When edger degas reached 36 years old, he began to have problems with his sight that continued to deteriorate gradually throughout his life.
Shortly after enlisting in the National Guard at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war, Degas developed a form of retinal disease that would result in color confusion, photophobia, and scotoma. Due to the fact that his retinopathy prohibited him from working in bright light, Degas preferred to work indoors, finding himself especially adept at the low light of the ballet and opera. By his forties, Degas had lost his central vision, and at age 57, he could no longer read. His failing eyesight surely affected his work-the broader strokes, bolder colors, and experimentation in an array of mediums including pastels, photography, printmaking, and sculpture.
