HELP GET RIGOBERTO GONZALEZ'S PAINTINGS TO HOUSTON, TEXAS
Help Make Art - A Voice for the Border
At the Art League Houston we are very excited to offer Mexican-American artist Rigoberto Gonzalez an exhibition opportunity for March 2012 to present his Baroque-inspired painting series called Baroque on the Border, which explore contemporary issues affecting the Texas-Mexico border region.
Tumblr media
In order to make this powerful exhibition happen, his paintings need to be trucked approximately 792 miles from Las Cruces, New Mexico. It will take $2,000 in gas, drivers and insurance to move the work for an exhibition at the Art League Houston opening on March 9.  If you can help get the work here, the space is available and the media is interested! Let the people of Houston see this work for the first time, hear the story it tells and reconsider the power of art to address the most difficult of issues.
We have created an INDIEGOGO campaign site to connect with the community and raise the $2000. Please help us spread the word about this exciting campaign!

In the galleries at Art League Houston and Texas Art Supply on Montrose Blvd, the public is invited to see the tremendous artistic talent of 345 teen artists living in Harris County.  Only once a year for the Scholastic Art Awards of Harris County does the community have the opportunity to see the student artwork produced in the Houston metro-area and celebrate the young artists.  These exhibitions are free and open to the public.
Between January 13 and 29, the Gold Key and Silver Key work can be seen in both galleries during regular business hours and during the special events for the winners, their families and the public.  The official award ceremonies for the Silver Key winners will take place at Texas Art Supply, 2:30 p.m. on consecutive Sundays, January 22 and 29, 2012.  A reception for Gold Key winners will be held at Art League Houston on Saturday, January 21, 2012, between 2:30 - 4:00 p.m.  The official award ceremony for the Gold Key winners will be held on Monday, February 13, 2012, 7:00-8:30 p.m. at the Harris County Department of Education.
Each year over 2,500 students from public, private and home schools in Harris County participate in the competition.  Gold Key artworks from Harris County will be forwarded to compete at the national level of The Scholastic Art Awards.  National winners are announced March 15, 2012.  Last year, 42 Harris County artists received national recognition.
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards celebrates 86 years of presence in classrooms across the nation as it identifies and documents outstanding achievements of young artists and writers. Yearly, 75,000 students in grades 7-12 participate through regional programs.  Some of nation's most celebrated writers and artists have been recognized in this competition such as Richard Avedon, Truman Capote, Robert Indiana, Bernard Malamud, Joyce Maynard, Joyce Carol Oates, Phillip Pearlstein, Sylvia Plath, Robert Redford and Andy Warhol. About 25,000 students advance to national competition in New York City. At the national level, Gold Portfolio Award recipients take home $10,000 in scholarships.
