Previews: KATSU – “Drone” @ Diane Rosenstein Gallery
Tumblr media
Tonight at Diane Rosenstein Gallery in Los Angeles, the evolution of graffiti will be on view with a new solo show from one of the most subversive and confrontational artists out there - KATSU. Entitled Drone, the exhibition continues the New York-based writer's experimentation with incorporating technology into his work with paintings created by using a mountable remote sprayer on a quadcopter drone. The proof of technique of which was most famously seen in a video that went viral where he vandalized Kendall Jenner's face on a Calvin Klein Jeans billboard in NYC with a drone he has open sourced to others of the same mind out there. The gallery environment may seem restrictive to the notorious artist, who often works in large scale, but there is a certain beauty to seeing the ingenuity of KATSU on display in a muted setting. Discuss KATSU here.

Incredible Bodypainting Disguises Woman as a Swimming Sea Turtle
Tumblr media
We've seen many cutting edge body painting artists who use the human body as a canvas, and one who continuously astounds us with his nature-inspired works is Johannes Stötter. From a tropical frog to a majestic lone wolf, Stötter uses his painting skills to disguise human bodies as incredibly realistic animals. For his latest trick-of-the-eye illusion, the clever artist transforms the body of female model Sara Costabiei into a lifelike sea turtle.
Stötter captured the scene on video, which at first glance looks like a clip from a marine life documentary. The “turtle” is seen swimming gracefully through a blue ocean until it suddenly begins to change shape, revealing the illusion. Costabiei slowly moves from her contorted position, showing her human form and how it has been painted. While one half of her head and body are adorned in the patterns of a turtle's leathery skin, her other half is painted to resemble its rounded shell.
Stötter's creations are a stunning visual reminder of our connection with the natural world. You can find more of his incredible body art on his website.

Italy's first Starbucks opens today in Milan

Italy's first Starbucks opens today in Milan, a city where bars are many and coffee is difficult to top.
Since its introduction in the 1500s, coffee has developed its own culture in Italy where days are defined by rituals conducted by devotees, who believe a real espresso or cappuccino tastes very different to the chain's offerings.
How then, does an American giant like Starbucks make it's foray into the motherland of coffee? It goes for the cover-all-bases approach so instead of trying to prove it can do coffee well, it tries to do coffee, pastries, ice cream and the classic Italian aperitivo well too, all whilst cleverly tapping into the country's love of design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The “clacker board” is shown at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan, Italy on Sunday, August 02, 2018. (Joshua Trujillo, Starbucks)
It starts with a location – a historic building on Milan's grandiose Piazza Cordusio that has according to Starbucks CEO, Howard Shultz, been designed with “painstaking detail and great respect for the Italian people and coffee culture”. This Starbucks will be distinctly different in its offering as the milanese branch will be the brand's third reserve roastery and, like its last which opened in Shanghai, will comprise a space dedicated to the experience of coffee.
On the floor a mosaic technique, handcrafted in the Palladian style, a historic technique particular to northern Italy and hand-laid by local artisans. one of the marbles used in the flooring is called Candoglia, which comes from a quarry owned by the citizens of Milan and, until very recently, used exclusively for the duomo of Milan and buildings in the surrounding piazza. for the first time Starbucks has also used marble in its bar tops (sourced from Tuscany), in an effort to echo the espresso bars that feature it across Milan.

Starbucks barista Cecilia Cacciatore operates a nitro ice cram maker at the Affogato Station at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Milan, Italy on Monday, August 03, 2018. (Joshua Trujillo, Starbucks)
Inside it offers a 360-degree look at the craft and science of coffee roasting, letting customers walk around the equipment used throughout every stop of the process. From the roaster, to the cooling tray, to the de-gassing chamber and the packing line, the space is filled with theatricals that could be lost on the Italian who is used to walking into a standup coffee bar, drinking their shot of coffee and leaving. On the other hand (and this is clever of Starbucks), this insight into production could do well in winning them over. Half the game in getting an Italian on side is to certify a premium level of care and attention has been taken when it comes to the quality of a product, justifying Starbucks' decision to offer something more than counter service.
What is most clever about Starbucks' approach to breaking the Italian market is its attempts to demonstrate a rounded understanding of the country's culture. Beyond coffee and design, the Milan roastery's “Arriviamo Bar” offers cocktails and delicacies inspired by the Italian apertivo (that's enjoying a drink in the early evening with nibbles). Elsewhere it hosts a Princi bakery (a Milan-born bakery dedicated to tradition and ancient techniques) and an affogato station where ice cream is made to order in single batches, which partners create by combining the cream base with liquid nitrogen.
Paolo Gadalet, the president of the Italian Espresso National Institute, said: “We are really happy that a large company like Starbucks is coming to Italy, because we think that the coffee it serves is not like an Italian espresso but is still coffee that tastes good”.

