Bitter Cane from Crowing Rooster Arts, Inc. on Vimeo.
Produced by a team of North Americans and Haitians working with Haiti Films. Haiti, 1983 75 minutes NTSC Languages: English or Kreyol
“Excellent and provocative…exceptionally well-crafted.” - L.A. Times “An outstanding analytical documentary…laid out with impressive clarity… organized with the utmost intelligence…fascinating newsreel footage…convincing.” - Variety “Thoughtful” - The Village Voice “Cogently argued…The complex human exploitation involved is made so vivid that the film becomes an especially instructive case history of U.S. – Third World relations.” - Library Journal “Powerful” British Film Institute Six years in the making and filmed clandestinely under the Duvalier dictatorship, Bitter Cane is a timeless documentary classic about the exploitation and foreign domination of the Haitian people. From peasant coffee farms in the rugged tropical mountains to steamy U.S. – owned sweatshops in the teeming capital, the film takes the viewer on a journey through Haitian history to a deeper understanding of that country’s political economy. We see emerging paths of flight – industries from the U.S., refugees from Haiti – which are having profound effects on both societies.

The Clog Maker's Apprentice | Tales of Forgotten Crafts from Falcon Productions on Vimeo.
This is the story of JoJo Wood, a young apprentice, learning the craft of Clog making. Often this type of trade is forgotten in our modern way of life, but "these crafts are a living connection with our past".
Jeremy Atkinson is the last traditional Clog Maker in England, he is running out of time and needs to pass his skills on. "There are seed banks all over the world to keep different things alive because maybe they will need to be used in the future, you could say the same thing about crafts because you don't know what's coming up".

"Boy" from "Shawnee, Ohio" Live at the Tecumseh Theater from Brian Harnetty on Vimeo.
This live performance of “Boy” is from the album "Shawnee, Ohio" (released on Karlrecords). It features an archival recording of a boy asking his grandmother about the “olden days” for a class assignment. We hear the questions, but not the answers. The recorder must have been placed too far away. The boy asks of everyday life, and harder questions about deaths that took place in the mines. The result is both humorous and haunting, a reminder of the difficulties of living in a mining town. The performance took place in the Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee, where Harnetty's grandfather performed nearly a century ago.
Performers: Jeremy Woodruff, Flute and Tenor Saxophone Katie Porter, Bass Clarinet Anna Roberts-Gevalt, Banjo and Violin Liz Fisher, Violin Jocelyn Hach, Viola Jane Van Voorhis, Cello Aaron Michael Butler, Vibraphone Brian Harnetty, Piano and Electronics
Sound/Video Production: Kevin Davison: Videography and video editing Keith Hanlon: Sound recording and mixing

Shahram Khosravi, On Pandemic and Borders, Four Rooms from Det humanistiske fakultet, UiB on Vimeo.
This conversation between Shahram Khosravi and Daniel Blanga Gubbay is part of Four Rooms: Three conversations and a reading session for unconfined thinking, an online independent program organised at the beginning of April 2020, starting from distinct aspects in the current global situation. The full program invited Elisabeth A. Povinelli (on Virus and Interdependence of Lives); Shahram Khosravi (on Pandemic and Politics of Borders); a reading session based on Astrida Neimani's Hydrofeminism; or On Becoming a Body of Water, guided by Paul Maheke; and a conversation with Denise Ferreira Da Silva (on The Logistics of Exclusion and Obliteration in Self-Isolation). In time of self-confinement, the four video conversations connected rooms in different locations in the world, and live-streamed to collectively - and unconfinedly - think the present. Four Roms is a program conceived and moderated by Daniel Blanga Gubby, and fictionally hosted as an online fictional hotel by the narrative of خان - The Khan.
