s hesitancy, he won’t berate his pride too much. That said, it would be a little sad if he didn’t recommend his class. It’s not like it hasn’t been doing well, but it can be a little tricky to find in the catalogue.

“Very well!” he says. “If you were to go through the hallway outside of these walls...” He provides the directions to the mirror chamber, telling to take care to not go through the wrong mirror and to keep the ceremonial robes as pristine as possible.

“Ah, one more thing,” he says with the same easy smile. “Before you enter the dorm, you must declare your name, your homeland, and your intention before you ask the mirror to go into the dorm you want. You only have to do it the first time, but I suppose you can attempt to do it multiple times.”

He gives a wave to the student. “I must be off to attend other affairs, but if you are considering on joining magical home economics, I’d be honored to have you,” he says. “Don’t get lost again, little sprout!”

IF CEREMONIES WERE ALWAYS OF SUCH HIGH INTEREST,  he was not sure how many that he could withstand.  the quick switches of emotions were a lot to handle,  witnesses everyone fall into a panic over a fire - spewing creature going loose.  on top of that,  there was a strange figure who had come out of the coffin,  one definitely not  invited  to the ceremony.   chaos  from start to finish;  not the ideal image of the university that he embedded into his mind over all those years.  knowing that this was the school his young master attended,  sebek held an expectancy that was  far  above what he received.   the headmage himself seemed to be flakey,  unable to answer any questions with certainty,  forcing them to separate to their own dorms to avoid the spectacle.  any clear indication of what was going on,  tossed out the window;   some students were able to look along the grande halls of the college  &  forget it had happened.  his own mind was not so quick to  move on.  

post - diasomnia placement,   he felt a weight taken off his chest.  upon knowing that he would be alongside of his family.  that relief did not last  long,  seeing as all of the other mishaps during the ceremony.   in the mess,   he ends up following an entirely different group of students  —  only noticing when they are  addressed  as the wrong dorm by their guide.  breaking off,  that was when sebek located he who  looked  like a professor.  

to the  dorms?  that sounded like the proper place.  at the very least,  it would be where lilia  &  malleus were residing;  familiar faces that would bring him great relief.   where the tour had left off for diasomnia students was at this point,  he’d lost them long ago  —  feigning confidence in front of his senior,  he was immediate to cut the  lost  look.  “  precisely.  this mirror hall.  that would be my destination,  if you are aware of how to get there. ”  if only he could pretend none of it was on fault of his own.  showing incompetence was not his favorite,  hiding whatever he could.  “ only once will do.  i will be sure to memorize.  ”  a promise,  knowing that his memory has few flaws.