An Artist Threw a Dinner Party Inspired by Her Paintings
Tumblr media
For notable New Orleans-based painter Mallory Page, art is most certainly a calling. In 2018 alone, her work has featured prominently in the homes and projects of interior designers across the country and lined the walls of Bunny Williams' showroom in New York-as well as take over the Martine Chaisson Gallery in a powerful solo show, A Ponderous Weight (I don't remember if I was frightened or pleased). Named after a line from Kate Chopin's novel The Awakening, the exhibition of large-scale, color-washed paintings ultimately became the starting point for a dinner party Page hosted on a balmy summer night at her home.
Tumblr media
PAGE'S SPRING SHOW, A PONDEROUS WEIGHT (I DON'T REMEMBER IF I WAS FRIGHTENED OR PLEASED.), AT MARTINE CHAISSON GALLERY.
“As an artist, when you're working so intimately on a project, it's difficult to make that jump from your isolated studio to a super social gallery opening,” explains Page. “Besides being an extension of the the art itself, the dinner party allowed me to celebrate a body of work intimately with other artists, mentors and close friends.”
No stranger to food, Page-along with her husband Jacques Rodrigue-owns the Lafayette-based Blue Dog Café, a restaurant founded by her husband's late father and famed Louisiana artist George Rodrigue. Riffing on ideas with head chef Ryan Trahan, Page crafted an eight-course menu steeped in art, place, and literature. “Together, we created and paired each plate to tell a story-I wanted the food to trigger an emotional response,” she says.
Tumblr media
Inspired by the themes in Chopin's writing-a fellow New Orleanian and early feminist writer who explores “that existential struggle for identity as a Southern woman and, more specifically, the performance of femininity in the South”-Page also drew from her own work to transform the tablescape into a rich tableau, essentially bringing her canvases alive for all the senses.
Tumblr media
The moody blue-grey color scheme in everything from the delicate taper candles lining the table to the evening's signature Aviation Cocktail created a calm and warm atmosphere. And the plates stamped with Venus statues are a wink to the lifesize versions that took center stage at Page's show, while also evoking her work as a whole; the artist dubbed her studio, located just outside of the city, as Villa Venus.
“When I started thinking about extending the art project to a dinner party, the power of this Venus monogram took on a new form,” explains Page. “I began to see them as design objects and tableware. I think they turned out beautifully, and I can't wait to do more with it.”
Tumblr media
“Like an art project, a memorable dinner lies in the details,” explains Page of her approach to entertaining.
Here, she shares a few more ideas on creating a magical, art-inspired evening.
Find your palette
“I translated the canvas directly to the table. The artworks were for the most part variations of blue, and so the tablescape evolved naturally from there.” Unexpected touches, such as the candles and cocktail also being awash in the distinctive blue-grey, fully immersed guests in the experience.
Be unique
“Give your guests something to speak about the next day, something that they've never experienced before,” suggests Page, “Never use the same party trick twice.”
Tumblr media
Keep calm
“Know when to be a planner and when to be a host. In other words, know when to stress and when not to stress. Once the party is underway, Page recommends putting the attention on the guests. “They are the most important. Give them the attention they need.”
Stay Humble
“Remember that your guests have come because they love you. Don't be afraid to ask them for a quick hand if you need.”

