This moment. That's when I realized I was totally fond of these two. I should've known, only by reading this, that their story was going to be so beautiful yet so tragic. The "if only..." kind of story.

The way Emma does desperate things to get his attention and she bitterly admits that. The way Draken's chatting and laughing with Mikey in these panels, pretending indifference, but he's actually looking at her and paying attention to what she does, while internally writhing in jealousy due to what he's just heard about her and Takemichi.

These two break me, I swear.

CHAPTER 217 - my comment and analysis (focus on drakemma and mikey)

Please, beware of spoilers if you haven't already read it!

After reading the chapter over and over again, I can finally organize and write down my thoughts. These are just my personal observations so, as always, take everything with a grain of salt.

Firstly, let's focus on the most painful, yet soft details:

It's been two years since Emma's death, yet Draken still keeps in his room this wonderful picture of her and the teddy bear he gave her as a birthday present. And what does this tell us?

It confirms again that Draken has always loved Emma.

It confirms again that Draken still loves Emma.

It goes without saying that Draken's still suffering. And the fact that he keeps tender and beautiful memories of her, such as the teddy bear and the picture where she smiles so beautifully, means that Emma's still his gem and his light, in my opinion, someone he associates with love and innocence.

The fact that now he has the teddy bear probably means that, after Emma's death, Mikey gave it to him, or Draken visited Emma's room and asked Mikey if he could keep it, or maybe it's a matching teddy bear.

Now, let's move on to the very moment my eyes filled with tears: Draken saying he still dreams about Emma, specifically Emma telling him to help Mikey.

What does this tell us? This truly says a lot, if you ask me.

Emma appearing in Draken's dreams means, of course, that she's important to him and he loves her.

But it also means, somehow, that he's still grieving and Emma is still very much present in Draken's heart (she will be in the future, too, in canon).

And last but not least, Emma's always wanted to save Mikey, she stated that herself shortly before her death, and having her say (though in a dream this time around) similar words once again is very touching in my opinion, because with this expedient Wakui reminds us one more time that Emma loved Mikey more than anyone else and he still assigns to her that great power of love which can lead to good resolutions, even though she's not physically there anymore.

Why is Emma the one appearing in Draken's dreams telling him to help Mikey? Does Draken decide to help Mikey only because it's Emma the one "asking"? I'm going to answer these two questions in one shot because in my opinion they're strictly connected.

First off, let's not forget that a dream is just a dream. It's not like the "actual" Emma magically appears in front of Draken as a ghost and manipulates his mind into making him complete tasks. No, just no. A dream is connected to the person's "psychic activity", so it's actually Draken's mind, not Emma per se, who actively suggests him to do something for Mikey through those dreams. Why am I saying this? Because, in my opinion, the dreams Draken talks about in this chapter are very much rooted in the way he himself sees Emma and Mikey. Let me explain: Draken knows that Mikey needs his help and he simultaneously knows that Emma loved his brother dearly, and the result is that his mind processes and puts these two awarenesses together so that at night he ends up dreaming about Emma (the person he associates with love) telling him to help Mikey (something he already wants to do). In my opinion, this is the deeper meaning of those dreams. Draken saying that he can't abandon Mikey is not just him taking action to please Emma. Emma's words in Draken's dreams are actually Draken's mind speaking. He loves his friend, he'd never turn his back on Mikey with such a light heart and without even trying (in the future Draken is disillusioned and gives up on Mikey, but in this timeline it's time to try everything). Even though Mikey makes his friends despise him, Draken still feels the pain of losing him. All of these, not only Emma's words in his dreams, are the reasons why Draken wants to get Mikey back.

I've noticed a general discontent, which I don't understand to be honest. Some people are disappointed because they interpreted Draken's words as him wanting to help Mikey just because of Emma's influence. But I think it's not like that at all. I'd rather say that Emma, in this case, acts as a sort of glueing force. Her romantic love for Draken and her sibling love for Mikey are very much alive in Draken's heart and they serve as a unifying force in a circumstance where Draken is in pain yet still willing to do something for his friend. This dreams (please, don't forget they are just dreams after all) about Emma asking him to help Mikey just give Draken the right push. And don't forget that up until this moment, Draken was still convinced that Mikey hated them all, yet he meant to get him back! Why would he decide to help such a person and to join another gang in order to get said person back if he didn't heartily feel like that? Emma's words in Draken's dreams must not be read alone, they must be read along with Draken's pre-existing respect and love for Mikey. It's only at the end of this chapter, after talking with Takemichi about future Mikey, that Draken actually understands his friend has only been sacrificing himself and this new awareness is just a side benefit and not the real drive, because Draken had already decided to get him back even before figuring out Mikey's actual intentions. So, in conclusion, did Draken decided to help Mikey because Emma is the one asking? My take is that no, that's not the only reason, that's the "push", what drove Draken to shed some light on his own conscience, what Draken needs to finally take action. He wants to save his friend, but before talking with Takemichi and before figuring out Mikey's intention, Draken's conflicted because he thinks Mikey turned his back on them, but he joins Brahman anyway, with the goal of saving Mikey. Deep inside of him, he knows what he has to do and he keeps wondering how and why things turned like that, he's probably obsessing over the whole situation. Here's where the dreams about Emma take over. It's Draken's mind producing those dreams, it's Draken's mind putting those words in Emma's mouth because he knows, he knows helping Mikey is what he himself wants and what Emma would want. That's the reason why he joins Brahman even before realizing that Mikey did everything to protect them all and not just out of resentment. Draken has always wanted to save Mikey, unconditionally.

Look at his bitter smile here. It's heartbreaking. This boy is fed up with all the suffering, he's broken. He lost Emma, he lost Mikey, he lost Toman, he just wants his friends to be safe and happy.