Adults Are Finding a Nostalgic Way to Creatively Relax With 'Paint by Number' Kits
Photo: Paint by number set from Galina Tiun / Shutterstock.com This post may contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase, My Modern Met may earn an affiliate commission. Please read our disclosure for more info.
When you hear the phrase “paint by number,” you're most likely picturing the crafty activity you did as a kid. You're imagining the canvases with detailed outlined drawings that are just waiting to be filled in with the small set of paints. It was a satisfying activity; by simply matching the numbers in the drawing with the numbered pigments, you created a fully realized picture. No matter your skill level, you felt like a pro when you were done.
While paint by number kits might still seem like an act of your youth, they've recently become a fun activity for grown-ups. Going the way of the coloring book, paint by numbers for adults have the same supplies as their kid-centric counterparts, but the artwork features subject matter that grown-ups would want to display in their homes. Blooming succulents, a portrait of Frida Kahlo, and the fashionable fiddle leaf fig plant are just some of the things you can paint. This relaxing analog activity, coupled with nostalgia, makes this a great past time-especially if you are trying to decrease the amount you spend staring at a screen.
Paint by number kits are a popular choice when pursuing this hobby, but it's possible to DIY it as well. The website PBNify makes it easy by allowing you to upload an image and select your color palette. It will then convert your picture into a paint by number template that you can print out and transfer onto canvas. Use your favorite acrylics and this special paint saver palette to turn your picture into a full-blown kit.
Here are some of our favorite contemporary paint by number kits that will inspire you to try one.
Looking for an analog activity that's both fun and nostalgic? Try paint by numbers for adults!

Synesthetic Artist Melissa McCracken Paints Abstracted Depictions of Jazz, Funk and Pop Songs
Tumblr media
“A Sunday Night”(2017), oil on canvas, 48” x 48”
“Wasn't It Kind of Wonderful” (2017), oil on canvas, 48” x 48”Melissa McCracken paints what she hears, titling each of her abstract oil paintings after the songs that inspired the work's expressive gestures and bright punches of color. The Kansas City-based artist has a neurological condition called Synesthesia, which causes her sense of hearing to trigger colorful depictions of songs and genres. For McCracken, jazz music appears as iridescent blues, whites, and golds, while an upbeat pop song is bright pink and purple. You can see more of the artist's musical interpretations on her website and Instagram. (via Kottke)

Status: XX
The second film in Andre Bato and Kristian Kirk's new series, which premieres in its entirety today on NOWNESS, continues the American artist duo's examination of the relationship between the camera and its subjects. This time, the creative duo take a close and clinical look at feminine expression through dance.
Speaking about the project's mix of science and sensation Kirk explains: “Rather than styling models in cultural uniforms, we used real members of subcultures and specific communities and placed them in scenarios within our studio. The film's white universe-boundless and starkly clean, like an advertisement-sets up a surreal juxtaposition between the space and the stimulating activities taking place inside of them.”
The artist's project is to be exhibited alongside a set of wide-screen projections and 'body sculptures,' designed by Kirk, at GAZE in New York.

Die for Love

Die for Love
Filmmaker and NOWNESS's creative director Bunny Kinney steps behind the camera in this candid portrait of queer love and radical couture, joining forces with Turkish-born, London-based designer Dilara Findikoglu who styles a bridal ceremony rife with gothic romance that rethinks the limitations of traditional love.
Kinney, talking about filming the designer's new clothing, explains: "Dilara's collection is a subversive, inclusive take on bridalwear, inspired by both historical and mythological figures from stories of forbidden, often tragic romance. We cast the film with real couples and interviewed them about each other-to create a portrait of modern love that no longer hides but shows itself off proudly for all the world to see."

'Cursive Structure' Is A Chair Inspired By Dragon Movement

Artist Chulan Kwak presented his new project called Cursive structure.
The inspiration comes from Caoshu – known as Chinese cursive brush-writing – the most abbreviated typeface in the calligraphy.
The free flow of Caoshu in the white margins resembles the appearance of a dragon that seems to fly through the sky. Chulan Kwak, inspired by this movement, restructured the 2dimensional stroke of Caoshu, which seemed to run the blank space rhythmically, into the 3dimensional structure. Through the form of free curves, he has created 'Cursive Structure' that functions as well as creating a contrast between the object and margin of space that changes according to the viewpoint.

In order to realize this free curved form, Chulan Kwak applied the technique of paper craft to woodwork. He first created the form through 3D software and then unfolded it to extract the accurate drawing. He used this method to precisely cut thin and bendable plywood with a CNC machine and to adhere the edges of each parts correctly in order.
Through the combination of the digital tool and craftsmanship, he was able to create the solid forms of free curves in the real world, such as those made in the virtual space. They were finished after dyeing with Muck (ink used for Chinese brush-writing) for the deep black color.
Chulan Kwak is a designer who has worked in designing and creating furniture after studying at Hongik Univerisity in Korea and Design Academy Eindhoven in Netherlands.
